Hello all,
I'm bored and am limited to pretty much staying in the house. I was doing pregnancy pilates and walking 3 times a week, but have had to stop all of that. I weighed myself this morning and Ive put on nearly 13 kilos already!!! I'm just over 23 weeks.
At my scan last week, the babies were weighing 517g and 590g - so really only one kilo of my weight gain is actual baby!!!
It got me thinking that I'm going to be pretty heavy by the end of this!!! How much weight did you put on with your twin pregnancy????
Thanks!

I put on well over 20kg with my twin pregnancy, about 5 more kg than with my singletons.
By the end of my pregnancy I stopped weighing myself!
I really struggled to do any meaningful exercise by about 25 weeks, it was just too uncomfortable and put a lot of pressure on my groin area.
But, if it's any consolation, between bf'ing the bubs and running after 4 children under 4, by the time the twins were about 8-9 months I had lost all the pregnancy weight and a few extra kilos as well!!

I didn't weigh myself but I am guessing I put on a sh*tload.
There is evidence to suggest though that highmaternal weight gain, especially early on, is linked to better sized babies.
Your body is doing an amazing thing, just go along with the weight gain

10 kgs. This was the same amount I put on with my singletons.
I am extremely lucky that i don't get fluid and am tummy only.....

I'm still 10kg lighter than pre pregnancy weight
I need to start eating more, I sometimes end up vomiting because my stomach is empty yet I feel full, it's a weird thing lol.
I probably only have 2 meals a day, and don't really snack either. And I basically force myself to eat those two meals because I never actually feel like having them IYKWIM?

Between 20-25kg! Although lost all but 5kg within days of the birth (and am still holding on to a couple of those kg's). I put most of my weight on near the end of the pregnancy. I think they say 18-20kg is normal for a twin pregnancy, but everyone is different and it also depends on your weight pre-preg. I wouldn't be worried. I was always more worried about not putting on enough weight (which in the end I needn't have worried about!)

I had lost 10 with ds1

interesting question, I was wondering the same.
Thanks to those who replied with the relation to thier other pregnancies.
With DS I didn't gain a gram, when I went for my 6 week check up I was 10 kg's lighter.
I am currently over weight, and was back then too, so I guess my body has 'alot' to live off lol.
But because of the fact that I am already over weight I was scared at the prespect of a twin pregnancy. I am 11 weeks now, and have lost 1kg. Hope I dont gain to much!!

5 days post birth i was 12kg lighter than i was when i fell pregnant.

I put on about 8kgs and was lighter the day after birth than before. Plus I put on a heap of fluid in the last two days with PE.
Qixote- you really need to up the food you eat. I too found eating near on impossible as I felt full all the time and by 30 weeks if I ate more than a cup of food I vomited as a certain little person had his head under my stomach and would push it up causing sudden vomiting
I was put on Sustagen. I drank it ever so slowly sip by sip all day ( made with water as I was unable to tolerate milk) From 32wksto 34wks( delivery) this was literally all I ate with the exception of breakfast.

I lost 8-10kg because I couldn't keep much down for the first 20 or so weeks.

20kg. 15 of that was gone within a week of delivery. 5kg is sticking around, but I suspect quite a lot of it is boob!
I gained 1kg/week for most of the second trimester. early weight gain (if from a good high protein diet) corrolates with higher birthweights for multiple pregnancies, so be proud of your pud!
don't discount the weight of placentas and fluid at this stage either. the babies' support apparatus would weigh more than they would right now!

On the day they were born (a year ago tomorrow - happy 1st birthday boys!!) I was 27kgs heavier than pre-pregnancy. I have 2kgs to get back to pre-pregnancy weight - when I came home from hospital I had lost 19kg of the 27kgs.
I kept asking my ob how much weight I should put on but he never told me and never weighed me.

I put on 23kgs. Babies were a total of almost 6.5kgs of that. 3kgs of placentas and who knows what the fluids weighed, so all up 11.5kgs per baby.
Before I did IVF I was around 60 -63kgs and was about 65kgs when I fell pg. I am only 5ft3in tall with a short torso and didn't put much weight on except on my belly, as a result, I now have the lovely twin apron. I am back to around 65kgs and finding it really hard to loose the last 5kgs.
Quixote, maybe small snacks all day would be better for you rather than meals.

Thanks everyone! I love reading other peoples stories.
I was about 66kg when I feel pregnant - and I'm quite tall (175cm). Ive always had a slim build. Ive been eating lots of protein and eating really really well, so I'm glad its all worth it. I guess I will keep it up and hope they continue to grow big and strong.
I must say though, my butt and thighs have increased in size a fair bit. But DP says that to "balance me out so I don't tip over"!!! Bless him.
QUIXOTE - Have you mentioned this to your OB? I think you need to try to eat more than what you are currently eating as well. Sorry!!

I put on 17kg with the boys, and delivered 6.85kg worth of baby.
The most I put on with my singletons was 13kg with my first, who was 3.97kg born.

Thanks for posting this question.
I'm also 23 weeks with twins but so far have only gained 5kg and that has all been in the last month. I was fairly slim before falling pregnant and seem to be all belly now. I was worried about this and did ask my OB - who told me that I was right on track and to expect more rapid gain from here on.
It is good to see that everyone is different and I'm just going to try to go with the flow and enjoy being able to eat the huge quantities of food that I need to satisfy my constant hunger!
Cheers

I gained 17kg. My Ob doesn't routinely weigh pregnant women but the scales were there so I jumped on each visit for my own interest. I could not comfortably exercise in pregnancy. I was sick for the first 15 weeks and then too big with constant braxton hicks contractions after that.
We worked out at the end that in my belly I was carrying
6.3kg of baby
2kg of placentas
2kg of amniotic fluid
1kg of enlarged uterus.
I was back to pre pregnancy weight the first time I weighed myself after the birth which happened to be about 3 weeks later. Unfortunately my pre pregnancy weight was above a healthy BMI and breastfeeding didn't help lose any of it!
Remember that what you gain is not just baby, there is amniotic fluid, two placentas, and an increased blood volume. By the time you are at term there is 40% more blood in your veins than pre pregnancy. That counts for weight, as does the fluid you might accumulate in your tissues. I had lower legs like tree trunks and fat sausage toes for the last ten weeks.

I think each leg weighed a couple of kg more than usual, at least it seemed that way!
ETA I have never eaten so much food in my life as I did in the last trimester. I couldn't get enough!

Eat away! When I realised I had gained 30kgs at 35 weeks, I stopped looking!! Babies were born at 36 weeks and are now 6 months old. Breastfeeding twins has had massive weight loss impacts for me - have only a couple of kilos to get back to 60ish... and I certainly have not had time for exercise. Pre-eclampsia did not help me out on the scales either - my son was 6lb 3 and daughter 5lb 5oz
My singleton pregnancies were both around the 20kg mark - my body loves a bit of fluid!

I didn't put on any

and weighed less with twins onboard at 35 weeks than I did before I fell pregnant.
By the time I was 12 weeks I had lost over 10 kilos and then never really put much on from then until about 33 weeks: it was hard enough to not keep losing more. I spent a lot more time vomiting than I did eating. For the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy I suddenly got my appetite and did nothing but eat (and spewed lots too!) but still didn't manage to gain the amount I lost. I looked fantastic after I had the boys (20 kilos lighter than I had been in a long time!) but unfortunately it didn't stay off

.
Just wanted to share that for anyone else who is really sick and not gaining at all: my boys were 2 kilos at 35 weeks so their size was OK for their gestation.

I weighed 62kgs at my 1st OB visit (10weeks?) Weighed 77.5 the day the girls were born. So 15.5 gain. Weighed 67.5 the day after they were born. My size 16F boobs must have been a kilo+ each
I struggled to maintain weight when breastfeeding. I dropped another 10kgs in the 1st month or so and almost eight years later still weigh less than my original pre pregnancy weight. Seem to stay around 57kgs these days.
I breastfed for 12 months. Definately changed my bodyshape completely. My bum disappeared during the pregnancy and my boobs never recovered. I do miss the old ones

and there is no way my stomach was ever going to look the same again.
My metabolism seems to be quicker and one glass of anything is enough to make me tipsy.
One of my friends used to always have a chuckle when skinny me would walk around carrying 2 very chubby babies! you could definately see where my weight had gone.
My 2 weighed 2.4 and 2.6 at birth 38+1 weeks

I put on 22kg and lost 18kg after the birth (7.16kg of that was baby). So i only had to lose 4kg to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Has been hard to shake the last kg. I stopped breastfeeding after 8 weeks. My boobs have disappeared and seemed to have ended up around my tummy area!!! Stupid twin skin!!!

Just eat what you normally eat....don't think because you are having twins that you have to eat for two. I made that mistake! and I seriously regret it.
My twins are 2 y.o in 2 days and I'm still struggling with the last few kgs. I lost loads of weight really quickly with ds1 and more within about 6mths. I got loads of compliments since I was actually looking better than pre pg. Big mistake....I let go with the twins, ate loads and I shouldn't have known better since it's my 2nd pg and they say subsequent pgs, weight is much harder to shift.
I put on over 20kgs with the twins. 9mths after they were born, I was still 70kgish. The other day I weighed myself an I am finally down to 60.5kgs. I hovered around 65kg for mths and then 63kgs for mths.
It doesn't help that with my post belly birth, I bloat up loads during that time of month, during ovulation and after I eat (anything).
In my culture, ideal weight is number beginning with 4, even if it's 49.9 kg. I am hoping the weight will still come off but it's just really really slow. There's no point in drastic diets because I already eat healthily anyway and if I change my diet then after dieting, I will put it back on straight away. I hate those type of diets. I try to not eat anything after 7pm and drink only hot drinks i.e hot water, tea, green tea etc to boost metabolism....definitely nothing gassy as it will make me bloated.

I put on 25 kilos with my twins and lost most of that within a week of giving birth so it was mainly fluid and baby weight. Silly me then kept eating like I was pregnant though so I ended up gaining a lot of weight back.

Are you serious? You are aiming at this weight because of a cultural idiosyncrasy?
I have read some seriously stupid crap on EB but that takes the cake.
How about a weight that is healthy for your height and body frame. Which is all anybody should aspire to with absolutely no reference to race and culture. After all tiny feet is a cultural desire too but binding went out last century because it is dangerous, cruel and stupid
I put on about 20-25kg. I lost weight during the first trimester. After birth I lost majority of that without realising, I still hanging on to 5kgs. Pre-pregnancy I was a bit overweight, so could use to loose more.
BF makes me SUPER hungry, so I will have to be especially careful as they start to wean ( I have awhile thankfully).

I put on 16kg with my twin pregnancy, and lost the majority bar 3kg in the first month.
For comparison, I put on 21kg with my first singleton, but had a much lower starting off weight as I put on 8kg with IVF before getting pregnant with the twins.
I need to lose 8-10kg to get to my pre-pregnancy weight before my first. I will settle for 5kg though.
Like Gem, I am BF and always hungry and eat HEAPS so have actually put on weight in the last few weeks.

I was just stating a fact. I never said I was aiming for that weight. My ideal weight is 55kgs but 58 to 60kgs is a realistic aim. Pre pg I was already around 59 or 60kgs. There's no way I will ever be lees than 50kgs, I don't think I've ever been since maybe 15y.o!!
Even at 55kgs, I was also considered bigger back in Asia.
But why do u always jump to conclusion? I have a lot of friends that are below 50kgs and it's quite normal. I would never criticise them, call them stupid or think any less of them.
QUOTE

Actually, when you are carrying multiples you DO need to eat more because you need to be taking in more nutrients than when you are not pregnant and you definitely need more protein. You don't news to eat double quantity buy make every bit count and go for nutrient rich.
I am not sure exactly how much I put on as I never weighed myself after 33 weeks. At that stage I had put on about 13kg. I had my girls at 38 weeks and I am guessing it would've been maybe 5kg more. While I think I actually lost weight off my body in those final weeks when eating got so hard I was retainig enormous amounts of fluid in my legs and feet by the end. I was all squishy and tree-trunk like from the hips down. It all came off quick, though and I was in my pre-pregnancy jeans 10 days after thy arrived and at my 6 week postnatal check I weighed the same on my GPs scales as I did at 6 weeks pregnant.
ETA - despite what the books say, everyone puts on weight differently in pregnancy including at different stages of pregnancy. In both my pregnancies I've put it on early and then slowed right down.
