A friend of my son travels by bus from near Hall to a school in the Inner South. It's a bit of a bus ride, however they are happy to do it. I think it takes about 40 mins to an hour by bus each way.
I like the fact I can be at the school within 5 mins

but I do understand wanting to travel for a school that will suit your children.

My 10 mo goes to day care two days a week in Woden and we live in Gungahlin so we're in the car for about 40 minutes each way. I"ve also done the drive with a preschooler (who now goes to school 5 minutes away from home). I find some days better than others - they get tired and grumpy on the bad days (these are the days I work so I'm tired and grumpy too by the end of the day - more so than usual

) so dinner is always simple but then we're rarely walking in the door before 5.30-6 - I would imagine your kids would be getting home from school earlier than that. And it depends on your kids and how old they are etc - I know my almost 5yo is still adjusting to being at school 5 days a week and a 40 minute bus ride at either end of the day would probably push her over the edge so to speak. But my 10yo would probably be fine cause he'd pull out a book and ready it.......
But I am curious as to how you can plan to not send them there every day ?

It really depends on the bus routes. We live about 15 mins drive from my stepson's school. But to have him bus there in the mornings is a nightmare. Because he is heading away from the city (Inner North out to Gungahlin) there are no direct buses at that time of day, so he would need to take two buses. And the buses don't go very frequently, so it would take him at least an hour.
But if you had a more direct bus route between your suburb and the school, it might be managable. Especially if you knew it was only for a short time, until your lease was up and you could move closer.

My kids go to childcare/school at Belconnen East and my DH works there too and to drive from our house in Kambah takes about 17 minutes (15 mins minimum, 20 mins max). He has taken the bus to work a few times: takes less than an hour I think. You could try the xpresso routes which bypass interchanging at civic but they may not link up too well...

when I was a kid I had to move in with my dad in Evatt but wanted to keep going to McKillop in Wanniassa. It was HORRIBLE having to catch 3 buses each way and it took my like an hour and a half to get to and from school. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are going to drive them or at least drop them at belconnen interchange.
If there is a direct bus that would be ok but otherwise having to catch 2-3 buses each was would be too much.

If they could catch a direct bus, then maybe. There would be no way i would let a 5 and 8 year old hang around the interchange!

thanks everyone. i will look into what buses go there and how many. i dont want my kids changing buses or waiting at the interchange.
