I just wanted to hear from any other mums whos twins are lying across there belly . My twin girls 24 weeks are laying across my belly & have been since my very first ultrasound . Both heads are to the right of my belly & when I have an ultrasound they use the funny term , these two are in bunk beds !! 2 babies exact same position !! I am worried about the babies having enough room as soon ( well already at times) there feels like there is none !! Will they turn soon ?? Or may I be looking at a c -section ?? Thanks Mumtomany !!!

Hi Mumtomany,

Firstly will warn you this may be a bit long!
I am certainly no expert in this field but my second twin was lying transverse from about 28 weeks on, while my first twin was heads down. Twin 2 (Scarlett) didn't turn heads down but I had stated in my birth plan that I would like a scan when I went into labour to see what position she was in to determine whether a vaginal birth was possible as I *really* didn't want a c-section if I could avoid it. So I went into labour naturally one night, went to the hospital and had my scan, she was still transverse so I opted for the c-section. I was prepped for a c-section, got to the Operating theatre and I just HAD to push, 6 pushes later there was Twin 1! They then managed to externally turn Twin 2 so she was heads down, but she refused to go down the birth canal so they went back to the idea of a c-section being that we were in theatre anyhow and it had been alomst 30 minutes since Twin 1 was born. Suddenly I needed to push again and she came along just fine exactly 30 minutes after her brother.
I think it goes that if Twin 1 is in a "favourable" position then they can turn the second twin after the first is born (this doesn't always work but I was happy to try it and it didn't hurt me or distress the baby at all)
I think with twins it is always best to be prepared mentally and emotionally for a c-section but also don't be afraid to make your requirements known so that other options can be tried first if possible.
Your twins still have time to turn even if you don't think there is room, they will make it!

Mumtomany,
I have found that for my last 3 ultrasounds (26-30 weeks) that they have changed positions, so I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. Up until then they were always in the same position. I feel like there isn't much room either, but one always seems to have turned around!
My obstetrician seems to think that they'll keep changing up until week 34ish, so I'm trying not to think about it until then!

Heres some hope for you! I had very big twins born at 38w5days-elective csection (7lb 6 oz and 7lb 10 oz) The largest turned from head down to breech at 38weeks so it can be done!

Hi there!

I too come with a little reassurance.....At all of our scans recently our babies have been in all different positions. 2 weeks ago they were both head down and engaged! Last week they are both lying transverse and heads to the right and little kicking legs to the left!

My ob is not at all worried about this at this stage - but has encouaged me to get down on all fours for at least a few minutes a day and that will help the babies to turn.

I hope this makes some sense to you, I just feel silly doing it, but if it helps than its worth it! LOL

Stay well and hope you are relaxing!

Hi Mumtomany.

My twins at 28 weeks plus at a scan yesterday, were round a different way from the last scan. I was also told they would still turn a fair bit until about 34-35 weeks, so I'm not worrying too much yet original.gif

Take care

I agree with everyone else. My twins changed positions about 2 days before they were born, they changed to both being breech.

My twin 1 was always head down and my twin 2 was up and down like a yo-yo...because of a complicated pregnancy, I had scans weekly (sometimes more towards the end) and the doctors used to laugh at how twin 2 would always be in a different position than the last time. I went to 37wks and the day before I'd had a scan telling me that twin 2 was breech but turning into the head down position (twin 1 was still down). The next day I had my c-section and twin 1 came first (obviously) but then twin 2 decided not to continue his journey for head down and went back the other way - he was pulled out breech. My twins were 6lb12 and 5lb11 and I still remember feeling twin 2 move on a regular basis up until a few days before my c-section. You still have plenty of time.

Lotsa hugs,
xx Megsy
