I must admit I raised my eyebrows when I read this name in last Saturdays paper (in WA). Sorry if it's you, but you can't name your child this and not ever expect people to comment.

I quite like Mira as a name. Cle' I could take or leave. Together (as in Miracle) is totally naff I think, but not ultimately hideous as the child can just call herself Mira if she chooses, so there is an 'out', so to speak.

Why the accent on the e? I want to pronounce it mira-clay with the accent. I don't know why, I know nothing about accents and what they do to a letter or even if that is what they are called. But I still want to pronounce it Mira-clay

I wonder how they want it pronounced. It reads (similar to) 'mira-clay' to me?

I would pronounce it Mira clay as well. Obviously the parents are hoping for a career in showbusiness.
A few months ago in the daily terror I saw the name Chisel.

You're right. The accent turns the e into an 'ay' sound. So it should be pronounced Mira-clay. But I wonder if the parents realise that or they're just abusing diacritic marks for the sake of being uneek.

Hmm, I suppose the parents have an emotive connection (their miracle baby?), but I can almost guarantee that when she's a teenager she'll insist on being known only as Mira and NOTHING ELSE!!
For what its worth, I heard a child's name being called out a few days ago, Shardonae (yes, I asked how it was spelled) and all I could think of was having a glass of wine!
To each their own...but I'm glad I have an ordinary name!
That's my daughter, you b**ch.

Weird (or is it wierd? Never know how to spell that word!)
Even miracle is a better name than "mirraclay"
I actually love the name Mira. Maybe she can drop the clé when she's old enough to realise her name is so terrible

I think you've got it there, once again, random changes to be 'spesh-al' with no inkling that the pronunciation changes with it. Sigh.

Of course he's not serious.
I know a little girl called Miracle, it was very hard to keep a straight face when her grandmother was telling me her name.
For the love of all things sane, if you are ever going to inflict a name like that on your kid, then you need to spell it correctly!

I think the latter is the case. Zero understanding about what an acute accent (and most likely every other diacritic mark) actually means and how it changes the letter.
I actually wish we used them more, they can help a lot with particular pronunciations. Rather than adding extra letters or totally butchering names, the use and understanding of diacritic marks can actually help people achieve the pronunciation they are after. If you're going to change the spelling of a name, better an appropriate accent than a few extra 'y's and the like.

\
But wasn't it the case that a while back you couldn't actually register a name in AUS with an accent of any sort? I vaguely remember hearing something about that.
If we were taught about them in primary/high school it might actually help people when they encounter foreign names and have no idea how they are pronounced, and cannot get their heads around it when they hear it (Welsh/Gaelic names for example).

A girlfriend of mine has a little sister who named her daughter Miracle after falling pregnant during a one-night-stand. Not entriely a 'Miracle'. Perhaps "Phorgotte De'Pill" would have been more appropriate.

It's actually a common name, or nick-name, in Russia, Hungary and other parts of Eastern Europe. Of course that doesn't mean you have to like it! Just wanted to point out it's a real name and not one of the Mira-cle variety!

I know a girl named Mira and a girl named Miracle. But Mira-cle? Hmmm.
The Miracle I know is in my son's class at school. It's amazing how the name is just pretty normal now, and it's by no means the oddest name there.
