I found out last week at my 1st OB appt that I'm expecting twins (and very happy about it I might add original.gif). When he told e about it I was so shocked I didn't think to ask any questions and now I have to wait 3 more weeks for another appt.

I'm really curious to know if they are any major differences between a singleton and a twin pregnancy (other than more severe ms which I'm already experiencing - yuk!). Also, is there anything different I should or shouldn't be doing?

I'm feeling hapy, excited and terrified all at the same time. After having 3 kids already I thought I knew exactly what to expect this pg but being told about twins makes me fell like a complete novice again - not that thats necessarily a bad thing.

Firstly congratulations! And welcome to the Twins and Multiples board - any questions, someone here will be sure to have an idea.

I've only had a twin pregnancy so I can't compare with a singleton pregnancy. Of course everyone is different but symptoms can be exaggerated with a multiple pregnancy (MS, fatigue etc). Also, medically, yours is now a "high risk" pregnancy. Try not to let that freak you out - but there are more things to keep an eye on with a multiple pregnancy so be prepared for more scans etc (I think I had 11 as well as all the ones in my OB's office).

I wrote a list of questions each time I saw my OB so that I didn't forget anything. Anything you want to know in between, just ask here!

[color=Teal]Welcome and congratulations!!

I too have only had a twin pregnancy, so I don't have anything to compare it with. But, I just wanted to wish you all the best.

Congratulations Tanya! Another one who has only experienced twin pregnancy here.

You'll be more closely monitored with more ultrasounds etc, especially if the twins are identical. My OB told me that other than being more closely monitored, most differences were simply size related (about the size of a singleton pregnancy 4 weeks further along!).

There's plenty of girls here with multiples and singletons who could give you a better idea of the stuff drs don't tell you.

Enjoy!

Hi Tanya and Congratualtions to you and your family! Wow!! I am like the other ladies also, My first pregnancy was my now 8 week old twins. I had no morning sickness at all and only suffered slight pre-eclaimsia towards the end and odema.

The only thing I can think of would be the folate and vitamins, but I guess you already doing that as you do it with any pregnancy.

Be prepared for extra monitoring, extra visits to ob/scans etc, need lots of rest toward the end especially and lots when they get here ;p, But I am sure I am not telling you anything "new"...Rally together lots of helpers to assist you with your other children so you can get some rest.

Congratulations again and I look forward to getting to know you more....What a blessing for you!

Congratulations!

I have had two pregnancies. I now have a 3.5 year old girl and 1 year old twin boys. With my twin pregancy I was a little more tired during the first trimester, and I popped out a lot faster. People could well and truly tell I was pregnant by 3 months. In some ways I felt like I went straight from the first trimester to the third. And then when I felt like I was about to burst, it just kept going, and going, and I kept growing and growing...

I had no morning sickness either time, but ms can vary a lot from person to person and prenancy to pregnancy. Some find it worse with twins.

Both my pregnancies were hassle free, and I only had about one extra scan with my twin pregnancy. It depends a lot on what is happening - whether they share placentas or sacs, their growth rate and whether there are complications.

I had a vaginal delivery both times. I wouldn't quite call them "natural" deliveries, because I had epidurals and epesiotomies both times. My daughter was delivered with ventouse, but my sons were born more easily, being a little bit smaller, though the second had to be turned from transverse prior to being delivered, and was delivered breech.

I found the bigger differences were after they were born, in particular twin feeding, getting two into a good routine, etc.

Keep asking lots of questions. Three weeks is such a long time (I remember the wait)!

I've experienced both sides of this fence...nearly five years apart. My singleton pg was great I really enjoyed being pg with my first baby, my OB said I had a textbook pg and delivery (easy money for him!!!)

The twin pg was very different. Although no major complications, I just felt BLAGGHHH for most of it. Sick...yes! Tired...yes! Uncomfortable...yes! I really can't say that I enjoyed the experience as a whole, but the outcome was well worth all the trouble. My OB kept telling me that I was doing well and he was very happy with my progress and I really tried not to worry about all the bad stuff (I paid my OB to do all the worrying for me!!!!!)

I did have my girls early, natural birth, although T2 was breech. If I could have the same wonderful outcome without all the pg hassles I would do it again!

All pgs are different, it will depend alot on your personal wellbeing, your size and level of fitness and general health. Your mental attitude also has a big bearing on how you feel too. It is important to be positive and not to dwell on what MIGHT happen.

Once you feel comfortable that things are progressing well, start to get yourself organised, because you will possibly not feel up to running around later in your pg.

Relax and enjoy the attention, and take care of you!!

Thanks for all your tips and congratulations. It's so comforting to know theres somewhere I can go to chat to people who know exactly what this is all about. I can see myself being on these boards alot in the coming months and I look forward to getting to know you.

Off to pack now. We're all flying to the Gold Coast tomorrow for what willl no doubt be our last holiday for quite some time. I intend to make the most of it (despite the MS).

I'm on my first pregnancy too, but one thing my Ob told me when we found out it was twins was to double my Calcium and Iron supplements.

I guess it depends on how your levels are to begin with, so maybe ask your Ob about it. I had low iron and early-onset osteoperosis to start with!

Congratulations again!
