What are your first impressions of Daphne? I don't know if it would ever make the top of my list but it's something I've always liked. Is it too flowery? I don't know why it seems flowery to me. What does it remind you of? There was a character many moons ago on ACP or something called Daphne I think. Is it old lady, or old lady-trendy like the Esmes and Gretas? Also do you know any young children with this name?

Makes me think of the character on Neighbours - Des & Daphne? NMS at all, quite flowery for me.

Ah Neighbours, that's what I was thinking of! So it is a flower? I'm going to google it.

I really like it. I know it's a flower, but that doesn't immediately spring to mind for me.
Even though the only Daphne I've known was elderly (and just the most kind, beautiful woman), I don't think it has an exclusively 'old-lady' vibe.

I love it. I think it is very chic. It makes me think of Daphne Guinness.
I think Donald Duck's girlfriend was Daphne but I am not sure. There was also character on Neighbours years and years and years ago (80s). That doesn't put me off though.

Donald Duck's girlfriend was Daisy duck. Daffy duck is a boy (and a Warner Bros character).

I don't love it but it's pretty. I've know of a couple of babies being called Daphne in the last year so I think it is becoming in vogue like Esme, Esther, that kind of "old lady" name.

I think of Des and Daphne too!
I dislike the nickname Daph - which I think could morph into Daffy duck.
I don't think it's the worst name, but NMS either.

It's a lovely name that is 'fresher' than many of the other flower/nature/plant names that are currently popular (Rose, Violet, Willow, Jasmine etc)

Yes, 20 years later or something, I can still hear and see her laugh...!
(she was the one with the awful cackle right?)
I don't know why but it just doesn't do anything for me. Maybe it's because it's so rare these days though; if I met a nice Daphne I could change my mind though.

Daphne was my choice for DD1 but DP refused to allow it because of the scoody doo connection. But I really really love it!

Scooby Doo doesn't bother me in the slightest, or Neighbours. Or ducks. I wonder if it's too much Greek with Xanthe? According to one website a lot of people think it's French but it's actually Greek. Thanks for your replies, I'll put it on the list for DP to look at when he is actually interested in discussing names.

Saw this in recent topics and had to reply...
We just named our baby girl Daphne (she is nearly 4 weeks old

)
Our OB actually delivered another Daphne a week before us (they were twins - Sidney & Daphne)
We love the name (obviously

) and were going for something not so common...

My first thought of Daphne is always the exquisite perfume of the daphne shrub. If you do name your DD Daphne, OP, you must hunt down this plant for your garden. They can be tricky to grow, but the perfume is heavenly. My darling mum had a daphne growing in her garden - how I miss it.
