Hi all,
I have had the name Owen in mind for a son for quite some time, both because I like it and because it has meaning within my family. Our problem has now become the fact that our surname is Ronan.... Does Owen Ronan really work?
What do you guys think?
Thanks for your help, it would be great to get some ideas on this.

I feel for you because it is not easy to let go of a name that in most ways seems to be a perfect fit...but I really wouldn't pair those names together. Say it loud a few times and see what you think.
Did you have anything else that is a close second?

I do like Owen, but the combination rhymes too much for me.

It's not perfect but I think it's OK.

It's not really terrible, but not nice sounding either. I too wouldn't pair those names together.

I really don't think it works. It sounds like a name out of a limerick. He would get people making up rhymes about his name all the time. I'm not sure why but the following came to mind:
Jake Ronan

Obviously I love the name Owen, and it's not a horrible combination but I probably wouldn't.

I wouldn't.

I feel it is too close to your surname.

Is there any other name that you like?

Not a great combo.

If you say it quite slowly is sounds fine, when said together fast it is quite a mouthful.
I would try to find another name I love.

Me to! Great name, but alas it is not ideal with your surname.
But in case it helps (since we have the same taste in names), other names we also seriously considered were...
Dominic and Alistair.

No, I wouldn't.
Maybe you could still use Owen as a middle name?

Sorry OP, but I don't think it works. I know how it feels to have a stand out favourite name that just doesn't go with your surname

No, it doesn't go together sorry.

Ditto. I had to let go of my favourite name and one that DP even agreed to because it ends in K and our last name begins with C so the double KC sound just does not work. I would use Owen as your mn so you still get to use it. There are heaps of other great names that will go with your surname. Could be worse!

Tongue twister. Try and say it three times fast.

Wow! Thanks for all of your ideas everyone!
Yes, sadly, we were thinking it is a bit of a mouthful, so your advice was sad, but kind of confirming what we already knew...
We will be using Owen as a middle name (I just can't completely let it go...)
And we are also considering Jake and Oliver, so thankyou for those suggestions, they are definately on the shortlist!
Who knows, we may even have a girl!
Thanks again for all of your help.

Hi OP:
I'm with the majority -- that combination just doesn't work.
The good news is that there are tons of awesome boys' names out there (and lots of people here who would love to make some suggestions!)

What about Euan/Ewen/Ewan?

We had to ditch a name we loved because of our last name - when you said it fast it sounded similar too loose elastic and so we let it go, which I hated because i loved that name..
