Interesting article in the Herald Sun today: Births, Deaths and Marriages in Vic this week released stats for the most popular middle names for 2009.
For those that are interested the list included:
1. Rose (no suprises here

)
2. Grace (or here!)
3. Jane
4. Louise
5. Elizabeth
6. Jade
7. May
8. Anne
9. Kate
10. Lee
1. James (Wadda know

)
2. John
3. William
4. Thomas
5. Michael
6. David
7. Alexander
8. Robert
9. Jack
10. Anthony
Interestingly the list does not differ much from the middle name stats from 1970 or 1990. It seems middle name tastes stay more consistent

DS's middle name is after my father who passed away in 2003 and also a saints name whom I pray to (#10 on the list).
In our family we generally use a family middle name e.g of a relative (more often than not a deceased one) so yes I can see how they'd remain consistent over time.
In high school, most of my friend's has the middle name Claire, Barbara or Anne - I thought it was hilarious!

Very interesting.
Mine, DS', my fathers, mothers and sisters names are ALL there.

Interrsting that the lists have remained similar - I suppose it
is quite common to use family names as middle names, and with the trend towards "uneek" names, we often see the advice in here to go with a "safe" middle name. So, yes, I can see how middle name trends wouldn't change much.

I have always regretted DD2's middle name because it was so "middle namey" and that list just confirmed it for me! LOL.

LOL all four of the names we've picked out (girl 1st & middle, boy 1st & middle) show up somewhere in our family tree, or are a version of a name in there. All very Western European. None are on the list. Weird!

My DS has 2 middle names, do both go towards the count or just the first one I wonder?

My mn is Jane, my sister's is Lee and brother's is John. Only my little brother's isn't there. We were all born in 70/80's so I guess they do not change much.

We tend to use family names as MN too - my daughters mn is Vieno, named after DH finnish grandmother (who practically raised him). Very unusual and definately wouldn't be something that I would pick, except that she is such a special woman in our lives.
I thought Maree/ Marie would be there, thats my mn (a blend of my 2 GMs -> shirley and mary) and I swear when I was at school every second girl had this as a mn (I did go to a catholic school with a high number of italians though - maybe thats why)

Jane would be the one that surprised me the most. I hardly ever hear it anymore.

I'd say they don't change because they're so often family names.
My DS mn is Thomas, partly because I liked it and it went with his first name, also because it's a family name on his father's side being his mother's maiden name.
I'm one of the few people I know without any middle name.

3 of my four kids middle names are on that list - and are family names.
The only one that isnt on the list is Charles - and it is the middle name of both my Dad and DHs Dad.

I agree with this -
in our case DD mn is Grace after her Nonna (Anna Grazia - Anna meaning Grace and Grazia - well, I am sure i don't have to translate that one for you

) and mine is Elizabeth after my auntie (which DD would have got if her fn had been shorter).
Thomas and Michael are also strong family names. Mary is another one.

Only myself and DS#1 have middle names on there (Jane and James). Mine is a family mn and DS#1's is after my Dad.

2 of my children have those Middle Names, Louise and Thomas. The other 2 don't have those popular middle names. The names seemed to flow with their first name and our last name. I assure you that my MN and my dh's MN isn't on the list.

Mine and my three siblings middle names are on that list! (Born 1972, 1975, 1980 and 1982.)
My Dad's middle name is on that list! (Born 1941.)

Interesting list. Thanks for posting MistressMabel

A lot of my family's middle names are on the female list, but not so for the boys names.
For those that are interested the list included:
1. Rose (no suprises here

) - my neice's middle name
2. Grace (or here!) - DD1's middle name (which I had chosen only because I thought it matched her name really well & hadn't even researched or realised how popular it actually is!)
3. Jane - my youngest sister's middle name
4. Louise - my middle name
5. Elizabeth
6. Jade
7. May - my Mum's middle name
8. Anne
9. Kate - DD2's middle name (chosen because of my mother Kathryn)
10. Lee
1. James (Wadda know

)
2. John
3. William
4. Thomas
5. Michael
6. David
7. Alexander
8. Robert
9. Jack
10. Anthony
My middle sister's middle name (Clare) isn't on the list, nor is my DS's (Ellis) nor are many of my male relatives (bar John)
