Hi all!
Just curious.... how did you Mums of multiples out that you were carrying more than just one baby while pg? And at what stage of the pgcy? Did any of you instictively feel that you would have twins/triplets/quads?

Sorry for being a nosey parker....

TIA!

We found out at 6 weeks 4 days. We were having a scan to see if there was ONE baby, the Dr thought we weren't going to even have one at the end. SO it was a huge shock to see 2 little heartbeats! A big shock, but still the best surprise too.

I found out at 12.6weeks. I'd just returned from a holiday in Port Douglas with my Mum when I started getting sharp pains on my left side. Dr thought it was a cyst so sent me for an ultrasound & TWINS instead.

Never dreamed of having twins. My SIL lost twins 8yrs earlier so I had no inkling to have twins. When the Dr suggested a cyst, my mind went Twins for all of 1 second but other than that, no insticts that I'd have them.

As we were doing IVF, we had a blood test at 4 weeks and the nurse said the HCG was very high, giving us an increased chance of twins. We had more blood tests each week until 8 weeks when we had a scan that confirmed it. Each blood test the HCG levels shot up higher, so it was pretty certain. I was also much sicker than with my first pregnancy.

Best of luck

Hi Annabel

We found out at an ultrasound at 9 and 1/2 weeks. I was actually in hospital with a drip in my hand due to a stomach bug I had picked up o/s and not eating due to the nausea that it and the pregnancy was creating. I was also having severe abdominal pains (still there 7 weeks later!!) so they gave me an ultrasound to check for gallstones and the sonographer said, "Let's do one on the baby as well just to check all is ok". She asked me if I had had an ultrasound before and I said yes, my gyno did one on me 2 weeks earlier at 7 and 1/2 weeks after I got bcak from o/s. She then said "so you know there's two here don't you." I said "No!" and then tried to concentrate on her other questions while my brain was whirling! She said that is why gyno's and ob's shouldn't do ultrasounds, that they should leave it to the professionals! but I think sometimes it is a bit too early to tell.

I had no idea prior to this, I had no instinctive feeling but I have heard that some women do.

Hi,

I didn't find out that I was having twins until I was 19weeks pregnant. Had absolutely no instinct or feeling that it might be twins. I wasn't very big and didn't feel too bad in the first trimester so it was a huge shock when we saw two little heads on the ultrasound!!

Hi there,

I had my booking in appt at 12 weeks. I was convinced that something was wrong with the baby ( I had had a m/c 5 weeks prior to getting pg that time so was very paranoid), I had had no morning sickness at all, and just didn't "feel" pregnant. The only thing that made me think I was still pregnant was when my top jeans button popped across the bathroom at just 8 weeks, followed by the second button at 12 weeks along. I just put it down to getting bigger faster with a second pregnancy.
At my appt I denied knowing my dates for sure as I really wanted an u/s to check the baby, the nurse hadn't been able to find a heart beat with a doppler which only made me more paranoid so I was amazed to see two little ones up on the screen at the ultrasound! Dh and I just looked at each for 3 days and grinned and giggled like a couple of school kids!
We have no history of twins in the family and no fertility drugs etc were used so it really did come out of left field for us!

Hi there,
I found out at 12 weeks when I had an ultrasound. My husband wasn't with me and the girl doing the scan just blurted out 'oh, there are 2. Thats the second lot of twins for the day!' I was in shock. I had no idea or expectation of twins and I just couldn't get my head around it. I lay there and laughed and laughed. A lot of women say to me that they thought that they were going to have twins but didnt. For me, I never would have thought of having twins.
Cheers from Wendy

[color=Blue]We did ICSI and I had high HCG levels so I knew there was a chance of twins, but I got the shock of my life at my scan (6 wks 5days) to see triplets!!

We lost one of the triplets before the 12 week mark, but I went on to deliver 2 healthy boys just before 37 weeks! original.gif original.gif

Hi AnabelMC - Hmmmm just curious hey, I remember posting a similar question "for a friend" about the levels but really it was for little frightened me! LMAO.....

We found out at 4 weeks that we were pregnant and it was confirmed every 2 days with a blood test to determine the amount of HCG in the blood. My Gyno/Ob bet me $100 it was twins if not triplets!! The levels continued to rise on up and we saw 2 embyonic sac's at 5 weeks and then one confirmed heart beat at 5.5 and the other at 6 weeks.....very long few days that was!

now at 24.3 weeks and all going really well

Wishing you and your family all the best and for a safe and happy Christmas/New Year....

We had our first OB appointment at 11 weeks and as I had argued with our GP about dates, had trouble getting a BFP and had had some spotting and low BP problems our OB wanted to do a quick scan to confirm things. I was sure he was going to say that there was something wrong, that I wasn't pregnant after all or something else horrible.

When I hopped up on the table I was petrified and he seemed to take forever looking around and not saying anything... I couldn't see anything but blobs on the screen (later DH swore he could see heartbeats but I don't believe him!) and I took the long silence to mean something was wrong. I nearly died when our OB casually said "ok there are two maybe three babies".

I had not even considered for a second that I could have twins and thought at first he was joking but nope.. he was deadly serious... and 5 days later when we went for an internal scan to confirm how many babies and if there were a membrane between them I still didn't believe it though this time I could clearly see it. Come to think of it the girls are a year old and I STILL can't quite get my head around the fact that I have twins.... so nope no inkling here!

We found out at 7 1/2 weeks but I remember being really nervous waiting to see the Dr as I thought that maybe I wasn't pregnant anymore and the scan would tell me that. But got the shock of my life the Dr didn't have to say anything he just said wait a minute and I said my god it's twins isn;t it.

When I was 5 weeks my son then 5 told me I was having more than one baby. I laughed and said no way but he was right he actually told me there was three.

Thank you so much everyone for sharing your wonderful experiences with me. original.gif Seems that most Mums don't instinctively know when they are pg with twins... makes sense... I remember hearing yrs ago that in the "olden" days most women didn't find out that they were having twins until they gave birth! How would THAT be for a shock! LOL!

Gotta say, sometimes I think that children know more about what's what than we do! Maybe they're closer to God. My DS has been insisting that he has another sister coming soon - even before I found out that I'm preggers! (Of course he had no way of knowing that Mummy and Daddy were TTC!) We'll see....

You caught me out LOL! I was asking because I thought maybe. My sister who had twins a few yrs ago actually put the idea in my head. I was telling her that I got my BFP on day 17 of my cycle (I O early on about day 9 or 10 though, so maybe not so freaky??) and that I'm feeling sick already, and when I said to her "isn't that strange?" she replied with a mischievous grin "not if you're having twins!" I wouldn't have ordinarily paid any attention, but twins run VERY strongly in our family. My Mum's Dad was a fraternal twin and so were 8 (4 sets of twins) of her cousins. My DH's brothers are also fraternal twins.

Thanks again everyone!! I loved reading your stories!
