Hi Again
Your probably getting sick of my questions by now, but i'll ask anyway!
My Dr has told me to take 2 of the Elevit tablets per day...Now, I know that the normal dose is 1 tablet per day for a singleton pregnancy.
The thing is that the elevit vitamins contain 500iu of Vitamin D per tablet & everywhere I read says not to take more than 800iu of this vitamin when pregnant as excessive Vitamin D can cause birth defects. If I take 2 of these, I will be getting 1000iu perday.
My question is - Was anyone else asked to take more than one Elevit per day when pregnant with their multiples? I am pregnant with triplets & the 800iu rule probably is a little different for twins or triplets, but I just am a little curious as to what every one else took/is taking?
I would call my Dr, but he doesnt work until Monday now & I have just started to worry about this now & was wondering if you guys can put me at ease once again!
Thanks again
Cheers, Lilymurray

Hi Lilymurray
I was the same as you with lots of questions in the beginning of my pregnancy and also felt like I was asking too many questions....but please don't feel like that. The ladies on this thread are all so wonderful and are always happy to share their experiences and give advice. Always feel that you can ask away!
In answer to your question - My OB told me at my 16 or was it 20? week appointment that I needed to continue taking folate. I was a bit upset that he hadn't told me earlier as I had read and had been told that I only had to take it until 12 weeks, so was a month (or more?) without it. So at the moment, I am taking one elevit and folate as well. The pharmacist told me the last time I purchased both that there is enough folate in elevit and there's no need to take extra, but I explained that my OB said I had to take both as I am having twins.
I'm not sure what the dosage is for triplets, but I imagine that it would be higher? There are some triplet mums on this thread that might be able to help with this. But, yes, apparently you have to take more for multiples so the recommended doses we read about are just for singletons. I'm not sure about the Vitamin D dosage and what you have read, maybe someone might shed some light?
I am also now taking rhaspberry leaf capsules. Apparently it tones the uterus and makes childbirth easier? I have read a few studies that midwives have done and they swear by it. I am going to discuss these three things that I am taking with my OB at my appt next week, so hopefully I'm not overdosing...
I hope I have helped, probably not...sorry!

Thanks girls.
That helps alot. I think I will stick with the normal dose of 1 a day untill I can call my Dr on Monday. I guess that way there is no harm done.
Thanks again

Hi lilymurray,
When we found out at 11 weeks that we were expecting twins, my ob said to continue to take folate and iron throughout the pregnancy.
**At my 28 week check I asked my ob about raspberry leaf tea or capsules and she said to NOT consume it before 36 weeks in case it does promote uterine activity and bring on premature labour!
After 36 wks, she said it's fine as studies have shown no ill effects, and may/ may not make a difference to labour-it's hard to measure to determine.
Cheers

Hi There,
My Ob told me to take 2tabs of elevit per day for the duration of my pregnancy which I did with no problems. I think he wanted me to have the extra iron. Best to check with your Dr if you're concerned though.
Good luck with your pregnancy

Hi Julie
Yep - My Dr was worried about my Iron too & thats why he switched me from the blackmores to the Elevit & asked me to take 2 tabs per day.
I was just unsure about the Vit D quantity when taking 2 tabs per day, but if your Dr asked you to do the same then it is obviously not uncommon for multiple pregnancies.
Thanks everyone for your help here

Cheers, Lilymurray
