I read:
Southern Vamipre series (Charlaine Harris)
Rachel Morgan series (Kim Harrison)
Anita Blake series (Laurell K Hamilton) - but it turned into crap after a while
Queen Betsy series (MaryJanice Davidson)
Mercedes Thompson series (Patricia Briggs) - though this is more werewolf than vampire

Aquamama: They are addictive aren't they?
I think you will like the Demonica Series by Larissa Ione (5 books) or the Carpathian Dark Series by Christine Feehan (23? books). Very similar in structure with HOT storylines.
Totally addictive! Love that they are more "adult" while at the same time fantastic story lines. I LOVE deep character storylines. I was scared after I started reading the second one because I was missing the first characters but then understood how she was going to write the series and enjoyed how it comes together.
Thanks for the recommendations

I've just finished
Let the right one in (John Ajvide Lindqvist)
I loved it!!!

It's actually the first vampire book I've read.
I really recommend it - it was very well written (and translated into English). Once I started I just couldn't put it down (love when that happens!!!). Although it was quite confronting in some parts.
I'm about to start another book of his "Handling the Undead" which is about Zombies

Do you guys remember S E Hinton, author of "The Outsiders"? I stumbled across a new book of hers (adult, not teen fic) recently, called "Hawke's Harbour" which is vampire. Very interesting....

Patricia Briggs is great (though the comic version not so good) C E Murphy, jocelynn drake. keri arthur, kresley cole, kelley armstrong. there are heaps of fantastic authors in this catagory and it keeps getting larger and larger my local bookstore now just as one wall of vamp/supes stuff!

The Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger is so very funny and has vampires and werewolves galore! There's two books that I know of so far (Soulless and Changeless) - no scrap that, the third book came out in Sept! Whohoo! That's called Blameless.
The series is described as Buffy meets Jane Austen and it really is very funny with just enough sexiness to be nice but not overpowering.
*toddles off to Book Depository for the third book*

I just finished reading
The Last Vampire series by Christopher Pike. There are 6 books in the series but there are only 3 books so there are 2 books in a book
They are
The Last Vampire
Black Blood
Red Dice
Phantom
Evil Thirst
Creatures Of Forever. I absolutely loved them and i found that i couldn't put them down.
At the moment i am reading the
Night Watch Trilogy by Sergei LukyanenkoThere are 3 books
The Night Watch
The Day Watch
The Twilight Watch These have a lot of wizards, vampires, shape shifters in them as well and they are really long but i am really enjoying them
Another series that is fantastic is
The Circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts,
There are 3 books in that one and they are
Morrigan's Cross
Dance of the Gods
Valley of SilenceAm so glad that someone started this thread as i have been running out of books to read

I've got to throw in a mention for Salem's Lot by Stephen King.
No nice sexy vampires here. No "animals only" vampires. No "I'm so nice and sensitive vampires". These guys are hungry and they're vicious. And people stick stakes through their dastardly hearts. Not a swooning virgin fighting her urge to bed the sexy vampire in sight.

I love the hot and steamy books
I loooooooooooooved the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series am currently reading the latest one about John Matthew...
Can thoroughly recommend Lara Adrian - The Midnight Breed Series...
http://www.laraadrian.com/series.phpNot Vampire, but paranormal/fantasy...
My latest addiction is Scottish Lairds
The Highlander series by Karen Marie Moning, is swoonworthy :-) They are mystical, magically and totally alpha male

Bugger, net just ate my long post

Atm am reading Bloodsucking Fiends by Christopher Moore. Light read, good premise, am not sure I am in love with the authors writing style - seems too quick in parts and choppy.
Am eagerly awaiting my copy of "The Passage" by Justin Cronin (first book in an intended trilogy). Got rave reviews from NYT.
Also waiting for book 2 of the Peeps book.
Edited to say
Bloodsucking fiends turned to total crap. Don't waste your money.
Am reading book 2 of Peeps - called "Last Days" by Scott Westerfeld. Halfway through and loving it.
I do love sequels where it is not a linear composition involving the same characters, but new characters occupying the rough same time in space.
Still waiting for The Passage to arrive.
I have "The Historian" to read in the meantime (after last days).

I loved this book! It was totally awesome. Have you seen the Swedish film?
'Handling the Undead' is technically not about Zombies but Undead. Subtle difference LOL. I read Handling before Let and I really enjoyed Let the right one in more. I don't know why it could be because he really went back to Vampire basics ie not sexing them up
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Anna Rice series
Brian Lumley series (Necroscope,Vampire Earth, etc) - Very different take on the vampire mythos.
Not a fan of the Sookie books... I don't think they're very well written, and IMO the TV show is MUCH better.
Twilight is just terrible........ disgrace to vampire fiction.
Not a fan at all at the dime a dozen 'romantic vampire' novels doing the rounds. It's like trying to make a romantic novel about a serial killer. It just shouldn't work!

I have recently read Saltwater Vampire, it is a Australian novel and i found it very intriguing. Once you get past all the surfer lingo there is no romance in this novel just about a bunch of vampires wanting to destroy a town.

Some of my preferences:
Sunshine by Robin Mcinley
I really recommend someone else's suggestion of Let The Right One In by John Ajvide Linquist though this book is very confronting and very odd.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned:
Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost - which is a very sexy, adult series.
Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill - not quite as much sexing action but a great, and romantic storyline.
Touch The Dark by Karen Chance isn't quite as good as the HTTG of SGB but it's not bad. Just watch out for the info dumps.
Angel's Blood by Nalini Singh - technically about Angels who are more like vampires - it's complicated...
The following aren't vampire but centre around other supernatural beings and I think you'd really like them:
Dark Fever by Karen Marie Moning - incredible Urban Fantasy (don't be fooled by the sexy cover - there's not a lot of sex)
On The Edge by Ilona Andrews - Another incredible book about magic users.
Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews - this is part of the Kate Daniels series as opposed to The Edge Series. It centres around "shifters". The first book is okay and the others become progressively more badass and awesome.
Bitten by Kelley Armstrong - There are no words for how awesome this book is. Sexy, funny, heart-warming and action packed.
Moon Called by Patricia Briggs - Another novel based on the world of shifters more than vampires. Like Kate Daniels, I wasn't over the top about the first book but the others quickly made me fall in love.
I think the Demonica series already mentioned was a good rec if you're really into the erotica aspect.

Panda,
Let The Right One In is not at ALL your usual vampire novel.
Just a warning. There is no teen heartthrob, no 'evil' to be fought, no maidenly introspective female protagonist rescued from average life by a sparkling vampire.
It contains violence, blood, gender confusion, child molestation, weird characters and ambiguous morality.
The main character is a 14(?) year old boy who is incontinent and is brutally bullied at school.

Erm I would actually say that Let the right one is more of a Vampire novel than a lot of the other so-called Vampire novels around at the moment. Go back to the roots: Dracula is not a very nice person. He is a monster hell bent on getting to and using Mina Harker. That namby pampy Edward Cullen dude is not a vampire. Not by a very very long shot
