Filling in time waiting for this 'overdue' baby to arrive with too much internet... and although we are pretty much settled on possible names I came across Viviette and think I really like it.
DH will kill me if I start throwing in new names but might just keep this up my sleeve if its a girl.
It might be the french way I like to say it that I like - strong on the 'ette'. Whereas most may use more of a sound that rhymes with idiot which is less appealing.
Anyway anyone have an opinion on this name?

erm... not sure how to put this but here goes:
I think this name is like an eternal punishment for an innocent child. Unspeakably foul. And really really funny.
Why would a person do this? To a baby?
Perhaps this is a legitimate name with a long history. Still. It sounds like a person with a severe speech impediment trying to say "idiot".

Vinaigrette came to mind, so I'm no help. Sorry OP! I like Vivian though.
Hope you don't have to wait too much longer.

I've never heard it before but sounds like one of those names that sounds great in French (or whatever language it comes from) but not so good in English. I much prefer Vivienne but I wouldn't say it was "Unspeakably foul".
It sounds like a character in a foreign movie. Good luck with getting your baby out soon! Once it's here the extra few days waiting will be irrelevant!

There's something about it I don't like. Much prefer Vivienne.

How on earth could you get 'idiot' from Vivette? Even a 'severe speech impediment' as you put it, you couldn't get 'idiot'...unless you are pronouncing Vivette wrong?

It wasn't Vivette, it was Viviette - which almost rhymes with idiot depending on how you want to say it.
I agree, it's not flash. But I find it hard to judge people on the names they like/dislike. It is so personal really, and I don't like to criticise.
I remember when I told my mum I was naming my son Griffin, and she said "errrr yuck thats an awful name" with a terrible look on her face. He was born, and he is Griffin, and I often have thought to myself since "geez you must be really suffering mum, having to call your grandson that 'awful' name"......
Each to their own. Kids always end up suiting whatever name they are given.

It reminds me of serviette. I'd much prefer Vivienne or Viviana.

I've never come across it before. It doesn't even remotely sound like idiot...
I think there are better -ette names, but it isn't terrible by any stretch. I'm quite intrigued by it actually.

Vivienne is nice (although invariably you end up being called Viv) and there is a world of beautiful '-ette' ending names, but Viviette is not for me...
Stick with your list OP!! And good luck!

Ahh! Lol I didn't even see the second 'i', now her post makes more sense.

My apologies sara.s.
Of course name preferences are a personal thing, but if you're actually discussing them openly on a public forum, you're going hear more than your personal opinion, you'll hear others too (good and bad). More often than not people judge the name not the people themselves anyway.
Anyway back to the OP's name, I have to say between what I thought was Vivette and Viviette - I actually think the former sounds better. I really don't like how Viviette sounds, and while I probably wouldn't make the leap to idiot even still, it isn't a name I like. Between Vivette and Viviette, Vivette rolls off the tongue a little better. But Vivette really isn't a legitimate name so probably not useful suggesting that as an option (especially when Vivienne is infinitely better than both!).

Well, I thought that the name the OP posted was Viviette and not Vivette. I think Vivette is an improvement. But surely Yvette an improvement still?

No no sara you were correct, I read it wrong not you, sorry. I don't think I'd have even realised unless mumofalmostthree pointed it out to me, lol.
Yvette is a great suggestion too.

A bit too tizzy for me but I reckon you would get the emphasis on the 'ette' as it should be.
Vivi is a nickname I really like but I would still opt for full name of Vivienne, Viviana or Genevieve.
ETA I know a Venette.

I know it's such a personal thing, but if you do want my opinion - here goes:
I think it sounds like one of those names that has been made up in an attempt to be classy and tasteful - but actually has precisely the opposite effect.. Don't think you can get away with this one unless you are actually French!

I don't mind it, but much prefer Vivienne. I don't think the Australian accent would give it the correct pronounciation that it requires.

I also prefer Vivian or Vivienne, but as the PP said, Viviette is intriguing... The more I think about it, the more I actually like it.

I ADORE Vivienne, but was not brave enough to use it. I had connotations of Vyvyan from the Young Ones - my DH has red hair and I thought it was cruel to name beautiful baby - who may get that red head gene - this name... thankfully... DD has red hair, sooo glad she is not Vivienne!
BUT Viviette is NMS at all. It is a combo of Vivienne and Vienetta to me. Sorry!

I LOOOOVE Vivienne and am a big fan of "ette" and french-sounding names but this one doesn't do it for me.
I like these similar names better:
Charlotte
Harriet
Juliette
Violet

It makes me think of some kind of scientific measuring tool, like a pipette, which is weird as I don't get that with other 'ette' names.
Not my style.

But I guess if you really love it you should go with it...

I would say it as Viv-YET, which I rather like.
Unfortunately I think most Australians would pronounce it VIV-i-et, or viv-i-ETTE, both of which are awful.
It's a bit like Danielle. I like the French pronunciation of dan-YELL, but hate the Aussie pronunciation of dan-i-ELLE.
I'd skip it if I were you.

Me too - the first thing I thought of was vivisection.
I think it could be beautiful pronounced with a French accent, but a very risky choice in Australia.

Never cease to be amazed at how rude some people can be with their comments, you can get your point across without being offensive.
