Hi everyone,
Just wondered if anyone can give me any advice for starting solids for my boys who are almost 6 months.
They are being bottle fed.
Did you give a bottle or breast feed before or after giving them food ?
Did you have 2 seperate bowls and spoons or just two lots of food in one bowl ?

Thanks everyone
My little munchkins are growing up

I use one bowl and spoon, don't know if this is a good thing or not other more experienced twin mums may know???

I tried the two bowl thing at the beginning thinking they needed to have their own etc trying to be a good mum but I just didn't have enough hands and it just got so messy!!!! LOL

I think you are supposed to give milk before solids!!! to start with LOL (I think) I have only had 5 kids you would think I would know HOW DID THEY ALL SURVIVE????

Just do what works for you I always say as long as you and the babyies are happy go for it
;p

GOOD LUCK I found I put off feeding my boys solids I just knew it was going to involve alot more work and time then just shoving a bottle in but I have 3 other young kids to run around after too.

Hi Mel

I do not have first hand experience, but it is recommended that you introduce foods in small amounts (ie: 1/2 teaspoon) one at a time (in case of allergy, etc). As a guide- offer solids once a day for the first week, twice a day in the second week, then 3 times a day in the 3rd week. At first they need to be very smooth, then gradually you go to more lumpy textures and eventually finger foods. Start with iron enriched baby cereal (not wheat based). It is also important not to delay the intro of meat too long, as babies' iron stores run out at about 6 months of age. At first you breast/bottle feed first, but by about 8 months solids can come first.

As I said- just a guide, but every baby is different. Your child health nurse should be able to give you some more info on this and also the developmental signs to look for so that you know your babies are ready for solids.

Have fun :-)

Hi.

We have just starting giving our boys solids and i have made their food, so what we do is give them just plain pumpkin or sweet potato for dinner and we have one bowl and two spoons (as dp and i feed one each). We have done this for one week and are going to do it for another week and then the week after that we are going to introduce breakfast as well and see how they go, and do that for two weeks and then after that we are going to introduce lunch too. What we usually do at night is given them solids at about 5.30, then bath at 6pm and then they have a bottle at 6.30pm and then go to bed. They love it and are getting more and more interested every day.

Emma and Brandon are 6 months 1 week and 2 days old! We started solids properly at around 5 months - and it's taken nearly 6 weeks to get to two meals a day. Emma has only just started opening her mouth the last week or so. They are only having about a tablespoon each at present. I use one bowl, and one spoon. Fruit before their 11am bottle and vegies at around 5pm - before bath and bottle. I know I should probably give it after a bottle but it doesn't work for us. I started with mainly pumpkin, apple, and pears. Just started on chicken (tonight I made chicken and vegies for them and they loved it), I've been lazy so far and bought prepared stuff - but it's all so runny so trying to make an effort to make things for them now.

We didn't start solids until 6 months with all my kids. Its now not recommended before then and finally all the baby food companies are changing the age on their labels. I was also trying to delay it as I knew how busy it would become and with the other two boys its like feeding time at the zoo.

I am breastfeeding so when I introduced solids, it was after a feed. I think I did that until about 9 months. (another here that has mush for brains and can't remember). I am pretty sure it would be the same for bottle-fed babies.

I would have never thought to use two bowls and spoons. I just make sure the one bowl has more food than usual in it. My twins are starting to feed themselves atm, so I now give each of them a small amount of food in a bowl with a spoon, but I still do most of the feeding in between them playing with it.

It is alot more satisfying feeding twins as its pretty constant. By the time you spoon it into one mouth, the other one is ready and waiting. Not like with singletons, you have to wait until they are ready.

Good luck

Another vote here for one bowl and one spoon (unless there are two adults of course!). I tried the two spoon thing once but what a hassle! I figured they were sharing so much saliva etc already sucking on the same toys that the spoon wouldn't make any difference.

And I agree with Dolph about not having to wait between spoonfuls with twins. I was so used to shovelling the food into two mouths that when I fed my friend's singleton I almost choked the poor child by feeding at a "twin rate" - I'd forgotten about waiting for the child to swallow!

Hi,

Just wanted to add that we tried rice cereal with the boys first and they hated it. They would turn up their noses (whcih was pretty cute), so then i bought some of the plain vegie prepared stuff and they liked that so i thought i would make some and they seem to like it. I freeze them in the tupperware ice cube trays and they have one cube each. I am thinking of increasing it to 2 cubes each as my boys are little piggies. DP is going away soon so i will be doing the one spoon thing for sure!
I am going to make some pears on the weekend and freeze them so that we can introduce breakfast next week to them and see how that goes. Making them doesn't really take that long (as i am back at work and really don't have much extra time), but i find it much more affordable and really easy to just pop out a few cubes from the freezer.

When we first introduced solids, it was after a breast feed. We used one bowl and one spoon. Have fun with the transition and get the camera ready to take lots of messy food shots!!
