I just found out on Tuesday (7wks & 4 days) that we are expecting twins. The heartbeats were close together so the sonographer wants to do another scan in two weeks to check they are not cojoined. So now that is all I can think about. Has anyone else with or having twins, had this mentioned to them at their first scan.

Firstly congratulations of the news! How exciting!
Secondly, I'm sorry for what you are giong through, I can't imagine how you are feeling. I am also a little surprised a sonographer would say that to you without knowing what was going on. We twin mums don't need anymore unnecessary worries.
I only discovered I was pregnant with twins at 15 weeks, so I was never in your situation. However I was told though after my 20 week scan that one twin looked like it was 'highly likely' that he had a chromosonal abnormality. My twins are 1 today and they are fine. Follow up scans with more experienced sonographers showed this. I hope this is the case for you too.

Thanks for your reply and Happy Birthday to your twins.
Elemenopee
Oh whoops blush.gif Not their birthday today, that was a few months ago!
I actually meant 1 years old now.
Hope this bump gets you more replies anyhow.

Yeah, I wreckon it was unneccessary for the sonographer to say that to you. Even if he was thinking it. No need for such stress until or unless there is an actual reason for it. My girls are ID and shared a placenta. At my 6+2 scan we saw 1 bubba and just the one heart beat and so didn't discover the 2 babies thing until my 12 week scan. I was then scanned fortnightly and their heart rates were always very close and often exactly the same.
mad madam mim
my twins were fraternal but their heart beats were usually only a few beats apart, 158 and 160 bpm and it was like that all the way though the pregnancy,

im sure your bubs will be fine.

congratulations and good luck for the rest of the pregnancy.

I assumed the OP meant the heart beats were close in proximity not rates?

I'm sorry you are having this scare OP. Such a time between scans too.

I hope everything works out for you.
Space_kitty
My original OB told us at 6 weeks that there were 2 embryos at one time, but that he could only see one heartbeat which meant my body would just reabsorb the "waste product"... One week later (after many tears and stress) there they were, Bubble & Squeak, both with heartbeats and perfectly fine.

At this early stage, it is so hard to see anything in any kind of detail. Identical twins can be seperated by the thinest of membranes and seeing that at 7 and a bit weeks would be almost impossible.

Try and think positive, conjoined twins are incredibly rare.

All the best for a smooth pregnancy and feel free to join the 'expecting multiples' thread!

The membrane between our twins wasn't super obvious until about 9 weeks? and they used to often hide behind each other etc before that.

Thanks everyone for your words of support. I was talking about how physically close together they were, rather than the actual heart rates. But one was 136 and one was 142, so thats all normal and too be expected. So hopefully everything else goes well. Will be having the scan again in 10 days, so hopefully after that I will be able to relax and to start to enjoy the pregnancy.

Ooops, sorry we all misunderstood. Still seems a bit of an odd call to make so early on. My IVF Dr never even noticed there was another baby at my 6+2 scan. I know it's another whole week earlier and a lot happens in a week in the world of baby growing but what I'm getting at is that they do sit very close together when they are so tiny and can hide behind each other so early on. Please try not to panic.

hi mskmcewan, even with my frats at 7 weeks they looked pretty inseparable - its just so hard to know when they are so little. Things are very vague at that point. Of course, we didnt know they were fraternal at that point for sure, but it was a pretty good guess since we did IVF and did 2 embies. So at least I had that to reassure me. It seems a bit cruel of the Sonographer to say something like that - surely they must see twins a lot, I would hope they dont say it to everyone.

Its so rare, Im sure your precious bubs will be fine. Good luck on your next scan original.gif

Hi OP, just wondering how the scan went? happy.gif
mskmcewan
We had our second scan today and it went really well. They are definitely not co-joined, but they do seem to be monochorionic monoamniotic (Momo) twins. Its still early days, but todays scan dated them at 9 weeks and 2 days. Very cool scan, could see them quite clearly and one of them was kicking there legs around. Still going to be a very long risky pregnancy if they are "Momo" but we are just going to take each day as it comes. biggrin.gif

Fantastic news, congratulations!!
Wishing you and yours all the best for the coming months.
Enjoy the months to come, IT IS scary, but IT IS fantastic!!
I'll follow your story, thanks for sharing original.gif

So pleased you came back to update us. I have been thinking of you and hoping all was well. I hope that as the babies and everything else grows that they discover a membrane. If they do turn out to be momo, there is a US based support forum group thingy that you can join for extra advice etc. http://www.monoamniotic.org/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/cfrm

Hi there,

Great news that they are not conjoined! Fingers crossed that they find a membrane between your babies also. They could find a very thin one for us at the 9/10 week mark, but not before.

There is also a support network on the AMBA (multiple birth) website. http://www.amba.org.au/ If you click on Forums you can join and chat to others in the same situation.

What a great attitude to take it day by day!

Cheers
Michelle

That's fantastic news that they aren't conjoined! Fingers crossed they find a membrane, but if not, I'm sure you are in excellent hands.

I found the early scans up to about 18 weeks to be the best, after that, it became really hard to tell who was who (even though they are DiDi) and what was what, it just gets too crowded!

Thanks for updating! All the best for a smooth pregnancy!

Congrats on you pregnancy!

I have six month old Momo twins, so know exactly how scary this type of pregnancy can be! If you can, check out amba.org.au once you have made 5 posts it unlocks the monoamniotic board and there are a number of us with momo twins. I found it a great support thoughout my pregnancy.

Fingers crossed for a boring and uneventful pregnancy.
