Hi everyone!

Over the weekend I started to get severe pain in my groin and pubic area. (I think I overdid it with the cleaning on saturday -just mopping and toilets/basins, DH did the vacuuming and showers) Sitting down is ok but getting up, in and out of the car and walking is excruitiating!(sp?) Luckily we had an ultrasound booked for monday morning and the sonographer did an internal ultrasound, as I think they suspected I was in labour. Apparently my cervix is still closed which is good, but the pain is still there and I don't think I can cope with this for another 6 weeks! ( My OB promised to look at inducing me after 38 weeks, as apparently a shared placenta has trouble sustaining the babies after this time?)

Has anyone else experienced this? What did you do? Someone mentioned Pelvic symphasis and not being able to walk in another thread. Could it be this? What is this? My sister said something about the pubic bone separating? Any suggestions of what I can do?

I spoke to my OB's receptionist and after checking with my OB, they suggested Physio. I have an appointment with the hospital physio tomorrow afternoon. They mentioned something about a belt?

Silly me had all these plans to catch up with friends and do the lunch thing and shopping now that I have finished work and now it looks like the couch and the telly are going to be my best friends......I so want to do what is best for my babies and for them to stay in there for as long as possible, but this pain is terrible....I feel very selfish complaining....

Hi Drew,

You poor thing, I got that and I know it is soooo uncomfortable, I had it on the left and like you felt walking impossible, I used to find putting pressure on the painful spot helped but you do tend to look a bit weird walking around like that! I didn't try the belly belt but think that could have helped, my OB said it was a pulled ligament and would go once the babies arrived and sure enough it did but sorry to say made the last part of my preg a nightmare.

Swimming did help a bit but I think mainly you just have to rest and stay put on that couch.

Sorry to not have anything positive to say on this but I still remember that pain now, I did mine by being stupid and having a swimming race and just stretching wayyyyy to far.

Hope you can find something that works for you,
Heather

Edited to add - get your friends to come over and visit you as it's painful going out and they can bring something yummy for lunch too!

I also had terrible pain - mine was mostly at the back of the pelvis. I tried going to a chiropractor for very gentle manipulation, don't know if it helped, though. Hydrotherapy was good (wallowing in the water - I was worried Greenpeace would come and throw wet sacks over me!).

What happens is that during pregnancy your body produces relaxin which is meant to soften the ligaments of the pelvis to allow you to give birth. Sometimes, though, there's a bit much and/or the extra pressure of a multiple pregnancy means that the pelvis comes apart too much - hence the pain.

I found rolling over in bed, standing on one foot (eg to put on trousers) and generally walking excruciating. I tried a pelvic belt but to be honest I don't think it helped much. I spent the last few weeks on crutches which at least took some pressure off. Amazing what good service you get as a very pregnant woman on crutches. I think they all just wanted me to hurry up and get out of their shop before I gave birth!

It did make the last few weeks very miserable and I really couldn't do much except go to OB appointments, hydrotherapy and shops/cafes that I could park right outside. It was one of the reasons I begged my OB for an induction at 37 weeks. I'd had a scan which showed they were good weights and I just couldn't cope anymore. There's only so much lying on the couch watching TV that one girl can do! (now of course I would love a day like that....)

Take care

I also had bad back and pelvic pain.

You have to just relax. By 33 weeks I could no do any housework at all without being in pain. Just get some good movies and books and sit and relax.

Enjoy the rest, in a few weeks you will wish you rested some more.

Full term for twins is 38 weeks not 40 like a single pregnancy so you will not go past that. Safe time is 36 weeks and I was induced at 37 weeks with perfectly healthy twins who needed no help at all after birth.

Take it easy and if you are still strugling in a couple of weeks, asked to be induced. But try to get to 37 weeks if you can as the babies will have an easier time sucking. This will make things easy for you.

Good luck

Drew - I am thinking of you Lovie! Oh please try and relax it seriously is the best and sometimes the only thing you can do. I got very bad groin pain too and Hayden was breech so it was his legs engaging! You will make it, you can I know it!

The girls are right the relaxing is the hardest thing to do but the best and you will feel so much better for it. Every extra week is so important and also getting you closer to being able to have the babies with you straight after the birth.

We are here for you - vent all you like, we have been there. Once you have your babies - you will forget any pain!

Hi Heather, Maree, Ali, Haylie and Megan

Thanks so much for your replies! I actually replied yesterday but it logged me out when I clicked on reply and I lost my post. I was too sore and tired to re-type so thought I would try again tonight.

I went to the physio yesterday and you guessed it – I have pelvic symphasis - where the pelvis relaxes too much and hence moves to give pain. They fitted me with a maternity pelvic belt but unfortunately you can’t sit down in it. She said it won’t squash the babies but when I sat down in it they went crazy kicking and moving so she said it’s probably best not to sit in it. So, as you said Maree, I will wear it when I can but I don’t think it will be much use. What if I am out and walking around and then want to sit, do I reach down and go RRRRRRRIIIIIIIIPPPPPPP! (it’s joined with Velcro) – not a good look!

I think I will take all of your advice and just try to sit around and relax. I definitely know that I want my babies with me straight away as you said Haylie, and with what everyone on the forms has always said, resting is the best way to keep them in there longer, so they don’t need to go to special care. But I guess being a woman, there’s always something to be done and it’s so difficult sitting around looking at the dirty washing/dishes and other housework to be done – but I‘ll try.

I was out most of today (at snail’s pace) so I could get all the mother’s day presents sorted, so I can just sit and relax all day tomorrow and Saturday. I am planning on spending tomorrow in my pj’s! I would have killed for a day like that when I was working. Why is it so different when you know now that you can? Yes, it is lucky Megan that I can just sit and don’t have other toddlers to chase around and I m sure that when the bubs come, I will treasure these days of relaxation.

Heather and Maree - I am actually booked into some pre-natal aqua classes so I hope this helps too. Maree you made me laugh with the Greenpeace comment. I felt the same!

Heather – I think I will also take your advice and have some friends over instead of trying to go out.

Ladies, have any of you continued to have this pain after the birth of your bubs? The physio said that some people give birth and it goes away, some don’t get it until after the birth and some still have the pain after the birth. I don’t think I could cope with this for the rest of my life.

Thanks again for all of your support!

Hi Vanessa

Thanks for your post and concern. I am ok (but still in pain) and trying to rest as much as possible now. I can't believe that your OB made you go to 40 weeks with twins, after all the pain you were experiencing!! Thankfully mine said he would talk about inducing at 38 weeks, but he had said before that he had delivered twins at 40 weeks before. Maybe she wasn't in any pain?????

Thanks again!!!

40 Weeks OMG!! That is amazing, what a great job. I hope you are starting to relax a little more now and the pain is easing for you. I am sure the belt will come in handy whilst you are up and walking at snail pace. I only felt the groin pain after the c-section later that night when I got out of bed, but its just a weird feeling not pain IYKWIM. I have had such a great recovery and the only pain I now have is the slight ache at night where the epidural spinal block went in.
When I was on full house rest for the last 2 weeks it was 42+ degrees so i didnt need much convincing to stay indoors and enjoy foxtel!

You will have your precious babies in your arms before you know it!

Mel and Drew - Have you gys tried a body pillow? I found that really helpful towards the end. It feels as though there are 3 in the bed - I warn you!! It was helpful for lifting legs whilst sitting on the couch too. Just a suggestion......

Oh how I remember this pain. I had severe pubic symphysis dysfunction from 16wks and it brought me to my knees crying many days (and nights). I used a physio and chiropractor which helped "ease" the pain but it never totally went away (still hasn't yet - 6months after their birth).

One other thing that I did was use an ice pack, front and back of your pelvis. This helped me. As your ligaments loosen you'll find your pelvis actually moves which is where the pain comes from and the pubic bone can rub on the cartlidge which causes inflammation...that's where the ice pack comes in. I used bags of peas and it was winter time !!! but it did help.

Just rest...that's all you can do. I begged my OB to take my twins out early but of course she wouldn't. I just had to soldier on and stayed home a lot !

Good luck and take it easy.

Hi Haylie

Yes! I have a body pillow but don't use it that much. I keep it under the bed in case I have a case of not being able to get to sleep, then I drag it out and usually fall asleep straight away. Maybe it's just the change of position? IKWYM about it feeling like there's others in the bed when you use it!!!! Sometimes I wake and scare myself when I have kicked it away and it makes funny shapes under the doona!!!

Thanks so much for your replies Megs , Haylie, Mel. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. Only 3 and half weeks to go! and i can't wait to meet our little bubs. I have managed to slow right down these days - most activity has me panting and losing breath anyway and a trip to the shops lasts about an hour max. The pain has settled with taking things easier so thank you all for your advice - now I know that rest really means REST!!!!
