Full Version: At what age did your twins go longer than 4 hrs at night?

~Kathreen~
Tobias and Indigo are 7 weeks old today.... And I am feeling extremely tired today. So the question has crossed my mind... So I thought I would ask. Hope and sleep might be just around the corner lol.

Tobias is about 4.4kgs and Indigo is about 4kgs. They go 3-4 hrs during the day and 4 hours during the night. That's from the start of one feed...to the start of the next feed. By the time they are fed and I can actually get back in bed.. I might get 2 hours on a suckie night.. Up to nearly 3 hrs on a good night. If they feed quickly and I fall back to sleep straight away.

I think I am pretty lucky.. It was my Ob who put doubt in my mind the other day at my 6 week checkup. In the waiting room and people were cooing over the twins..out comes my Ob and the lady who was seeing her..with her 6 week old baby. My Ob says "aww the twins are here" and then says to the lady she was seeing " we won't tell Kathreen you are getting 7 hours sleep at night"

Surely they can sleep longer lol hands.gif

Hate to say this Kat but you may have a while to go yet. I know that there are people who have these children who "sleep through" but I haven't met any of them ( Oh one- but she forced her children to by CC and giving them water only at night time -so that doesn't count)

My two dropped the dream feed at about 6 months ( 10 pm) but still had a feed at 2am and 6am etc 4 hourly. So if I wanted more than 3hrs sleep I had to go to bed at 8pm!

I let the children decide and there was just nothing I could do about it.

My twins are 11 weeks, and are mostly sleeping 5-6 hours at night. They get a formula top at after their b/f at 10, then usually don't wake till 4 when they have a quick feed and ack to sleep for another 3-4 hours. It's bliss!! In saying that, it's nothing that we have done, they just worked it out for themsleves. And it's been about 4 weeks since they really stopped waking at 2, although they still have the odd night when they do. Even then, it's usually only one of them. I don't wake the other at that time.

Have you tried resettling without a feed? I always try that first especially if they wake a bit early. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But I know they CAN sleep longer, so I always give it a go first. Could you sqeeze in an extra feed before they settle for the night? I know you've got older kids so times at a premium!

I can't remember are you b/f?

Mine started sleeping from 12/1-6 when they were around 10 weeks old. One was probably still only around 3.5 kg then, the other would have been 4.5 - though the smaller one was the better sleeper usually. I stopped waking the second one to feed during the night around 8-9 weeks but they stayed so in-sync that I started again once they settled into a new pattern with the longer sleep.

I think it's a very individual thing though, my first didn't sleep through until over 10 months, my second was sleeping from 12-7 by 10 days (could have knocked me over with a feather when that happened).

I hope they start stretching out a bit for you soon. It's amazing how just an extra hour or two of sleep in a block can make you feel like a new woman.

Wow, what a dumb thing for that OB to say. Stupid OB.

From about 6 weeks my girls started to settle immediately after night feeds. I could literally feed them, wrap them, pop them back in their cot, and hightail it out of there back to bed. Of course it would usually take me another hour or so to get back to sleep myself but hey, at least I was in bed and not being yelled at by one newborn or another. They did 1 stretch of almost 6 hours between feeds once at 8 weeks and then at 11 weeks they suddenly went 7 hours. Prior to that it was always 3-4 hrly overnight, sometimes even less. After that first night of a long stretch though they never had that 3-4am feed again. They woke for the next couple of nights but I decided to try to resettle them first before feeding and they both went back to sleep again really quickly and easily. I always woke the other one when the first one woke for that feed so maybe one of them might have slept through earlier but I'll never know. They still had a 10pm/11pm feed initailly but dropped that too at 15 weeks (it was getting harder and harder to wake them for it and then they were not drinking much so decided to just test and see what happened if I didn't give it to them - nothing happened, they just kept sleeping) and were 7pm-7am babies for ages after that. Sometimes they still are now. laughing2.gif

As per DG, I went to bed super early when all the night feeds were going on. I was in bed by 8pm, would set my alarm for 10:45pm and get up for that late feed, then back to bed for whenever it was they woke, which could be anything from about 2:30am-4am (although 4am was a good one for them and usually it was shortly after 3am).

We had our first '8 hours' at 12 weeks old... but it was intermittent for a while after that. They probably started sleeping 10.30-6.30 ish (I would wake them for a feed at 10.30pm) at about 4.5months... then when I gave up the night feed (according to my sister I'd let it go on way too long rolleyes.gif ) they slept probably 7-3ish, then 3-7ish... That was from about 9 months ... they didn't really sleep 7pm-7am until they were 2+ ... even now (at nearly 6) I'll have at least one up with a bad dream or a wet bed every second night I reckon... But four hourly... probably stopped at about 4-5months...

Disclaimer is that I did go to 'sleep school' for a residential stay at 9 weeks though... and used controlled comforting (not controlled crying as they were so young!).

im pretty sure we were getting 5hrs or so by 8wks and by 11wks they were sleeping straight through the night from about 8pm to 6am (my ds1 was the same and sleeping through by 13wks). i did have some issues with Anna cat napping for about a week during the day, but i was able to sort it out quiet easily.

each kid is different though, i know some that slept through from day dot, some that still dont sleep through at a year old.

I dont get this now at 3.5 years! It has only been the last few months that they sleep from 7pm to about 4am

My 2 both slept from 7pm til 5am at 14 weeks on the dot. They were 5 weeks early, so 9 weeks corrected if that means anything. Both bottle fed from birth. By sleeping through I mean with out a feed, I didn't count dummy calls and re-wraps etc.

We also went to Sleep School at 9 weeks to establish twin feeding/sleeping routine

Oh Im in the bunch who has nighttime wakers! Our boys are 7 months now and are little piggies and still want food every 4hours [they are 10kg each]. I try to resettle-- usually try for about 10 mins. some nights are shockers [like last night... i think i need to invest in some of those clear-your-eyes- eye drops!] with dummy spits/escaping blankets... we have tried all sorts[larger bottles during day/altering feed times during day/solids etc]to get the boys to go bigger spells at night. but no success YET!
i understand how annoying it is when others whinge when they ONLY get 6 hours sleep! we'd kill for 6 hours!!!! lets all cross our fingers for our babies to become little angels and just have NICE BIG sleeps so we can all feel human again!!!!
hang in there.

Victoria was probably about 12 weeks old.

Adrian, it was sometime after his 6th birthday glare.gif.

My two are 2.5yo and still wake several times a night. That said, they do have lots of medical problems and can't eat food, so are still on an elemental formula.

Hi Kathreen,

My babies are now 16 weeks old.

They now do from 7pm - 3/4am (with 10pm feed).

Without the 10pm feed they would do from 7-1am and then 1.30am - 5am.

From maybe 6-8 weeks they had a long stretch (i.e. 6 hours the first thing in the evening, but then were very often 2 hourly after that). Its only now for their second set of sleep they will go 3-4 hours which is much better.

I have one twin who could probably do from 7- 4 or 5am consistency, but because I have to get up to the other twin at say 3am, I'm not getting up again at 4 or 5 so I feed her then too.

Thank goodness they usually straight back to bed after their night feeds now as the first 6-8 weeks they would be awake for ages if I wasn't really careful..

Its hard itsn't it!

Good luck it does change quickly!

The boys were 7 weeks (or 3 weeks corrected. Just pure luck - nothing I did nor didn't do.

Hope there is some more sleep for you around the corner

I'm with daisy goat on this one. Amber slept through 10ish till 5 from 9 1/2 months.

Olivia never slept through. Was still up at least three times a night till she was 4. Now at 7 she still wakes at least once a night. She does have food allergies.

They were 2.4 and 2.6 kg at birth. I remember at around 8 weeks my sister told me not to expect them to sleep through or drop a feed at 12 weeks. Best advice I was given. Let me prepare mentally for the weeks to come. .

Big difference to my sister who's bub was almost 4 kg's at birth thats similar size to mine at 10 or 11 weeks.

Hope you get some good sleep soon!

Positive response here from me!
My girls were formula fed from birth (virtually), and they started sleeping through from a 10:30pm dream feed, to about 5-6am at 7 weeks old. At 12 weeks, we thought we'd try to see if they could survive having no dream feed (which we were waking them for), and sure enough, SUCCESS!!! My girls were 2.3 and 2.9kg born, so wouldn't have been much more than 4kg by the 7 weeks.

So good luck. I hope it happens for you soon. xx

I've been really interested in all your replies, and you've spurned me on to try and see how long the girsl will sleep for tonight. So I'll be skipping the 10pm feed (which like PP we've been waking them for) and see how they go. Wish me luck!!

Your babies are still very young, are they premmies?

I am a bit scared answering your question. Mine slept 11 to 7 from about 8 weeks old and 7 to 7 a week later. From about 5 or 6 weeks old they were doing 7pm, 11pm, 3ish and 7. I had expressed and ff from the start and recorded every feed. It's suppose to be approx 150mls for every kg. Obviously can't do that for bf.

Hi Kathreen,

I have 19mth old twins DS and DD. When I had them I couldn't breastfeed so they were on formula from day 1.

They slept in the one cot together for 6wks until my boy seem to be moving around and waking his sister. As soon as I separated them my DD slept through from 7pm to 6.30am. My DS started about a week and a half later. They were very good eaters from day 1 - so I figured full tummies better sleep original.gif

I believe I am a very fortunate mum. They have been excellent sleepers as well - even now they go to sleep at 7.30pm and dont generally wake til 7am.

Good luck

I can't remember exactly but I think Chase was around 6 months old when he started sleeping through, maybe a bit earlier? I'm pretty sure he was going 4+ hours at about 3 months: I know I started getting a lot more sleep overall from about 3 months. He has always liked his sleep so even as a tiny baby I wasn't up for long with him.

Levi is 4.5 and I still wouldn't say he is consistently going more than 4 hours. He is still often up 2 or more times a night.

Mine gradually stretched their sleeps out so by 4-5 months they were sleeping 6-8hrs from like 8ish until 4, but once they hit 6months this changed. They just gradually went from 3hrs to 4 hrs to 5 hrs etc before they woke up for their first feed. I did make a rule for myself that as soon as they went to sleep at night I would go straight to bed, I found if I got at least 4hrs straight up it didn't matter if they woke up ten times after that but that inital 4-5hrs sleep really made a difference.

They are now 22mths and my daughter only sleeps through 50% of the time, my son has slept through the night from 7.30-8ish to 6.30 since he was 10mths

Arrggghhh...Don't tell me that...LOL...Madge is currently counting to 30 over & over in her bed as I type...She has been at it since she went to bed VERY reluctantly at 9pm...(ie Me dragging her down there threatening her that she will not be going to see Shrek tomorrow if I don't get some sleep!)

Mine are 13 months and 1 sleeps thru maybe every second night and the other one can't seem to sleep more than 3 hours at anyone time! I took them to sleep school at 11 months and the only thing that happened was their sleeping patterns reversed it the twin now sleeping thru was waking every 3 hours and the one waking 3 hours now was sleeping thru!

Hi Kathreen,

Henry and Georgiana are slowly stretching the time between feeds overnight. Last night, Henry was fed at about 8pm and then woke at 2am. I didn't know he hadn't been fed at 10pm (I had a raging temp and went to bed so didn't know he had fed earlier) but I was able to stretch him to 4am before he really wanted a feed. Poor kid! Generally though, they have been doing a dream feed at 10pm and then stirring around 3:30am. I was trying to feed them at this time but they were only half interested so a couple of nights ago I decided to see if they would settle with a dummy and a pat. Sure enough, they have both happily resettled and gone through to about 5am. I'm hoping that over the next week or so, they won't even stir but will just see what happens. Once they have settled in to this routine, I'll start trying to drop the dream feed. At the moment, they are both waking for it so I will continue to give it. Interestingly, the past couple of days (since I have been resettling rather than feeding), they have both been much more settled during the day.

My eldest was 4.5kg at birth and was sleeping from 10pm - 7am by 3 weeks and then 7pm - 7am well and truly by 2 months (can't remember exactly). It's a bit of a rude shock for me to still be waking for babies in the middle of the night - even though they're only 6.5 weeks!!
