Hi
Only 8 weeks left and DH and I are no closer to agreeing a girls name. He suggested Asher to me the other day when reading a baby name book. I think I like it (and it is coincidentally I saw yesterday the name of the girl who plays a character in an Aussie show Offspring).
Just wondering if its again one of those ones that you'll have to spell all of the time etc... and just be a pain. We have no middle names either but pretty open to them.
We have an Ella Grace for our first DD.
WDYT? (I know I'll get honest opinions on here

)
TIA

Macdolby hi op glad all going well!!
I really like Asher and I know someone who spells it asha which i think is pretty too.... I think the actress you're talking about is great too.
Name goes well with your other dd.
How about Asher Matilda, Asher Florence?

I think it sounds more like a boys name. I wouldn't use it on a girl. Ella is such a pretty girly name so I just don't think they would go verry well together.

Hi Mama P
Also good to see your ticker there! great that we've both found ourselves at this place. I keep checking back at the TTC buddy group, only 2 originals from Aug/Sept left.
Thanks for the name suggestions.
Good luck with the next couple of months!

I love Asha for a girl, Asher seems more masculine although as PP has pointed out, plenty of girl Ashers around too

I think it sounds more like a boys name too, but I like the PP's suggestion of spelling it Asha.
My niece is Ashyer (pronounced Ash-eye-a) which is quite sweet too.

I'm afraid that as a teacher, if I saw "Asher" on a roll I would assume the child was a boy

Contrary to the others, I actually think of it as a girls name - I'm a teacher too & I don't think that makes any difference.
I think I prefer Asha. But like either.
And I think it goes well with Ella too!

I love the name Asher for a girl. (as a side note, Asha is a masculine name, quite common in India).
Unfortunately, our surname begings with a "Sh" sound, so it doesn't flow nicely and we can't use it ourselves

I actually prefer it for a girl too, spelt Asha. I probably think this way because I knew a girl called Asha, now seeing it being used as a male name seems strange to me.

Love it and more as a girls name than a boy. I would use it for either but I do immediately think girl before boy.

I always thought Asher was the masculine version and Asha the feminine. Like Peter and Peta. Another teacher here and the Ashers I have known have been boys. I love the name though!

Asher is a boys name,
http://www.behindthename.com/name/asher.
If you must use it, I would probably alter the spelling to Asha, but I would also try to consider a more feminine name

Asher is a very old Hebrew boys' name. Seeing it on a girl ruins it somewhat IMO.
I think Aisha is fairly pretty.

I do like the name Asher but, I feel it is more of a boys name I don't think it is quite as versatile as Ashley/Ashleigh for a boy girl.
I know someone with a daughter called Ashleigh and I think she did a good think and spelt it the female way so when it's written down you know she's a girl.
Have a think about a list of names and from the list can you tell who is a boy or girl not just saying the name. From a teachers perspective for instance.

Most teachers nowadays would have the smarts and the experience to know that with the wide variety of names now being used, not to assume the gender on any name.
Its a lovely name although if sib-set is important I don't think it goes well with Ella.
Yeah Asher Keddie is great -her name however isn't!
Boys name.

I think Asha is a gorgeous girl's name and if our Isaac had been a girl, he would have been named Asha.
I think it goes really well with Ella too.
How about Anna? Aisha? Aaliyah?

Well, I actually have a little girl Asha. Her father is South Asian heritage and it's a common name in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka so it has meaning for us. The meaning of the name is 'Hope' by the way. We named her before she was born and as soon as she came out she just looked so much like her name. It also goes well with her 'ethnic' sounding surname.
Asher is a boy's name, it's a Hebrew name (I know this because my side of the family is Jewish). You do run the risk of people thinking you have a boy if you use this spelling but there are lots of unisex names so I don't see why you shouldn't use it if you like it.
I think you should go with what you like and what has meaning to you. With both our children we named them before they were born with names that had meaning to us. We didn't tell a soul both times what we had chosen. For us, we chose names with cultural and family significance and which we liked and would match well with their surnames.

Yeah, I like it for a boy but it hasn't done Asher Keddie any harm has it? I would keep it spelt Asher.
I like the suggestion of Anna to juxtapose with Ella.

My mum wanted to name my brother that back in 1984

I think while a little feminine for a boy I'd prefer the spelling Asha for a little girl

A girl I would name Aisling. Asha's all right I guess too.

I have to admit to not at all being a fan of Asher Keddie so for me, the name is associated forever with her, hence I'm not a fan. I also think it's too close to Ella to be complementary.

Not only is the Asher spelling a boy's name, but it specifically means something like "happy man" (it was on our boys' list last pregnancy) so I just couldn't give it to a girl. I take name meanings very seriously.

I see Asher as a boys name and I would not use it for second daughter when your first daughter has such a gorgeous feminine name. Asha would be a bit better but it still isn't great with Ella.

Asha - girl (means hope or wish, is indian sanskrit origin), Asher - boy
I know an Asha, she is beautiful and a gorgeous person (big heart)
I would name a girl that if the one I knew was not a very close friends gf!
lovin it

I was going to suggest Hope for a middle name

What about Asha May

I loved Asher for a name, but i was originally worried it was 'too' strong for a baby - anyway we were watching a tv show and a beautiful lady came on and her name was Ashby - so when our daughter arrived, we named her Ashby May.

As much as I love Asher Keddie, I suspect she is on the verge of becoming a huge, huge star. If you don't mind that association go for it. Asha is a nice suggestion too - although having previously had an Indian friend with that name, I would probably pronounce it Usha so quite a different name to Asher.
