Hi all,

Need a few suggestions.

We have a long dutch surname 3 words, 4 syllables, 11 letters!

What ideas do you all have for a boys first names?

!st bub so we don't need to consider other siblings names.

Personally I do not favour very modern out-there names, but I am happy to hear any suggestions.

I agree with Mocha coffee. Something short to balance out the long name. Any ideas?

I also agree that a one syllable name would work well with a long surname like Van Der Magenwagen or whatever!

What about:

Kai/Kaj
Charles
Blake
Finn/Flynn
James
Sean
Max
Jude
Mark
Seth
Jake
Joel
Troy
Quinn
Carl/Karl
Dean
Drew
Luke
Miles
Sam
Rhys/Reese

Good luck!

Yep, we have the long dutch surname too. For a boy I always liked Ben. Of course my sister then married a Ben, so we were thinking Toby, Tim, or Lucas.

My top 3 short boys names in order:

I have Daniel Thomas Anthony and Henry James Mark.
And I have a 12 letter 5 syllable Sri Lankan surname and they work beautifully.
Based on their first names and all the boys names we were looking at, 2 syllable names work fine. I actually found 1 syllable names to be too short and harsh when you actually used them in conjunction with the surname and said it out loud many times. A long surname almost needs a slightly more substantial first name in order for it to flow properly. I know for example if I try using Mark with my surname, while it is fine, it just isn't significant enough. Whereas if I try Anthony with our surname which has the 3 syllables it sounds far better. And this is probably proved by the name Anthony being used for the last 4 generations of men in my husbands fathers family.
Yes, I have thought about this.

THe guys I know with long, dutch surnames are ...

Neil
Gil
Christiaan
Travis
Ryan
Ronan
Toby

All seem to work well with the longer surname.

We have a long, hyphenated surname (13 letters) and our sons are Daniel and Sam (deceased). Their male relatives with the same surname are Brett, Kyle, Ross, Paul, Andrew, Mark, Dion and Scott.

We have a long Greek surname (well the kids do, I kept my short Greek maiden name). OHs surname has 13 letters/6 syllables.

I have one of each. DD's christian name is long as well (10 letters). Too long infact & together with her middle name (5 letters) it didn't bloody fit on her birth registration form properly.
She also requires her own Medicare card cause she doesn't fit on mine!
So we shortened it & gave her a nick name.

DS has a shorter name, it makes it so much easier, balances out so to speak.

Wow! You guys are amazing, thanks to everyone who put some suggestions in.

So far the front runner for me is Ryan - although I noticed it didn't appear too many times.

DH likes Ethan - I like it, but I am not 100% sold on it at this stage.

Last night I was watching a re-run of the Mentalist and they had a character Noah which I also think is really nice; but DH is not so keen.

Glad we have a bit longer to nut it out.

Any further suggestions are much appreciated.
