Hello,
DH and I have been thinking about names and both really like Dylan for a girl.
I am worried about people not realising she is a girl. i.e kids from school go home and talk about Dylan, parents assuming they are talking about a little boy - but I feel that this happens quiet a lot now with so many ethic names in our society.
Her middle name will be my maiden name which is most commonly a surname but I have heard of it for both boys and girls, but certainly it's not "girly".
I look forward to hearing your comments good and bad!!!

It's a boys name. But then I have met a girl called Jason too!

I'm a fan!
I grew up playing basketball with a girl named Dylan. She was a lovely brunette girl.
I think there might be a member here who has a DD named Dylan

I would definitely assume a child named Dylan was a boy. I don't really like it for a girl.

My son is named Dylan.

There are thousands of perfectly good girls' names in the world, I don't see why anyone needs/wants to give their daughter a boy's name.

I'm sorry, I am not a fan.

Keep it for the boys.
There are so many gorgeous girls' names out there - there's no need to name a girl with a boys' name.

My lovely 14 year old niece is named Dylan. To my knowledge it has never been an issue for her. I love it, and I'm also a fan of Morgan for a girl.
Dylan is a Welsh name meaning something like Great Sea and is traditionally (though not usually in Australian) pronounced more like "Duh-lan'.

Well I really like it.
Drew Barrymore (interestingly another traditionally boy's name

) played a girl called Dylan in Charlie's Angels.
People will figure out she is a girl pretty quickly, whereas having a wierd spelt name is something you are correcting forever. I wouldn't be turned off due to the boy/girl thing if you really like it.
I say go for it!

DS2 is a Dylan so I can't see it being a girl's name.

I got a lot of crap for my DD's name which most people believe is a boy's name.
I say, if you love it, use it.
Alternative spelling Dillon might be less masculine?

If DS's were girls one of them would have been a Dylan.
Go for it.

It just seems to say I really wanted this kid to be a boy...
Maybe the MN is closer to 'truly' unisex? And Dylan could be in the middle.

Leave the boys names alone! What is it with parents of girls stealing names? you don't see parents of boys stealing names from girls!
I think it is quite misogynist for girls to be named with boys names but I have been shot down in flames for voicing that opinion before!
Dylan is a boys name. End of story.

I have a unisex name, and personally I hate it, I used to get picked on in primary school for having a boys name, even though it was spelt in a 'girly' way (it's Shannon, but spelt as Shannyn). Not to mention spelling my out name every single time to make sure i wasn't mistaken for a boy, but that's a different story

I love the name Dylan (currently on my list of faves for a boy), but if I heard someone talking about a 'Dylan' i would automatically assume it was a boy...

I think it's a great name for a girl. Just an aside - my DD's both have names that are more often used as boys names in their countries of origin (Irish and Dutch) but when I mention that to people here they can't imagine either name being a boys name. And my son's name is definately a boys name, but it's also the nickname for a popular girls name.

I would assume boy, but once corrected I don't think it'd be a problem. Just like all the girl Toni's and Peta's out there. It's not a name I'd use, but I think it is cute for a girl, and as it has that masculine sound, it evokes an image of power (in my mind at least!).
No matter what name you choose, there will ALWAYS be people out there who don't like it. So if you and your DH do like it, then use it.

My DSD is Cameron. On her first day at school she was seated on a table of boys as the teacher assumed she was a boy. If you're going to do it, I'd pair it with a very unmistakeably girly middle name, like Dylan Elizabeth for example. This would help a bit, plus gives her the option of using the mn when she is older. DSD has a unisex mn too and i've even come across an EB member with the exact same first and middle name for her son!
My DD has a very rare girls name but because not many people have heard of it they sometimes assume it's a boy's name.

My brother's name is Dylan...... therefore I would find it very weird to think of it as a girls name. The minute I heard the name I would automatically think male.

How about Dilys (or Dylis) or Dilwen instead? This are also Welsh names but more obviously girls names. Various baby naming sites give Dylana as a feminine variant of Dylan. That is pretty atrocious though.

I wanted DD3 to be Dylan. DH didn't agree. I like it for a girl or boy. I also like Ryan for a girl (taught one once).
Girls have been given male names for centuries. Just because a few choose to use them, doesn't make them suddenly "girls" names.
Much better than a weirdly spelt unique/made up name or random word.

I think if you like it you need to go with it and not ask peopls oppinions here!
I find people can be very closed minded when it comes to unisex names! My daughters are Rylie, Indiana and Camryn! and Yes some mums have thought Rylie was a boy, but once they know her and she goes to school everyone knows who she is now! No worries!

I love Dylan for a girls name! I also love Hunter, logan and Blair for girls names! Infact I'm a 110% fan of Dylan!
Don't be the same as the boring ol names, she will LOVE her name. She will be differen't and people will always remember her name!
Good luck and I hope you get to use it!

I really like it. Maybe you could spell it like Dillon as PP suggested. Nothing wrong with unisex/swapping names. I got over the boys name thing a long time ago. Now I like my name for it's uniqueness.

edited to add: My name was a lot more 'boy' swayed when I was little. It feels less so these days. I think it's a trend that will happen for other names too.

For me it's a boys name. I don't really like boys names used for girls. My DS is Rory and there are a number of girl Rory's around these days. I think it's just wrong. It means Red King so male. So Dylan is "son of the sea" that's male. Just my opinion, but many people don't give two straws for meanings so maybe it doesn't bother you OP. But there's way worse with all the made-up dross that people come up with so....

I'm normally of the 'keep boys names for boys' opinion, but I actually don't think this one is too bad on a girl. And this comes from someone who has a boy relative named Dylan.
If you use it, make sure you keep it traditionally spelled, don't 'feminise' it with superfluous Ys and Es etc. Some male names just work on some girls, think Glenn Close and Cameron Diaz.
Good luck
