Hi all

I am very confused. Can anyone say with absolute certainty what the current maternity payment amount is?? I have enquired twice with Centrelink- the last time being about 3-4 weeks ago, and each time I have been told $3079 per baby (going up to approx. $4000 per baby as of July 1 2006). Now apparently out local paper has done a story on the first $4000 baby born at the local hospital (on July 1 2005)!? I have not seen the article, but would not be surprised if they have stuffed up. Seems weird though that the family would have agreed to the story. Anyone???

Thanks
Lindy

Everywhere has said $3079 to me. Sorry. Seems there has been a massive media balls up, not realising the actual impact giving false info can mean.

Maybe the family 'thinks' they are getting $4000 just because their baby was born after July 1.

Thanks Cat

I think you are spot on. Not that I was counting on more money or anything, but is just nice to know!

Hi there Lindy,

Here is the website information from the Family Assistance Website ~ This site is updated regularly so I am sure the rates will be notified. I would agree with Cat in saying that they must have made a mistake.

How much can I get?
Maternity Payment is a one-off payment of $3 079.00 for each child and is paid as a lump sum. It is payable for each child in a multiple birth. If there is a change in care during the 13 weeks eligibility period, the payment may be apportioned between two carers.

Note: Maternity Payment is indexed in March and September of each year. Maternity Payment is not taxable income and it is not considered income for Family Assistance or Social Security purposes.

How do I apply?
Your claim must be lodged within 26 weeks of the child's birth or within 26 weeks of the adopted child coming into your care (if adopted, the child must have been entrusted to your care within 26 weeks from the child's date of birth).

I used to work in a newspaper and something they triple check is anything to do with $$ or the goverment, but I think your local paper hads missed that one!

Hi Lindy

I have also heard so many people say different things about the maternity payment - some saying it is $5000 as at 1 July 2005 and that it is now means tested, but all of them are wrong. I have checked with Family Assistance, looked on their website and also have their booklet which states it is $3000 per child from 1 July 2004 and goes up $1000 every two years ie $4000 on 1 July 2006, $5000 on 1 July 2008. The payment is indexed twice (as Haylie said), per year on March and September hence now being $3079 as it went up on Sept 2004 qnd March 2005.

I hope this makes sense and clears it up for you!
