DD is Susannah Ruth. Girls' names are sorted. Boys' names are the bane of my existence

Middle name could be any of the following (family names):
William
Earle
Francis
My favourite names are Nathaniel and Theodore. DH has said no to both. I want to kick him.
I like:
Julian
Elias
Josiah
Luke
Edward
But I don't love them. They don't jump out and scream "That's the one!" when I think about them. I have a feeling this baby is a boy (don't know though) and I'm scared he won't have a name when he's born! That would stress me way out.
Help me please! Suggestions for combos of the above? Or new names I should consider? Or hypnosis tips so I can get DH to agree to Nathaniel?
ETA - surname is single-syllable, short, harsh-sounding. Much like Pitt.
E(again)TA - no top ten names please, I can't do popular LOL. I even wince at the idea of using one on the top 100 list, hehe! I'm most particular

I think Theodore William or Nathaniel Francis would be great.
From the other names, I think the following are lovely as combos:
Julian Francis
Elias William
Luke William
Luke Francis
Some suggestions:
Susannah and Elliot
Susannah and Alistair
Susannah and Patrick
Susannah and Marcus
Susannah and Daniel
Susannah and Damien
Susannah and Timothy
Susannah and Nicholas
Susannah and Tobias
Susannah and Julius
Susannah and Alexander
Susannah and Andrew
Susannah and Darcy
Susannah and Hamish
Susannah and Xavier
Susannah and Reuben
Susannah and Leon
Susannah and Lucas
Susannah and Atticus
Susannah and Vincent
Susannah and Benjamin
Sorry I was already doing my list when you editted to say no top 10 names. Sorry if any are!

I love Edward Francis.
Robbie
05/04/2011, 08:56 PM
I like Edward Francis too V. Francis is DH's MN and I'm coming around to it.
Dammit. Why does he have to hate Nathaniel. It's perfect. Bah.
Fifi - thank you for your list, it is lovely! I like Nicholas, Alexander and Atticus a lot. There are a few there I love but can't use for various reasons like Andrew and Benjamin (friends' kids' names) but you've captured my taste pretty perfectly!

Not much help on actual names (mainly because boys names were the bane of my life too, I was never so relieved as to find out I was having a girl, lol!) but I would probably try and avoid single syllable names with your surname, as they may sound a bit harsh and staccato.
I like Nathanial Francis and Theodore Francis as well (grrr Robbie's DH) or, and this is surprising me, Julian Francis. I think that goes really well.

I like Julian Francis and Lucas (more than Luke) Francis.
I like the idea of using DH's middle name as your son's middle name - we did that with our DS1 and I think he is the fourth generation to have that middle name
Robbie
05/04/2011, 10:06 PM
Julian Francis IS nice, isn't it?
Perhaps the MN will have to be Francis. Funny, since I've always said I hate it

And what are his suggestions? I can't stand it when certain DH's say NO NO NO NO NO! without suggesting anything!
My best friend went this and in the end said "Well if you can't think of anything his name will be James. Get back to me soon. I have no other suggestions." Her DH was violently against James.
Their son's name? JAMES! LOL!

He's got nothing, crankybee

He hasn't made one suggestion for either child, hehe!
(I'm half-ok with that - he's a big gaming nerd, so if I let him choose he'd probably suggest Boromir or Warlock or Xavarious or something).

Then you have nothing to worry about!

Whatever you like, go with it! He can't say NO if he has no suggestions! Whatever you chose will grow on him!

LOL I'll just go into labour and refuse to push until he agrees

I remember when a game or site or something threw up Elias Gideon for you and I thought that was perfect.
So I'll start by saying I like Elias best from your list and I like it with Susannah! My combo choice would be Elias Earle. (Earle is a cool family-type MN.)
I'm sure these suggestions will have passed your attention and failed to impact but here goes anyway:
Gideon
Balthasar
Emmanuel
Gabriel
Ezekiel
Solomon
Augustus
Raphael
Maximus
Barnaby
Ulysses
Abraham
Emilien
Lucien
Aemilius
Ignatius
Alphonse
August
Silas
Frederick
Linus
Ephraim
Percival
Phineas
Simeon
Valentine
Alfred
Rupert
ETA I'd spare the game names a glance. You never know!

The only middle name that is okay is William.
Please not Earle!
I agree with your DH on Theodore and Nathaniel.
I love Elias and Luke from your list. They are popular because they are great names.
Robbie
06/04/2011, 08:14 AM
Earle is my dad's name Jazzgirl. I love it.

I really shrink away from popular names, something about it just doesn't work for me. Maybe it's because I grew up with a name that isn't unusual, but it was unusual for someone my age. I've never met another person with my name in my age group. I'm sliding further away from using William simply because of its popularity. I understand they are popular because they are great names, but my theory is that there are just as many great unpopular names. I'd like to find one, the search process is just difficult... LOL!
Julian Francis is growing on me. I also like Julian Earle.
Gudrun - Silas is lovely. I am a bit hesitant to use another S name - DH also starts with S and it feels a bit Duggar-ish

I think Elias Gideon came from blondiebear's first name game a little while back

thanks for the suggestion of Ezekiel... I do like that.

I'm sorry to say I've never been a big fan of Nathaniel (despite my huge crush on Nate from Six Feet Under

) so I'm going to advise you not to push for that one! Much prefer Theodore. I also love Julian and Luke, Julian would be the one I'd lean towards because Luke is a little plain compared to Susannah. If you had, for instance, an Anna then Luke would be great.
So, I'm going to vote for Julian Earle. I like Julian Francis but I know both names are considered a little 'soft' by a lot of people (not me) and I think a name like Earle adds a bit more masculinity to it.
Sorry I'm rambling today. Good luck!

No...you push, give birth and welcome your son with the name you have chosen!

And just keep on calling him that! That's what James's mum did! Her DH protested for about 2 days, called him "The Baby" but in the end had to cave because he had NOTHIN'!

I love Earle...and Silas.

Oh wow, I could be reading my own thread - right down to the anti-top 100 and then strong desire to kick.
My picks:
Theodore
Alasdair
Other considerations:
Leonardo
Callum
Josiah - I really like this, its really not used too much
Jonah is nice also
Lucas is my preference over Luke
Reuben
Matthew
Edward
Jonathan
Nathaniel really doesn't do it for me, not sure why not. And I am one of those types that thinks Julian is a bit soft

Silas, I always think of the novel Silas Marner which I just found so depressing - for me its not a positive assocaition even though the character was a good guy and all ends well.
I'd veer away from two S names. I'd also steer away from Francis for a boy - but that's just me. I think Earle is a perfectly fine MN.
That about does it for me - I"m completely drained of boy inspiration I'm afraid.
Robbie
06/04/2011, 10:36 AM
RedsGirl - do you like Edward Earle, or is it too E-ish?
RedsGirl
06/04/2011, 11:27 AM
Robbie - I think so

, and Edward William doesn't seem to flow either (the W thing?), so to completely contradict myself I'd say Edward Francis is the best combo!
What's your Dad's middle name?
I really like Edward - some cute nicknames too.
Gudrun
06/04/2011, 11:44 AM
Re popularity I'm not up with top 100 but my guess would be that from your list maybe only Luke would be on it. Maybe one or two may make it in the future...
Top 3 combos with Susannah Ruth:
1st Elias Earle
2nd Julian Earle
3rd Edward Earle

Brant
Baxter
Bradley
Byron
Clancy
Chester
Charles
Dominic
Edmund
Elliott / Eliot
Emmanuel
Felix
Fletcher

I am not a fan of Nathaniel but do love Nathan. I have a Nathan and he gets Nate.
Nathan Edward
I also like
Josiah - i know a little boy with this name
What about
Judah
Daniel
Callum- i love Callum and it was on our list for baby 2 but it was a girl.
Alec
Luca or lucas
Angus
Jasper
Joesph
Jared
Cayden
Cohban
Hunter
Spencer
Byron
Ezra
Kade
Zane
Lee/Leigh
or what about a hyphenated name. We know a little girl called Cara-Jane and it suits her to a T and also an Ella-Mae.

I'm going to stick up for your DH. He's given you at least one girls name you've vetoed so he's not 100% useless

I like all your names, my pick from your list would be Josiah Earle. I can so see you with an Atticus too.
I think you're having a boy, not that I know much about these things but thats my inkling

Kick up a stink and go with theodore — its perfection!
Other wise Edward is lovely — but there is the Twilight connection for the next few years ( hopefully disappeared quickly after that!)
Lollygobbleblisbom
06/04/2011, 06:15 PM
Elijah?
Love this name...but it does have biblical connotations, just in case you're not into that
Robbie
06/04/2011, 07:03 PM
Lollygobbleblisbomb - Susannah's in the Bible too so it had better not bother me

I like Elijah, but Elias edges it out for me somehow, I think because it's just a touch more rare?
Jaele - he was keen on Chloe, that was his preferred name over Susannah, but I suggested that one too

he just picks what he likes off my list but says flat-out NO to others (all the good ones, in this case).
Strawberry fire - I have decided to forget Twilight ever existed, for the purposes of naming this kid, otherwise I'd balk at Edward.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I'm letting them rattle around up there.
PS DH just walked past and I said "WDYT of the name Elias?" and he went "aw yeh, it's orright". That's as committed to discussing names as he ever gets
leisamd
08/04/2011, 10:11 AM
Yeah, from your list Elias gets my pick.

What about:
Asa
Bartholomew
Darius
Eleazar/Lazarus
Jairus
Jeremy
Reuben
Thaddeus
Kay1
08/04/2011, 10:23 AM
Nathaniel and Theodore are my top two boys names.

Other names I like:
Jeremiah
Jeremy
Benjamin
Amos
Abraham/Abe
Julius
Anson
Benicio
Benedict
Orlando
Bellefin

Everything I can think of has already been suggested...what if we start an EB petition for Theodore to present to your DH? Ask him how many people he'll need to sign and we'll sort it out!
OK I'm going to try really hard...
Vaughn
Leighton
Sampson
Lincoln
Andreas
Damon
Corban
Adrian
Pierce
Byron
Laurence
Leith
OK now my brain hurts it's too early. Keep going for Theodore, Nathaniel or Julian IMO.

I think these are all great.
I totally know what you mean about not loving any boys names. We just found out we're having a boy and I'll be posting many threads like this ones until his birthday I think.
I have to say the names above are much nicer than Nathaniel & theodore. Sorry.

Ha ha. This sounds like me and my James. I also pulled the emergency c/s card to get my preferred name choice - not something I would necessary recommend though.
How about Julius rather than Julian?
Oh bugger! Nathaniel and theodore are great names
I really like Julian from your list too and Elias is nice.
What about Tristan ?
Robbie
08/04/2011, 05:34 PM
MnM - Tristan has an IRL connection that is all negative, so I couldn't see myself using it, though it is a lovely name

mrsjessop - I think I'll push for Julian, since DH didn't say no to it. It's growing on me rapidly. Julius will be a bit too Roman for DH I think LOL. He already thinks the ones I've got on the list are too "out there". I'm not sure what would qualify as NOT out there.
I'm not going to shut up about Nathaniel or Theodore. He can just deal with hearing a lot about them until we have our baby

Hmmm. What about Josiah, people? It's another that sticks out to me. I think the new list is -
Nathaniel/Theodore - but I'm sure he's going to dig his heels in on those.
Julian/Edward - they're equal second.
Elias/Josiah - they're coming in third.
Gudrun
08/04/2011, 06:15 PM
Josiah is a good name but it doesn't have a 'Susannah' feel about it for me and the two ah's seem just a bit strange.
I think the problem is that Susannah Ruth is so good. Leopold?
ETA What's niggling me about Julian is that although it is a Susannah type name for me I'm not keen on the sibling names having the same initial vowel sound. For me it kind of takes a little shine from both names when they are said together. So good but not perfect. I still choose Elias from all your options.
Divine53
08/04/2011, 06:18 PM
Some great names there

My faves are:
Elias William
Julian Francis
Nathaniel Earle
Thedore William
Ahh, in that case Yes Julian is my favourite with Elias in 2nd place.

I really like Julian but can understand finding it hard to let go of Theodore. I mentioned the same name to DH last week and he scoffed loudly.
