Just wondering....

When did your twins know their own names? Do they know that they are individuals???

At 19 months (actual age, almost 17 months corrected) my girls both think they are Izzy. If you ask Zoe who she is she says 'Izzy' but if you ask her 'where's Izzy?' she points to Izzy! If you ask Izzy 'where's Izzy?' she points to Zoe! If you ask them 'where is YOUR nose?' they point to their own nose but if you ask them 'Where is Izzy's nose?' they both point to the other one... and they just look terribly confused if you ask them where Zoe's nose is! Mind you I am a bit confused by now!

BUT... if you call their names they will usually respond, and to the correct name. For example if I say 'Zoe get your shoes' she goes and gets her shoes!

So I'm just wondering what other's experiences are. If this confusion is just an identical twin thing, or a twin thing or just a regular every day kid thing! I am not sure if my girls are totally confused or just not quite ready to understand the whole 'one person one name' thing.

Hi Kate

I had a very similar post a while ago!

Here is the link if you want to have a look
http://www.essentialbaby.com.au/CFForum/vi...=63&Topic=85799

Now the girls say their own name, but there are times they call themselves their sister’s name & they KNOW what they are doing!

I still think they do not realize they look very similar to MOST people. They think they are different, after all they know who they are.

When we look at photos, more often than not when they see a photo of themselves; they say their sister's name. All interesting.

Hope that helps

My girls (23 months today!) have only started to know who is who in the last month or so. Now they get it right about 99% of the time. Until now if I asked "where's Harriet?" or "where's Eleanor?" they'd both point to each other - very cute. We just kept on using their names a lot and they've got it now.

Hi Kate,

We had exactly the same situation with our girls who are not identical, they were both called Daisy until on Christmas Day last year Daisy said "Wheres Sophie!" We were all very excited and pleased as things were getting very confusing with two Daisys about! wink.gif. From then on they always got it right. So the girls were 20 months when they started using both names, just a bit older than your girls are now. I always assumed that they called each other Daisy as it is easier to say than Sophie but maybe there was a bit of confusion over who was who too. If we say the wrong name now by accident (something my DH does all the time!!) they correct us straight away...."No, mummy I Sophie!"

It is nice when they work it out!

All the best, Beth

Oh I remember that thread now... back then i thought it was completely normal for them to see themselves in the mirror and think it was their sister!!!

And thanks everyoen for your responses.. It's probably a bit early for them to be able to identify themselves or each other by name correctly, which is almost a relief, they have a while longer to figure it out before I think they have serious identity issues!

I guess I was so excited when Zoe started calling out to her sister by name, and then Izzy would reply 'zizzy' when you asked her who she was...I thought maybe that was the start of them knowing whi they are and now 4 months down the track they seem more confused than ever!

But it is kind of cute that they both think they are 'Zizzy' as they say it!

thanks again...
