I'm about half way through this book and I must say it's one of the weirdest books I've read in a long time, but also one of the most intriguing (and amusing). Apparently there's going to be a second and third book along the same lines.

Being someone who loves colours, I find the idea of a world ruled by colours really fascinating.

So I'm just wondering if anyone else out there has read it or is currently reading it, and what do you think?

Haven't read it yet, but I love Jasper Fforde and will be reading Shades of Grey for my book club in a few months, so will let you know when I get to it original.gif.

Saw this in the shops recently, but had to discipline myself to finish the Thursday Next and Nursery Crimes series before purchasing it.

His books are fantastic aren't they! Picked one up years ago and didn't 'get it', where as now I think they're some of the most clever out-there books around. Love em Tounge1.gif

I've struggled to get into Nursery Crimes. They just don't pull me in the way the Thursday Next books do.

I have to admit I wasn't familar with Jasper Fforde before reading this book. It was a lucky find on the library's "new books" shelf. I'll have to check if they have any more of his books.

I'm about 3/4 through now and still loving it... still have no idea what's going to happen (well, apart from the fact that he told us right at the beginning how the story ends... but I'm still hoping there will be a different outcome and it was just a teaser of sorts), so it's keeping me in suspense. Will be interested to hear what you guys think of it. original.gif

I love Jasper Fforde and got to meet him when he came to Australia a few years ago.

Don't have this book yet..........glad that is sounds good.
JJ
Well, I'm a bit miffed now. cry1.gif I finished the book last night and while it was a great read, the actual story only just began at the end of the book. So reading the sequels is a must... but as far as I know they haven't even been published yet. I'm not that patient! *stomps foot*
Lainskii
It looks like it will be out soon as he cancelled an appearance in Perth due to commitments to get the book finished and he looks like it will be out before the end of the year.
Sambient
Finished it last week and enjoyed it so much that I've started it again. It was good but you're right the story really started at the end. Am looking forward to the other two but I think we'll be getting the next Thursday Next book.

I love Jasper Fforde's books too (I also haven't read this one yet, sadly. maybe you have inspired me to get some more reading done before next baby comes). But in all his series he spends the first book setting up the reality and givng the background etc. then the next on absolutely belts along. Well that's how I find them anyway. Hopefully the next one in the series will be worth the wait for you.

I was going to start a thread on this the other week. I have to admit I was a bit bored with the other two series, but I reckon SoG is his best yet, written without the crutch of other people's characters.

Looking forward to the next book (which can't hurt his sales figures....)

Finished last night and I really enjoyed it. I wasn't really sure at first because it is so different to Thursday Next and the Nursery Crimes books. But I liked the totally different world he created.

Spoiler ahead

But the ending was so sad. I was absolutely devestated for Eddie having to let Imogen and Dorian go and also awfully sorry for them both that Jane turned out to be Green. (But oh I would love to see a child of theirs grin.gif ).

I'm really looking forward to the next book now.
Madame Cholet
I love Jasper Fforde. Shades of Grey is next on my reading lust after I trudge through Wolf Hall.

Yes, that was a bummer! But was she really green or did they just give her that ranking to... I don't know, avoid more trouble? After all, if she's no longer a Grey, she's got something to lose. It's been a while now since I finished it, but that was one of the points I wasn't sure about.

I now have "The Big Over Easy" by Jasper Fforde here, which I think is one of the Nursery Crimes series? To be read as soon as I get around to it. biggrin.gif

I love his stuff and really enjoyed Shades of Grey; I've introduced my dad to his books via that one now. Although I started the Thursday Next series when he'd finished it, so it was so much nicer to be able to read the next book straight away! But then, I love that I'll reread SoG just before the next one comes out. Only problem is, I bought my copy as a UK airport edition (hardcover size but paperback) so I'll have to get someone to bring me the next book over in the same version biggrin.gif

Madame Cholet, trudging through Wolf Hall is right! I couldn't believe it was deemed superior to The Glass Room. Now THAT was excellent.

Better put a spoilers notice in the title of this thread - I don't think people who haven't read the book would appreciate knowing how it ends!

I love Jasper Fforde and read Shades of Grey at the beginning of the year; started re-reading it immediately - found I got even more out of it once I knew how it ends and had a better understanding of the structure of the world he's created.

I think he's one of the only truly original authors I've read - although I sometimes wonder how his mind works to be able to think up the things he does!

ETA - my impression was that the purples bribed the Colourman to make Jane be green so as to make it impossible for them to marry, making Eddie available for the daughter again (can't remember her name)

Edited again to add my own spoiler alert.

Yes a bit of that plus I thought revenge from the yellow prefect after the death of Courtland. It will be interesting to see Jane's colour perception in the next book. Although the night vision is pretty astounding.

PS sorry about the previous spoiler, I always forget because I wait to read a book before I read the thread (that's why I went looking for this one because I so wanted to read this thread when it first opened). I'll put an alert in my post.

Maybe add spoiler to the titel OP??

I'm a big fan of JF too and have read all his other books, love both Nursery Crimes and Thursday Next series, but haven't read this yet. His website is fun.
