Hi there.

My little guys are 41/2 months old, and big healthy feeders.

Brodie who is the bigger of the two seems ready to try some solids. He is showing all the signs, and I have tried him on a little rice and he was more than keen.

My problem is that Oscar isn't really interested yet, and suffers from severe eczema and other allergies. So I really need to delay him from starting for as long as possible.

My question is do I let Brodie start now and not worry about Oscar yet? Do I do it secretly as Brodie tends to wake first so that Oscar isn't feeling left out???!!! Or do I just hold Brodie back until Oscar is ready?

Has anyone else started them at different times? I was really hoping to start together.

Any suggestions greatly received.

Hi Rachel,
Emma started solids around 4 weeks before Hannah. I tried them both at around 5 1/2 months, but Hannah just wasn't interested and didn't seem to know what to do with it. lol I would just give Emma a bit of rice cereal (and later pumpkin and sweet potato) in her rocker, while Hannah was occupied in the swing or play gym.

The only difficulty I found was keeping track of which baby had tried which food once they were both on solids. I just kept two separate lists on the fridge so that I wouldn't get confused.

Each to their own BUT they don't recommend solids before 6 months. So maybe if you hold off Brodie starting for a while then Oscar may catch up and be ready.

Do what ever works for you though.

All my kids were close to 7 months before I started them on solids and I found it so much easier they were well and trully ready.

Good luck

Hi Rachel-we actually started the boys at different ages BUT like Wems says I would definitely not start till at least 6months.

We started them both at nearly 4months(just under) because like yours they were both big eaters (they were already on the max of formula at that stage and still hungry).

Unfortunately early introduction of solids is linked to allergies (and you already have one with that tendency).

At 5 months Joel was covered in eczema and at 10months had an anaphylactic reaction when I introduced egg. When he was formally tested at the RCH at 18mnoths he also had a severe peanut allergy (both life threatening)......if I could change one thing it would be to have introduced solids later for them both. He has just had further testing and is now allergic to hazelnuts/seseeme seeds as well as cats/pollens and dustmites .

Hope I havent scared you to death but please take the recommendations seriously especially as you already have one that is allergy prone.

Like the other girls have said, I would wait until 6 months. Taylor was ready before Summer was but like you we have major allergy issues so decided to wait until both were ready at about 6.5 months. I was breastfeeding so thought it was better to do everything I could to keep the allergies away. And so far it is working. I am a very allegic person and have to carry adreniline injections with me. The Allergist that I take all four kids to is really impressed that my kids are reasonably allegy free.
