Hi, we live in country SA and have just found out we are haing twins which is a bit of a shock as we have a 20month old and wasnt trying at moment. we are very happy though, although a little concerned with all the bits that come with having two new babys and 3 kids under age of 3.
We have decided to have our twins in adelaide because we are unable to have them at our local hospital and are just wondering if anyone can recommend a good ob/gyn and hospital that has history with twins in adelaide. We are private and dont have anyone to stay with in adel so location isnt a hassle, just want to make sure its someone good cause bit scared about complicatons even though my son was born problem free, easy natural labour.

We used Chris Wilkinson at the WCH, I'm private and opted for private cover in public hospital (if there's any trouble at all and they come before 32 weeks, you'll be transferred to the WCH anyway, that or Flinders Medical Centre)
Chris specialises in risky pregnancies and twin pregnancy is classified as just that. He prefers natural delivery if possible (ie so long as twin 1 head down and pregnancy going ok)
In our case twin 1 had IUGR and Chris was wonderful, seeing us through, helping us with seeing a neonatal paed before they were born, doing scans often (in the end I was hospitalised for observation)
It was good having organised an ob in the hospital I was needing to deliver in anyway
Also the quality of accomodation and care in the WCH was AWESOME. I got my own LARGE room, enormously good when you have twins (although I hadn't needed it really as they were in NICU!!!!)
If you want any more info, PM me!
Niss x
PS He is very popular so you need to get in quite early - how many weeks are you? Also, where do you live in the country, there is another EB Multiple Mum in country SA

Hi and congratulations!
I live in rural SA, too, grew up on YP and now over near Clare. My eldest 2 were 1 & 3 when I had my twins, so I know the worry you are feeling!
I had my twins in the public system, at the WCH, and their care was top notch, with excellent doctors and midwives. I think I would have ended up with the same docs even if I had gone private, my twins were high risk and they were the most experienced in my particular issues.
I have also heard the LM has a great SCBU, too.
Can't help you beyone that, sorry!

Yep, it was the ob mentioned above I used, as well as another from the Maternal Fetal Medicine team. I also got my own double room as a public patient, although I did have to share a room for one night when I was in for observations (1 night out of a week).
MissNiss, one of my twins had IUGR too.

hi there, congratulations on your twins! i had my twins at Flinders Private hospital. this hospital is co located with Flinders medical centre so great if you do have any problems with the twins being early or needing special care level 4. Flinders private can take level 3 i think and after 32 weeks termers. I had Jane wood deleiver all my kids and highly recommend her. i was fortunate not to have any problems during the pregnancy and delivered by c-section at 37.2 weeks. Jane was great and even was happy to have me deliver vaginally if the twins co-operated (they didnt of course!). if you have private cover i would highly recommend Flinders private as it was a lovely hospital, great staff and facilities and the security of FMC next door. guess it might also depend on how booked out the OB's might be given you are 10wks already, some book out very quickly,
good luck and feel free to ask questions

Congratulations. I too am expecting twins. I am going to Burnside under Karen Chandler. She has delivered all my children and is fantastic and a mother of three herself. Burnside can only take babies after 32wks though so if early you will go to WCH but Karen has delivery rights there.
A friend of mine had twins with Burnside last year, she did have to deliver at WCH but with Karen and once bubs were stronger she transferred then to Burnside.
Twins was a big shock for us too. We have a 5yo, 3yo and 2yo but twins hasn't changed my choice or faith in my OB or hospital. I also want to go v birth and Karen has been very welcoming of this fact

Hi and congratulations!
I am in rural SA too, in the upper south east. My bubs were delivered by Kaye Wilson of WilsonSandercock, at Ashford hospital. I ended up having a c-section, but she let me try naturally first. (As long as both bubs were head down she is VERY supportive of v births). I was hospitalised at 30 weeks and the care I received at Ashford during the 4.5weeks I was there and the further 3 weeks the bubs were kept in care, was awesome. We also roomed in for 2 nights when the bubs were ready to come home, so that we could be a little bit prepared for what was to come! We had so much care and support and an excellent paediatrician, which is also something to think about. We had Chris Munt as ours, he specialises in prems and therefore also does a lot of work with multiples. He was so lovely and caring and we were filled with confidence and as first time parents, so grateful for all the support. They also are a level 2 neonatal unit and experienced with multiples. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi and congratulations!
There are a few lovely ladies from SA in the Expecting Multiples group, they may also be of some assistance. (It's located in the Specialised Pregnancy Support Group section of the forums)
Best wishes

I'm having the triplets publicly through Flinders Medical Centre. For most of the pregnancy I'm seeing Dr Linda McKendrick who is fantastic, and exceptionally (refreshingly) honest! Because two of the babies are identical twins, I am also seeing Dr Jay McGavigan (sp?) because she specialises in Twin to Twin Transfusion. I have had care that is second to none, and even though I'm a public patient, I will have a single room when in hospital and once the babies arrive. The other thing is that Linda is a twin mum herself so has some understanding of pregnancy with multiples! I guess the advantage for me has been having private care under the public system!

Hi There,
I also saw Dr Linda McKendrick and she was fantastic (I knew she has heaps of kids but didn't know she was a Mum of twins!). My girls were delivered at Ashford and I was really happy with the care they (and I) received. If the girls came before 32 weeks, we would have gone to Flinders Medical Centre, but Linda has delivery rights there too. My girls were also at risk of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome and Linda monitored this extremely well. She was happy to answer as many questions as I had at each visit, regardless of how trivial or silly I thought they may have been. Dr Chris Munt is our girls' paediatrician and he is absolutely fantastic. He really cares about the whole family unit and checks on how the parents are going, not just the babies.
We have no plans to have any more children, but if we did, I would definitely go back to Linda and Chris.
All the best.

Hi, thanks, so much for your replys.
In the end it turned out much harder than i had thought to find any obst in adelaide. Most said they were booked up til march.....how does anyone even know they are pregnant by then?
anyway, thanks to a lot of me annoying the lovely receptionist at WCH fetal thingy she managed to get me into the obst Dr jeff mathews that also travells to Pt Lincoln to consult so that works out wonderfully for less travelling!
I had no idea it was going to be so hard to find anyone, considering i ws only 11weeks at the time. one doctor a flinders said they would take me but were schedualed for holidays around my due date so probably wouldnt deliver and charged $4000 above the gap for private health. how is that even possible?? and here i was thinking private health was good to have.
Oh well, i'm happy. Ive heard lots of good things about WCH and they will take me so thats that.
thanks again everyone!!

Good to hear, and wow, who knew it was so hard to find an ob. I didn't find out I was pregnant with twins until I was 15 weeks.
If you end up going as a public patient, it is really quite good. My care was excellent, I was seeing the top maternal fetal health professionals is SA (my twins had some health issues).
