Was just wondering if anyone had any statistics on early arrivals for twins.

I know if you get to 36 weeks that's good but was wondering what the odds were on them arriving early.

Thanks

Linda

My singleton arrived at 33 weeks due to severe pre-eclampsia.

My fraternal girls arrived at 32.2 weeks due to pPROM & pre-eclampsia. original.gif

JenM what planet does your ob live on?? Even for singletons, getting to 24w is *hardly* a guarantee of a healthy take home baby (let alone a take home baby at all) - no matter how wonderful a NICU you have access to.

Edited to remove lots of detail, but basically according to www.birth.com.au by about 32 weeks singletons have about a 95% chance of survival but will initially require some kind of specialist care.

Your Dr is very lucky that your boys were born at 36w and are fine, otherwise he could have had a liability suit on his hands and I don't think his insurer would have been impressed!

I got to 36 weeks - they stayed in special care for almost 3 weeks (born on a Friday came home on a Wednesday - 2 days shy of 3 weeks old) - Emma was fine - just needed tube feeding for about a week - Brandon had the lot, trouble breathing, regulating his temperature, feeding issues (ended up with an iv for 3 days), and jaundice.

The midwife who conducted the "Expecting Twins" class last night at the hospital where I'm having my babies said that just over 50% (I forget the exact number, it was something like 52%) of twins are born before 37 weeks. She didn't elaborate tho on what percentage are born for example before 35 weeks.

My Ob has told me that most twins are born between 32 and 36 weeks.

Hi,

We just finished our 'Parenting Twins' classes at the hospital and they also said that 50% of twins come before 37 wks and the other 50% after.

They also said that babies born after 30 wks have a 90-95% chance of survival with no complications. I dont know if they were just saying that to relieve our anxiety (after discussing all of the negative side effects of an early birth) but I am hanging on to that magic number and praying like crazy that we reach it (4 wks to go!!).

Good luck with your pregnancy - I hope that it is long and healthy original.gif

Hi Linda

Congrats on your twin pregnancy!

I carried my little guys to 39 weeks and they were quite content to stay longer. So don't worry not all twins are born early!! i was stressed to the max that they would come early. As i am an ID twin myself and i was born at 30 weeks (26 years ago!), and i am 100% healthy!! My Ob told me that our first hurdle was 28 weeks, and then 32 weeks and then he looked at every 2 weeks as a great step, and he really wanted me to really get past 34 weeks - which to him was fantastic as they didn't have to go to the NICU and i could go to the hospital i wanted. So try to look at it in little steps like i did and it is so much easier to handle.

Good luck - and i will be reading to see how you go.

Thanks everyone. My C-section will be at around 36 weeks so I guess relaxing and keeping my legs crossed is the way to go.

Juzzi - I had slight Pre-Eclampsia in my first pregnancy as well and was told it has less chance of occurring second time. Not so in your case

Buterscotch & Pinkmilly - Which hospitals are you going to as mine has never mentioned Twin parenting classes. Would be very interested in that

My OB said almost the same as Rachie D's, get to 28, then 32, and hopefully 34.

Well we made it to 33w4d...almost but not quite into a relatively trouble free zone. As it was, the girls were healthy and did well, required a 4 week stay in SC for weight gain and tube feeding until a few days before discharge.

It really does depend on the individual situation...even babies born full term can have weight, feeding, breathing and other issues.

I would focus on staying healthy, rested and preparing for their birth and arrival whenever that may be. There is no way of predicting what will happen...and stressing about things that we have no control over doesn't do anyone any good. I original.gif

As for the statistics, the average gestation for twins is 36 weeks.

Enjoy your precious gifts and heres hoping for an almost full term PG and trouble free birth!!?

Hi there
my twins were born @ 38w 4d - we have several girls in our Multiple Birth Club that have had them @ 26-29 weeks and they are fine - and yes - once they get to 26 weeks they normally are ok

I asked my Obs today the dreaded Resuscitation question. He said they have not had any 24 week twin survivors (at a major tertiary hospital with a fantastic NICU).

The survival of SINGLE babies born before 24 weeks is only 15% (and most of those will be damaged).

The multiple birth unit's policy here is that they strongly discourage resuscitation of twins prior to 25 weeks.

BUT... (and there IS some good news!) Although outcomes are WORSE at the extremely prem end of the spectrum, they are much BETTER closer to term (meaning that it is very likely that 36 week twin will sail through, where a single baby might need some help).

Booth, I started getting p/e with Blake just after my 30 week checkup so by the time I saw the Dr again 2 weeks later, it was severe. I was just starting to get p/e with the girls so would've probably made another 2 weeks if Haylee hadn't broke her waters. original.gif

Take care & best of luck. original.gif

I was also told about the 28, then 32, then 34 milestones by my OB. She said she'd be thrilled if we made it to 31-32wks (I have chronic hypertension), and may even consider inducing if we make it to that point!
My twins book says that multiples develop in the womb faster than singletons, in preparation for being born 'early', which is part of the reason they're considered full term at 36wks. It didn't go into further detail, but I thought that was interesting.

boothy - congrats on your pregnancy! Ours are also from ICSI, and I still can't believe it worked original.gif
