DP and I are in discussions about what name to choose for our baby girl. He is Samoan and wants to call her Taemane. How would you pronounce it just by looking at the way it is spelt?

Tah-mah-nee? (I have come across a fair few Siones from Samoa and that was pronounced See-Oh-nee).

Taya-mane? Maybe a bit too hard to pronounce for most people though and I think you'd spend a lot of time pronouncing it and spelling it for people.

I'm not familiar with that language so I don't know if they'd pronounce the end E or not. Either Tay-mayne or Tay-mah-nee. Or some languages would pronounce the A and the E in the beginning syllable so Ta-eh-mah-nee. Yes it would be a hard one to read off paper. Maybe keep it as a mn?

I would look at it and mumble teh-meh-neh and hope no-one noticed.

Thanks for the replies!
DP pronounces it something like Tay-mun-eh if that makes sense? But the English translation would be Tay-mar-nee.
If I saw it and didn't know, I'd probably say it Tay-main and having people say it incorrectly and then having to explain how to pronounce is annoying (which is what I have to do with my son's name). Although I'm glad I posted this topic now as quite a few have said they would pronounce it Tay-mar-nee which puts my mind at rest a little bit as DP has his heart set on the name.

It might just take a bit of education to get people around you pronouncing it correctly. Certainly no odder than some of those Irish names (such as Siobhan, Niamh etc) where spelling and pronunciation seem poles apart to an English speaker. When my kids went to school in inner city Sydney, there were all sorts of names and the kids just adjusted (they would be the ones correcting the adults pronunciation).
I wonder if there is a short form that could be used for everyday and/or for occasions where she can't be bothered spelling out/explaining her name.
I imagine it sounds quite pretty when it is pronounced properly.

I think it is beautiful!
There are always going to be names that need to be spelled out or corrected. Even english - western names.
And the fact it is part of your DH's history is lovely...
