I had my baby boy last week and we registered him as "REX"...

i and my husband were happy about his name till two of my Australian friends told us that name REX is usually given to dogs, not to human baby in Western countries (US, Uk, Australia etc)...

They also told us our son might be laughed in school when he grows up because he has funny name...

me and my husband are both from Asia and we are not so familiar with English names.

Please give us advice if name REX is strange as boy name?
what do you think of name "REX"?

We are thinking of changing his name seriously as soon as possible if name Rex is not suitable for human name..

thank you..
Ianthe
I think Rex is a good strong name.
Amanda_R
Definitely gets used for dogs a lot in Australia. It's also the name of a regional airline: http://www.regionalexpress.com.au/

We were camping over the long weekend and a little boy at the neighbouring campsite was called Rex. My Dad had a friend called Rex. There is also Rex Hunt, the fisherman on tv!!! I think your friends were being a little harsh and if you like the name then that is what is important. It's good to be original - who wants to have the same name as 10 other kids in class at school!

There is nothing wrong with being original and different. It's creative and great!

I went to school with a boy called Rex, and there is one at my local child care center at the moment.

Don't worry about people naming their dogs people names. I have a dog called Max, that doesn't mean it's unusable as a name for a human.
Georgie83
I think it's cute! better than some names going around ATM....
motherwho
P.S. The name Lucy gets used a lot for dogs too but that doesn't stop anyone from using it. It's not like you have called your baby Fido.

It's a great name! If you love it, use it!

Wasn't there a TV guy named Rex? A fisherman?

I do think of it as a dog's name but lots of names are animal names these days. If you like it and it suits him, I would keep it.

Congratulations on your baby!
BoyMaker
Rex is cool don't change it. I have a Tex!!! Rex is given to dogs but so are a lot of other human names like Sam or Max. I had a dog called Ben so that is a stupid thing to say.
countrymel
It is a very strong and masculine name.

Yes it is used for dogs as well - but so are lots of other names (Tess, Jess etc) that are common 'human names'.

I think it is a fine name, and one your son will be proud to carry. Your friends were very rude.
Rumply
Rex is a very cute name.

I saw a parent the other day that named their child Comet... now THAT is a dog's name.

Rex is a proper boys' name. I went to school with a boy called Rex, and I know someone who named their son Rex (he is probably about 9 years old). It is certainly not strange.

It is also a name that is sometimes given to dogs. And there is the TV show 'Inspector Rex' which is about a police dog. But there are lots of human names that are often given to dogs (and cats) that are also popular with parents. Some names that come to mind are Max, Molly and Sophie.

To me, a 'dog only' name would be something like Spot, Fido or Rover.

I think your friends are a bit mean, and don't know what they're talking about.

Congratulations on the birth of your son.

If you are happy about the name you have chosen for your son, and it sounds like you were before people stuck their noses in, then that's all that matters. If you look at all the weird, strange, made up, badly spelt names in use at the moment I think Rex will not get teased at school. His is a strong, easy to spell, easy to say but not too common name. All these are positives in my opinion.

Yes there are some dogs called Rex I guess but there are lots of names used for both people and pets.

Enjoy your baby Rex.

mad madam mim
sorry but I do immediately think of it as a dogs name
bonnybabe
I can think of heaps of names used for pets and humans:
max
rex
butch
lucy
maggie
Jess

You don't need to change it or worry about anymore bullying than the other kids would get. Real dog names that you would get teased for are things like:

fido
buster
spot
rover
etc.

Congratulations on your baby! I know one dog called Rex or we call him Rexy, but in saying that, how many boys are called Max or girls called Jessie and Roxy or even the name Toby, I would consider them all dog names too. So I wouldn't worry about it too much, if you go to Paws.com.au (a pet website) they list all the registered dog names and people call their dogs anything so I wouldn't worry about it at all. These days I think anything goes!!!

yummy!

Rex is a very cool name. I would keep it!

It is a legitimate human name and means king.

Congratulations on the birth of Rex. original.gif

I love it, it was on our shortlist for DS2, just not brave enough to use it. (We tend to play it safe & boring)

DD goes to school with a Rex, I think it's gorgeous.

DS2 ended up being Max, which is a highly used pet name, doesn't concern me in the least. biggrin.gif

I've never known a dog called Rex so it would never cross my mind that it was a dogs name.

There are lots of names that when I hear them I immediately think dog but only because I know a dog with that name. Like Trevor, Spencer, Zoe, Jackson etc. But they are all normal names.

Unless you named your child something like Fido or Spot then I see now problem.
Bel Rowley
I like Rex and see no reason why he would be teased about his name. I know a beautiful little boy called Rex.
shelly1
To be honest I have know 3 dogs called Rex and automatically think of it as a dogs name. There is a very popular show called Inspector Rex that is about a dog detective so thats where alot of people would get the connection from.
whale-woman
I too know a lovely human Rex but have never met a canine Rex. We do know a Jack and a Charlotte of the canine variety though... maybe kids given those names should get them changed?

Keep it, it's a cool name!
aphraell
Cool name! And congrats on the birth of your son

I don't know any dogs named Rex but do know several humans including my uncle.

I say keep it if you love it! You will never find a name that everyone agrees with you on so just find one that you are happy with.
soapy
I knew a Rex who was an old man. I guess it is used for dogs but I never thought of that in relation to his name.
BuzzyB
Please don't change it, Rex is a great name for a boy. Our friends son is called Rex and it really suits him.
RYU
thank you sooooo much for your reply, everyone cry1.gif

I was very sorry all day to my son coz we thought we named him strange name...

I and my husband both have no idea about English names, so your comments help us alot.

I will let my husband read all the comments and we will discuss it again tonite.

Thank you very very much....

I like the name Rex and we are considering using it if we have a boy.. but we are a little worried about the dog connection too. But I think with all the weird and wonderful names people are using these days, Rex is pretty tame
fifi-trixibelle
I've only heard it used as a dog's name but even if that wasn't the case I know I wouldn't like it as a human name anyway.
baddmammajamma
Rex is one of my favorite boys' names of all times -- I think of the great actor Rex Harrison...and the hottie in my high school named Rex (wonder if he's aged well...) wink.gif

Fabulous, fresh choice, OP. Well done!
lorello
I think its a a great name I know a 80 year old man with the name Rex, I never associate it with a dogs name. i think it is a really nice boys name.
peebs
DH's grandfather was Rex. It's very much a human name. I've never known a dog called Rex.

Congratulations!

I know a great little boy named Rex and I never think of a dog when I see him, its a great name.
vanessa71
I know it is often used as a dogs name, but it's still definitely a name for boys.

The other thing it reminds me of is the Antz Pantz commerical from quite a few years back.

Audrey Hepburn
Please don't change his name. Rex is a great, strong, boy's/man's name.
No girls here
I really like it! I would be considering it myself this pregnancy but I need something longer than one syllable.

I have met dogs called Rex, but it wouldn't put me off using it.

cathode
I had a doberman called Rex. I associate it with a dogs name.
~ky~
I know that Rex is often used for dogs, but honestly, I have met more dogs with my daughter's name, Bella than I have named Rex.

I have fond memories of a wonderful friend of my uncle named Rex who was a gentle giant of a man who cared for all animals and children. I have met a few other boys and men named Rex and I think they all suited their names. It's a lovely, strong name with a regal connection in the meaning.

Congratulations on the birth of the no doubt, gorgeous, Rex!

I love love love the name Rex and whilst some people will say "it's a dog's name!" I don't care...I will be naming any future son of mine Rex!
janbabe
Rex is a great name- my son's name is Tex. original.gif
mrsjessop
I think it is a cool name. It is my brother's nickname.
DrDC
My brother's name is Rex and it suits him fine! Yes, sometimes people would ask if it was a dog's name (and then he would tell them some made up story about being named after his parents' favourite dog!). He also was often asked what it was short for (usual answers" Rexinald or Rexona - neither of which are true, of course!!). It's an easy name with a great meaning and only one way of spelling it (I hope! Please tell me there are no alternatives!!)
Anyway, I think you should go ahead and use it.
