Was flicking through Foxtel channels and wondered what on earth my parents were thinking when they used to let me watch shows like George and Mildred and The Benny Hill Show. Not to mention, how was I even entertained by them. Other than Wonderful World of Disney, Skippy, Flipper and Simon Townsends Wonder World, I can't remember many TV shows that I watched that were not full of adult humour. Some of it is tame compared to what is on these days, but there is no way my kids would be even vaguely interested in George and Mildred or Are You Being Served, even Kingswood Country? They would think I had gone mad if I made them sit down in front of some of the stuff we used to watch at their age. Was it because there was nothing else to do that we sat through these shows?
I wish they would bring back the Curiosity Show though, my kids would happily watch that.

I remember when we'd have dinner at my nan's we'd eat as fast as we could so that us kids could nick off into the lounge room and watch ..... "Dad's Army".
Oh my.... what a sad childhood. For some reasom we'd only watch it at her house (and if we'd eaten fast enough we'd see a bit of Benny Hill - too naughty to watch at our house).

I think I went through a Sons and Daughters/Country Practice phase in early Primary. I remember being allowed to stay up on Monday and Tuesday until 8.30 to watch ACP.
The movie Halloween. Can't believe I was allowed to watch that.

Hey Dad.
We watched it as a family for a few years. I saw it as a repeat a few years back and hated it. The Dad character seemed very mean and flippant.
And of course now the scandal surrounding the actor that played the Dad as well.

I was the youngest of my sibilings by quite some years so I watched whatever was on; MASH was a fave
Movies: I remember watching Silence of the Lambs at age 8

, the Porky films, and a whole host of films with adult content which often I didn't understand but still enjoyed.
I was also the only 2nd grader who was into Pink Floyd, Dire Straits and INXS thanks to my brothers

Seriously? At 4? I still can't watch them now without being terrified for weeks.
I was watching the Goodies the other day. I never realised how adult the content was and how racist some of the humour is. Completely went over my head as a kid.

Me too! Although it was at a sleepover party so maybe Mum wouldn't have let me watch it otherwise. But I do find it funny that a parent allowed 8 year olds to watch that ...
Funnily enough the same thing happened at that girls house the next year at a sleep over when we watched that clown movie IT (aged 9). Freaked me out for weeks!

I used to watch the Kenny Everett show, but for the life of me cannot remember anything about it.
I let my kids watch The Goodies when it comes on lol. but usually they're stuck on Nick Kids or the Disney channel *sigh*.

I'm another 1978 baby who was right there with you! Except my ACP phase went on a lot longer

. In '97-'98 when I was living on campus at uni there were a group of us who'd gather in the TV room at 9am and watch ACP reruns rather than go to class!
I enjoyed Leave it to Beaver as a kid despite it already being about 30 years old. My absolute favourite show though was Young Talent Time.

I was watching the Incredible Hulk and Dr. Who when I was young (younger than 10) - they terrified me and there's no way I'd let my DD watch them at the same age! I also watched the Exorcist and The Omen Trilogy when I was about 10 - no idea what my parents were thinking - too many Pimms in the evening?

Yes!!! I was the same! Poor Molly....

I also went through a GP phase too.
I loved Are You Being Served, Fawlty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances and even shows like On The Buses and The Carry On series. I still have some of them on DVD now! The type of humor used in those you just can't get away with now. Also, a lot of those shows were English - very different humor the American sitcoms that flood the TV now days.
Not so much shows, but I remember watching Gremlins and Chucky when I was about seven... and cannot believe my parents allowed it!

We watched a lot of 'Brit' shows and I cannot believe a) we were allowed to and b) that we found them funny.
Benny Hill
Bless this House
On The Buses
Love thy Neighbour
Mind your Language
just a few I can think of off the top of my head.
course, there were the ones I still enjoy like All Creatures Great and Small and The Goode life.
Oh, and we were allowed to watch 'Not the Nine O'Clock News' and Kenny Everett. What I remember most about KE and what I found hilarious beyond belief back then was when he 'did' a celeb. Like he'd be Rod Stewart and his nose would get bigger and bigger until he was just a giant nose.
Also watched all the goodies like Love Boat and Bionic Woman...

I feel so young... lol. I think majority of hte shows mentioned were on before I was born...
I remember watching Melrose Place when I was quite young though. It started in 1992 when I was 6, and I remember watching those first few episodes on TV.
I think we mostly watched age-inappropriate films though instead of TV shows. We had strict bedtimes, so usually missed out on shows meant for older viewers.

I am in your boat, some of the shows mentioned I have never heard of.
I remember watching Melrose Place when I was still little, I also saw Nightmare on Elm st while at a family friends place and I was scared for ages

, I still dream of my arms breaking off (have never seen the movie since either). I am sure there are many more innapropraite things I have seen as a kid. I am not messed up as a result of it though. Although some people might object to that.

I used to love horror films from an early age.

I would stay up really late to watch Chances
Melrose Place
ACP
Rocky Horror I was not allowed to watch until I was 13 but my kids love it (my 8 year old giggled at the man wearing girls knickers)
There was a show on ABC that had a big guy and a smaller guy and the big guy was an alien. I was really politically incorrect and was in the 80's. It was Australian but I have no idea what it was.
My kids would love YTT
I was watching Horror movies from a young age and my kids aren't bothered by them either (my older boys)

My kids would love YTT too. It's such a shame DD isn't a bit older so we would let her watch Glee.
Shows that I watched that I wouldn't let my kids watch now - Neighbours & Home and Away!!
I own the big box set of MASH but won't let the kids watch it yet.
The Young Ones!! I can't believe no one has mentioned it yet. Although there are enough bum and fart jokes to keep any 5 year old boy entertained for hours!

All the British shows mentioned.
Also most of the James Bond movies in primary school, Carry on movies.

XTRO. I remember begging to watch it as some friends at school had seen it. My grandparents hired it out. Needless to say my brother and I (11 and 7) didnt get to watch it all lol.. What on earth my gps were thinking I have no idea!'

Not a TV show, but you got me thinking, when my brother and I were little (me maybe 5, him 12), we played these computer games night and day - one was called Wolfenstein. God we loved it, but it was a brutally violent game about Nazi Germany! My mum was an otherwise fabulous mum, what the bloody hell was she thinking?? Not that I think it ever did any harm, I don't have violent tendencies, but if I did, I'm pretty sure this game would have stirred something up in me! I wouldn't let DD near it in a pink fit.

i used to watch all those old British comedies - watching them as an adult now I realise so much of the adult humour went way over my head. I just laughed at the basics or whenever my mum cracked up. I used to sneak out of bed to watch the Young Ones. I was devasted when I was not allowed to watch Footloose on TV and when I got to school the next day so many of my classmates had seen it. lol I have NO IDEA why I wasn't allowed to watch it. My brother wasn't allowed to play Dungeons and Dragons in case he became a murderer or something.

My kids (7 and 10) love The Goodies - all the slapstick is right up their alley. Some of the worst innuendo was edited for the 6pm timeslot in my childhood, so occasionally they see something I wasn't expecting!

I remember having nightmares after watching Lost in Space! And I was freaked out when The Amityville Horror people were interviewed on The Don Lane Show.
The show I watched that was pretty adult was SOAP. It was brilliant. I was about 11, and would sneak in the loungeroom to watch it alone.
As a family we used to watch Blankety Blanks after dinner. How classy was that?!
And we would watch all the Bill Collins Golden Oldie movies - West Side Story, Carousel, Oklahoma!, film noir, and no commentary from parents - no discussion. I wouldn't let my kids watch them (aged 6, 8, 10), but frankly, they wouldn't be interested.
They have enjoyed watching some old series on Go! Bewitched, Partridge Family, Green Acres.
