WDYT? We have our boys name sorted, and were liking Imogen for a girl, now I think it might be too popular. What do you think of Amarlie and if you like it how would you spell it?

depends on how you want to pronounce it. I would say it Amar-li. If you want it to be Ama-li, it would have to be one of the other spellings

I love both of those Names. Imogen is my fav. We have an Amali at daycare and I think this is the best spelling to use! Good luck both names are beautiful!! Xx

I know an Amarlie...wild little lady (just like my Emily!). She is feisty, loud and can hold her own. Good qualities...challenging, but generally an adorable kid!

I don't think Imogen is overly popular, it comes up more often on EB than in the 'real world'. I infinitely prefer Imogen to Amarli (particularly that spelling).
If you were set on the name (which I think I've heard more IRL than Imogen lol), I'd probably go with either Amali or maybe Amahli, Amalie will be mispronounced and Amarli/Amarlie just looks awful, the 'r' is rather ugly.
But personally, I'd go with Imogen.

Who cares if Imogen is popular? IT's elegant, classical and juts beautiful.
Out of the others, probably Amalie, but Amelia, Emily are both much much better.

One of the girls from work came in the other day saying her SIL had finallt had a baby.. They called her Amarlie (not sure of which spelling they used).
I think it's more out there than not. I actually don't mind it though, it's quite pretty

I think Amali is the the nicest way to spell that name, although I prefer both Amalia, and Amelie.
I didn't realise Imogen was that popular?

I really like Amanda's opinion on spelling Amarlie as Amahli.
I also really love Imogen for a name and think that you cannot go wrong. My niece is an Imogen and she is a beautiful little girl.

I've met a few newborn Imogens in recent months through my work, however this is just one small section of the community and can't possibly be taken as as good indicator for popularity

I do! I dont want to choose a name that 5 others have in their class, I like to be a bit more individual with names than have something in the top 50.
Emily and Amelia are both nice and classic but we have immediate family with these two names so dont want to use them. Plus they are too popular for me!
Imogen was number 25 last year

Try to ignore name popularity, she's a fickle mistress.
What seems popular on EB, isn't always so IRL. What is popular on a names registry list, isn't always so for your particular area. Popularity changes often, so I really wouldn't be basing a decision on something so inconsistent, unless it really was a massively popular name (think top name in each state, and you knew heaps of them personally). Imogen is not one of those names however.
And side by side, Imogen vs Amali....they are vastly different. Imogen is classic, a strong name, pretty and timeless. (IMO of course lol) And as a positive there are no issues with variations of spellings. A major problem with Amali is the fact that already there are so many different spelling options for the name, it doesn't seem to have as strong a foundation as Imogen does.
With spelling variations you have pronunciation issues, no consistency with people writing it down correctly every time, even worse future spelling changes from other people, which your childs name may get lumped in with too, and a greater potential for the name to date poorly (though I don't think it would as much as other names around at the moment as it has a stronger standing as a 'real' name than a lot of others).
Rambling, but honestly I don't think Imogen is really popular at all.

You can't predict that though. You could opt for Amali and it turn out there are others in your childs class with the same name. You could choose Imogen and not encounter another with the name for years and years, despite it's appearance on a list last year.
Like I said, popularity is totally fickle. What is popular in one town or area might not be in another, so being guided by a state wide popularity list can be somewhat misleading.
Honestly I don't think Amali is different enough for it give your child something more individual or unique. As I said I know of more Amali (and similar) names than I do Imogen. And with Imogen it is more of a standalone name, whereas Amali is very similar to a lot of other names - Amelie, Emily, Amelia, Mali, Amaya, so on and so forth.

Mara
Marla

Jemima
Phoebe
Hermione
Xanthe
Salome

Agree with this.
Imogen is abolutely lovely, as is Amelie. You really can't go wrong with either.
I appreciate that Rs aren't pronounced by some here, but Amalie & Amarli are not the same name. If you want the second syllable to be pronounced as "ah" or "uh", then there's no need for the random R.
An "Amarli" who travels the world or who works in a company with any sort of international representation will not have her name pronounced the same way as "Amalie" or "Amelie."
ETA: Love some of the alternative names "in the same vein," as suggested by Gudrun!

Depends how you want it pronounced. Personally I do not like Am-r-li . Amelie is beautiful but only that spelling.

I like Amalie
It was actually Sigmund Freuds mothers name and not as many people mispronounce the name since the movie Amelie, that tended to expand peoples ability to pronounce names that aren't Emily or Amelia.

This!! Agree about the spellings being a bit too sharp-edged. And Imogen really isn't around as much as you might think- I'm a childcare worker and I haven't seen ONE, even amongst the babies.
Definitely would go with the French spelling of Amelie. Lovely.
Rather than the other spellings.
Imogen is lovely too.
I know of one Amelie that my DD goes to school with. But I don't know how popular the other spellings are. Personally I wouldn't use any other spelling but Amelie.
I have never met an Imogen. But I love the name.

Amelie is a totally different name to Amarlie though, Amelie to me is pronounced like Emily with an A in front, whereas Amarlie is pronounced Amarl ee (to me).
DF thinks Amarlie is more open to teasing than Imogen. I keep thinking Imagine when I hear Imogen and dont want it to be a name that is open to teasing.
We have an Emily and an Amelia in our immediate family and although I like Amelie I feel it is too close to those.
I think Amarlie is going against what I originally wanted in a name, to be a little different but easy to spell and pronounce. I think we may be back to the drawing board trying to come up with the perfect name. It was so easy with boys names, but I find girls names a little harder to find the "right one".
I think Imogen is so much better.. I love this name.
I don't like the other at all - any of the spellings!

Ditto. There are so many variations of Amali/Amarlee/Amahli and Marley/Mali/Mahlee going around I think you would have a lot of problems with spelling and pronunciation.
