I always loved the Golden Books especially 'The Monster at the End of the Book' where Grover tries all sorts of things to stop you turning the page (because of the monster at the end of the book). Can't wait to read it to my son.

I'm reading DD all my old Enid Blyton books, which originally belonged to my mother so they are lovely and unedited. I adore re-reading them so most of them are actually sitting on my bedside table for me to read on my own original.gif

I hope she loves them as much as I do or I'll be devastated! That's why I thought I better read them to her now before she is old enough to protest.
spersephone
Where The Wild Things Are
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Magic Faraway Tree
The Naughtiest Girl in School
The Wishing Chair

And so many more. I'm collecting Harry Potter books and DVDs although I discovered them in my adulthood, I believe my girls will love them when they're older. And all my Judy Blumes I'll let them read when they're about 10 or so.

Kittens

(was mine, given to me by Great Aunt - DS1 is obsessed with cats, due to my parents having one - he even takes this book for sleepovers at their place)

BTW, all those who mentioned the Enid Blyton books - these are apparently worth a mint now, particularly as a set in hard cover.

Fish out of water.

Fish out of Water by Helen Palmer Geisel
Oh the Places you will Go
The story of Ping
What do you do with a Kangaroo?
spersephone
The Enid Blyton ones that are most valuable are obviously the older edition ones. I've bought some reprinted hardbacks that wouldn't be worth much and I scour op shops for older ones. I always loved The Naughtiest Girl in School and ended up naming my daughter Elisabeth, perhaps subconsciously after Elizabeth in that series?
claireabell
I can't wait to introduce my kids to the Roald Dahl books when they are older.
spersephone
Oooh yes, The Witches and The BFG were probably my favourites!
niggles
Tikki Tikki Tembo and The Story of Ping I picked up recently because I remember loving them so much. I still have my childhood copy of The Velveteen Rabbit which I adore, but it's still a little long for DD to read.

DH loves to read her his very dog-eared, much loved copy of Mr Magnolia by Quentin Blake. It's such a fabulous story.
Bel Rowley
I always loved Janet and Allan Ahlberg. The first time I read Peepo to my daughter I cried, it's such a beautiful book.
mrsjessop
Lots of the picture books mentioned already as well as plenty of chapter books, eg, Enid Blyton (which I have been collecting via ebay - I don't like the new editions as they have been edited to make them more modern and PC), Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, the Wizard of Oz, Pippi Longstocking etc etc.

I still read to my 11yo but only if it is something that I want to read too, eg, we are currently most of the way through the Malory Towers series. I also read her modern books by authors like Jacqueline Wilson. These weren't around when I was young but I know I would have devoured them if they were. Next on our list is Are You There God, It's Me Margaret which was a huge revalation to me in Year 6.

I am also reading Blinky Bill to my 7yo. This isn't quite as good as I remembered. Much prefer Snugglepot and Cuddlepie these days (even though this resulted in my daughter freaking out about 'big bad banksia men' if we ever came across banksia seed pods at the park etc).
niggles
I just got a couple of "Ramona" books from a market on the weekend. I loved those books so much when I was Ramona's age! DD is still too little for them to hold her attention but I think I'll be passing them on to my sisters for my nieces for a while.

From my childhood: Bears in the Night, Hungry Caterpillar, the Tawny Scrawny Lion. I'd forgotten Fish out of Water - will go and look for it!

I must say, my DDs have far better books than I ever had (and far more of them!).

now I enjoy reading Very Hungry Caterpiller and Wocket in my pocket.

Whey they are older I can't wait for them to get into Snugglepot & Cuddlepie and Fantastic Mr Fox.

Older still - Famous Five, Trixie Beldon & Anne of Green Gables. (well dd anyway)

Slightly OT but we are enjoying finding old songs on You Tube the kids will like.

DD is currently (like right this second) listening to/watching Butterfly Ball. They also like "Manamana" and Tra La La (banana splits)...
