A facebook friend of mine has called her child that and to date I have no idea if the child is called Emily or Emili-eh (IYKWIM) Weird spelling, confusing.

Prefer it as Emily or Amelie but not Emelie, it looks like a confused version of either or the aforementioned names.

ThisIsMeOk is Emelie a French variant of Emily? That's what I thought but all I can find is Emilie being French.

Tres Bon. I like it - it is a classic name (from the French).

Émilie, not Emelie, is the French Emily.

Isotopes: I asked the lady of the shop 9+years ago and she said hers was french.
Jazzgirl: Mine is said the same way as the Emily spelt way.

Emelie would be hardly sayable in French. You would have to pronounce both e's as e 'acutes'. (Like the e in egg.) That's why it is Amelie or Emilie so you can open your mouth properly to utter a sound.

Emily or Emilie is gorgeous but I'm not a fan of that spelling.

Such a coincidence.
I was looking at my family tree today and we have 2 Emelies. I think it's lovely but I had never seen the name before today.
ETA: The first Emilie was born in the early 19th century so maybe people aren[t familiar with it because it's gone out of fashion.

Actually, the site that thisismeok listed and the most reputable site I know (www.behindthename.com) both have Emelie as originating from Sweden.
If you want it pronounced the same as Emily - I would go with Emily. The french Emile with the appropriate accent, is very pretty but with a slightly different e sound. Unless you are quite familiar with the Swedish dialect I wouldn't go Emelie.

I love it - my great, great grandmother was an "Emelie" - so maybe that's why I have a soft spot for it.

Yeah, thanks, futureself. The Swedish Emelie would be pronounced pretty much like Emily.
