I really love the name Lucia pronounced loo-SEE-ah. But how do most people pronounce it, is it Loo-SEE-ah, Loo-sha, or Loo-chi-ah? I need 100 replies to be convinced of what the general thoughts are...
Thanks so much for your help.
Wow! I didn't expect to get 100 replies so quickly, thank-you so much everyone. I have tallied up the replies and it ended up at
Loo-CHI-ah 65%
Loo-SEE-ah 29%
Loo-sha 5%
Loo-TSI-ah 1%
It really surprised me that a few people seemed to only know about the Italian version Loo-CHI-ah. Also surprising that some people assume the Italian pronunciation, when they know that there are several versions of the name. I love the softer Spanish version Loo-SEE-ah, just sounds so much prettier to me, but am a bit put off by the fact that most people do say Loo-CHI-ah. Lucy would be simpler, but that's probably why I like Lucia better as it is not as common and a bit exotic sounding! Still, 29% is a pretty good result and I guess she will only have to correct them the first time. For such a gorgeous name it may be worth it???
Thanks again.

It depends what it is followed by. If followed by an 'e' or 'i' then yes. If followed by an 'a', 'o' or 'h', then it's a hard sound.

It's an Italian name and the correct pronunciation is with a CH sound (like church). TBH I don't know what spelling you'd have to use in order for it to be pronounced like Lucy... Maybe Lusia or Lussia? Although they might get the SH sound. If you want to go for something a little unusual then your daughter will get used to correcting people - if you call her Lucia and she has to correct people, well, she'll only have to do it the first time!!
Actually, my cousin called her daughter Luchia so that it would be pronounced with the CH instead of the S sound; I'm a bit of a purist though so I look at that spelling and want to say Lookhia!!

Loo-CHEE-ah, the Italian way is the way I pronounce it...but as you can see from behindthename, there are four different "proper" pronunciations:

I prefer it pronounced 'Loo-see-ah' which is the more Latin American (some say Spanish also) pronunciation. The Italian pronunciation is the '-ch' sound.
Either is valid though, if you prefer it with a soft 's' sound it wouldn't take much effort to correct people who were saying with a 'ch'.
It's a lovely name, worth using even if some people might use the different pronunciation initially.

I prefer LuCEEah, but that's because I've lived in Latin America. But the Italian pronunciation LuCHEEah is equally valid (and by the replies, more common). Unfortunately this confusion puts me off this name a bit, although I love it.
I agree though with others that you can use either pronunciation, you'll just be correcting people occasionally.
