Hi there,
Still going through boy-name hell...we could have wasted hours on this if it ends up being a girl, lol !
Anyway, DH this morning is saying what about Spencer for a boy?. I'm not sure....does this sound like one of the 'trendy' names of the moment (ie, my preference is for fairly standard name, but i'm sure we've now been through EVERYTHING five times now).
Any other suggestions, i'm desperate !
cheers

I don't like it, sorry. It could grow on me though as I knew a really cute Andrew Spencer, and DH has cousin with a son called Spencer John.
Spencer Edward sounds really cute. I love the name Edward

Spencer is a fine name, I really like it, however you're right in thinking it has a bit of a 'trendy' reputation. For some reason, I get really put off by a name, no matter how much I like it, if it is overused to buggery! For instance, girls names Ella, Isabella, Olivia and boys names Jack, Lachlan, Joshua - they are all beautiful names but so common now. Imagine the classroom situation!
Spencer is not that overused though... good luck in deciding...

Spencer Edward is a strong, almost "royal" sounding name. Maybe I'm getting that from Dianna Spencer, Prince Edward... I'm rambling. He'd get Spence for short. It's not really my style, but I like the fact that it's not too popular.

I would have voted yes in 2004, and I'm voting yes in 2010. It's a nice, strong, not overly popular name.
It helps that I only know two Spencers -- one who is a sweetheart of a grown man & the other is Vanessa71's beautiful son (don't know him in real life, but I"know" him from EB).

Spencer is one of my favourite Englishy-type names. I do not regard it as trendy. I think Spencer Tracy if anything. I know only one Spencer personally- late 30's.
Names I like which to me have a similar feel include:
Cormac
Lincoln
Fabian
Fletcher
Rennie
Ronan
But if I were you I would keep Spencer in strong consideration.

The little boy on the left of my sig is a Spencer. I am yet to meet one in real life. I am sure eventually there wil be others the same age as him withe the same name but there are not many names that wont happen to.
I don't think there will be multiples of the name in his class. There may be a few Jacksons
(and the plethora of funky spellings done to make it uneek) and a few Thomas and Lachlans but all are nice sounding names.
I have only encountered others with the name Spencer here on EB and then only noticed them after mine was born!
We also chose it as I don't mind the NN Spence. Many shortened "australianised" versions of lovely names are horrid

It's kinda growing on me. Douglas, not so much.
I would have liked Dexter at some time, but had it not been for that serial killer show of the same name. I have no clue who Spencer Pratt is, the criminal minds one, I like though.
Marcus, too similar to my brothers name.
Thanks for the feedback.

Can I ask what you ended up naming your son?
aussieatheart
07/11/2010, 08:08 PM
He is Lachlan, one of the most common names of 2008. I've loved Lachlan for many, many years and always wanted it for a boys name. DH wasn't sure of Lachlan as a name as we have friends with a son who is 4 years older and an adult friend with the name. Funnily enough our adult friend jokes about us naming Lachlan after him, his wife is due to have their 1st son tomorrow, so my DH has spoken about appropriate pay back!
Front runners on our list were- Lachlan, Aiden and Owen. I suggested Spencer but obviously that did not go further than a suggestion. DH really wanted Owen but our surname also starts with an O and it simply would not have worked. If we have another boy he will be Aiden.
I was only thinking to myself the other day, "lucky I love the name Lachlan sooooo much as I have had to call it about 25 times a day for a week (terrible 2s)"
Kitty Fantastico
07/11/2010, 08:15 PM
My hubby doesn't mind Aiden. He also suggested Lachlan. But to be honest, nothing against the name, but I've been put off by it's popularity.
For years we thought that we would name any future son Caleb, but when we found out we were having a boy, and realising it's popularity. It got scrapped quickly.

Spencer is what we called DS and while it wasn't my absolute favourite boys name, I do really like it. DH took a bit of convincing, but I think Spencer Tracy and the fact that Winston Churchill's middle name was Spencer got it over the line.
I have never watched The Hills, so I don't know Spencer Pratt.
It is currently out of the top 100 boys names (for Victoria at least), so not popular, but DD has a friend with a brother called Spencer who would be 7 or 8, so we do know one other.

I have never been a real fan of Spencer, although it does seem to be increasingly popular. I guess my first thought was the garment of clothing referred to as a spencer, and well Spencer Pratt really does some up my initial thoughts of the name.
However - have met the gorgeous little man in the signature above this post and he is delightful. It has grown on me a bit since knowing Vanessa, but isn't my style, as my children's names aren't hers

I'm so undecided on this name. On the postive side, you have Spencer Tracy as a namesake (very cool), and then there's the very cute Spencers above (Vanessa and DaisyGoat, they are both
gorgeous.)On the neutral side, there's a connection to the royal title, which may or may not be a good thing. I've been known to read glossy mags about British castles

(yes, I'm a dork), and I like Althorp and Charles (Diana's brother) but his name is Charles though isn't it? Spencer's his title.
On the negative side, there's Frank Spencer and underwear, and it's a bit surnamey for my tastes.
Sorry, I'm no help.

The title Diana's brother Charles has is Earl Spencer. Spencer is not a title it's their surname.

I like the name Spencer. Though I won't use it myself. But if you really love it as long your other half is OK with it... Just go with it. It's not a horrible name at all. It's a cute name for little person and spunky name for an adult.

As much as I

Vanessa and probably 90% of the time agree with her on names, Spencer has never been a favourite of mine, I think because of Diana and family I think of it more as a last name than a first name. It's not that I dislike it, I just don't particularly love it.

It's funny Blondie, I like it despite the Diana connection, but I think it's one of those names that I just always liked. I am not big on surnames as first names (as you probably know

), but as I heard it in Spencer Tracy's name first it became a first name for me, same with Elliot.
I can't imagine my little Spencer being called anything else now and it is a better name than Philip.
