I had this done on Thursday after seeing it on ACA last year. I did lots of research (as it isn't cheap) before I committed.
So far my hair looks bloody amazing but I haven't washed it yet.
I had strict instructions not to get it wet for 72 hours (and I stood in sprinkling rain at a swimming carnival the next day), and not tuck it behind your ears or put sunnies on your head (um, which I have done both things).
I am allowed to wash it tonight, but I don't think I will (the longer you leave it the better apparently). It still looks great and I can run over it with a straightner as much as I like apparently.

I got told it does not damage your hair and a lady that had her shoulder length hair done at the same time as me actually had her hair bleached and coloured (half white blonde and half pink) before she had hers done.

Has anyone else had it done? How long did it last and was it the answer to your hair problems?
I don't care if my hair is not straight, I just want to be able to let it dry naturally or even blow dry it without looking like Cher. My hair is terribly fuzzy and the hairdresser said "you wont know yourself when you have this done".
I hope she is right.

My older sister had this done and loves it.

It looks quite good too, which is a bonus for her.

I'm going to be following this post. I've been wondering how to control my hair because it's just terrible at the moment with all the humidity in Melbourne.

I so wish I had beautiful thick shiny hair.
alphamum
Ooh let me know how you go. My hairdresser is considering getting it into her salon and wants me to be her test dummy as my hair is very thick, course and frizzy, so if it works on me it will work on anyone. Sounds like it would be very expensive to keep it up though. Do you know how often you need to treat it?
Kenzi_Bubble
Where did you get this done?
Rockstar
I had my hair chemically straightened a month ago and it is still nice and straight.
The keratin one was way too expensive and doesn't last as long between treatments. $400+ (depending on hair length, long long hair can be about $800) every 4 months as opposed to $170 once every 6-8 months was what did it for me.
I left my hair 4 days I think before washing it out. I put a treatment in my hair once a week as advised and it is coming along very nicely. I do know of someone though who had it done and paid the $800 and left it 5 days before washing and their hair went straight back to curls. This had me panicking! Apparently there is no guarantee it will work. But I guess its the same with people not being able to take perms/colours either.

I can now after amonth safely colour my hair as it is back in good condition.

I was told it was ok to get it a bit wet, so rain , or wetting it a bit to get rid of morning bed hair was ok.
Virgo03
I had this done in January, my hair is shoulder length and very thick & fizzy, I just wanted it controlled. It cost $300 & was supposed to last 3 months, as soon as I washed it it went to curls. Rung the hair dresser & she said it could have been for a number of reasons (just had a baby, hormones, breast feeding etc), went back & they put a chemical straightener in it, this one is supposed to last for 6 months (not too sure what it would cost - they didn't charge me).
So far I absolutely love it - I previously had to straighten my hair all the time, so no longer have to do that, and because my hair is so thick it just looks thinner and just to be able to jump out of the shower & let it dry naturally is so good!!
I highly recommend it - but just check with your hair dresser first about what they would do "if" it didn't work (just in case!!)
Bellisymo
Oh well it will be interesting to see what my hair looks like after I wash it.
I had my hair chemically straightened last year and it did not do anything except damage my hair really badly and made it look worse.
I have a few health problems which are reflected in the condition of my hair anyway, so I didn't want to do anything this time that was going to damage it further.

I am not concerned if my hair is not 'pin/dead straight' and from what I can gather it wont be, I more went with this treatment to take the fuzziness out of it. If it works, I would be happy to pay to have this done three times a year. i don't drink or smoke or even eat chocolate so I consider this my 'addiction'. Oh I could always give up buying handbags too!

I live rurally in south west NSW, I travelled to Wagga to have it done.
Sal78

what's keratin? is it the bionic hair straightening?

they're charging ridiculous prices.

Best bet is to go to an asian hair salon. They have a lot of experience in this....the japanese and korean especially.

It makes your hair really silky smooth and straight and you don't need to blow dry.

I had mine done for $220 and it was longish. It took about 5 hrs +. This was back in november. It still looks really good and very healthy.

But I probably won't do it again as the straight look isn't in anymore. My hair is straight anyway but I just wanted it dead straight.

I love the digital perm look. It's a natural wave done exactly the same way as straightening using relaxant. Your hair dries straight then you just twirl it in your fingers for natural waves. You don't need to have your hair wet to have curls like the horrible traditional perms. Basically your waves looks like your hair has been styled everyday with rollers. It's the biggest thing in asia atm. You only get it done from about the ears down, not the whole hair.

Mine didn't work. sad.gif

Had it done on Monday just gone and didn't wash it until this morning and it has dried into a massive frizzball. Because I had my haircut shorter just after doing it, it actually looks puffier than usual.

It does feel nice and soft though.

I've rang the salon. Apparently I'm the first client of theirs it hasn't worked on. Will drop in and see them when DH gets home to see if there is anything they can do.

Sal, this isn't the Japanese straightening, it's the Brazillian. Apparently the Japanese chemicals contain formaldehyde, where the Barzillian Keratin doesn't. The Japanese lasts much longer though, and gives a straighter result. The Braziliian is more about smoothing than straightening (or neither in my case!)

Bellisymo, how did your hair turn out? original.gif

I am thinking of having it done. My hair is pretty damaged looking at the moment!
Did it help with the condition of your hair?

KA
I had the Keratin straightening done last December and it worked really well. I have thick, coarse hair and lots and lots of it. It is just starting to grow out at the roots now so it is a bit fuller on top but still easy to maintain and I don't style it at all, just wash it and let it dry.

I have also had the chemical straightening done twice in an Asian salon and it is much, much harsher on your hair. Because my hair is coloured regularly (to cover all those grey ones) the Keratin is a much better option for me.

I paid $300 US (am living in the States) and I was in the chair for 5 hours!!!!! Bit of a drag but worth it to get the condition of my hair back and have it manageable at the same time. It is not as straight as the chemical straightening but it is pretty close. I think mine will probably last another couple of months , so it will probably be a once every 6 months thing for me.
manlou4
I asked the hairdresser about it when I went a couple of weeks ago. She said there was a whole batch they got that just didn't work (around Christmas time), so they got all of those ladies in again and it worked with the new batch.
I am getting it done when I start working again, a) so I can afford it! and b) so I don't have to spend an hour doing a dodgy job on my hair every morning.
I'm a couple of hours away, but I'd travel to Wagga if I knew your hairdresser did a good job laughing2.gif
Bellisymo
I would definately have the Keratin treatment done again.
HOWEVER: it did not make my hair straight so please don't go and get it done if you are thinking it is going to make your hair dead straight. What it did do to my hair was turn my very very thick coarse fuzzy hair into manageable silky smooth hair. It really took the frizz out. Now instead of taking me 40 mins to straighten my hair, it takes about 10. I had very long hair and had heaps chopped off two weeks after I had it done and it is great. I paid a lot to have it done but it wont cost as much next time as it is shorter now.

It took 3 hours to have it done and it wasn't a traumatic experience at all, they wash your hair, blow dry it, put the keratin in your hair by doing tiny sections at a time and combing it through, wrap your hair in gladwrap for half an hour, and then blowdry your hair and then straighten in with a ghd over and over again (in tiny sections). Then you can't wash it for 72 hours but this isn't a problem as my hair looked great for that 72 hours, you can use a straightener on it in that time as much as you wish.

I have never had my hair feel so 'normal'. It is lovely and soft and I can actually run my fingers through it.

foolofatook
Anyone got any before and after pics?

I've always been curious about these treatments. My hair is really straight naturally so I'm not sure if it would be worth getting it done (I straighten it for poker straight hair but my hair is down to my butt so would cost a fortune).

Glad yours turned out great OP.
ellepen
I own a hair and beauty salon and yes we do the keratin straightening. It is fantastic for anyone with thicker, frizzier hair. We probably do one or two clients a week with it. If you do get it done please make sure you definitely use the recommended shampoo and conditioner. If the salon you are getting it done at is a decent one then they will give you your first lot of shampoo & conditioner as part of the treatment.
It doesn't completely dead straighten your hair but makes it far easier to manage and run the irons through if that is what you want.
Also it is much better on your hair than any kind of chemical straightening. I don't even offer chemical straightening in my salon.
The bonus is also that it can be done on bleached blonde hair and it actually improves the condition of the hair.
As for the cost - it can take a stylist anywhere from 2-4 hours to do (depending on the length & thickness of your hair). That stylist is with you and working on your hair the whole time. The product is not cheap for the salon owner to buy. Also please remember that your hair stylist is a fully trained and qualified tradesperson. They are an apprentice for the equivalent of 4 years much the same as any other "tradie" like a plumber, electrician etc etc.
A number of our stylists and also our nail technician have had it done and they love it. I would highly recommend it. original.gif
StilettoMum
Ok - I've just had it done today. My hair is very fine and long. Took 2 hours and cost $316, which included a bottle each of Keratin Complex Shampoo and conditioner (400ml sizes). I'll come back in 72 hours after the wash and let you know how it went. So far my hair feels great - silky!
RaggedyAnne
Can you get it done on just some of the hair? My hair is curly underneath and straight on top. It's really thick and I straighten it every day with GHDs, but need to work really hard to make it non-boofy.
StilettoMum
Update: Well its now Saturday - I can't wash my hair until tommorow. Yesterday it did get a bit wet as it rained but my hair didn't frizz or curl at all. As warned by my hairdresser my hair feels greasy today am looking forward to washing it but still very happy.
Rhylia
Hi, thanks for the link to this thread StilettoMum.

I've decided to give the Global Keratin treatment a go. I spoke to a couple of local salons today and they quoted me between $260 and $320, this did not include the shampoo and conditioner after care though. It's very expensive but I don't spend alot of $$ on myself at all, plus I have Mother's Day and a birthday coming up biggrin.gif

From what I have read the Japanese straightening treatment is really harsh on your hair, and I don't really want a flat, dead straight look. Apparently the Keratin treatment is good for your hair and the more times you have it done the better.

Can anyone recommend a salon in Melbourne?

StilettoMum
I can recomend mine in Melbourne (ringwood) not sure where you are located though.
Rhylia
That would be great StilettoMum, I'm in Eltham so not too far.
StilettoMum
Update! - Washed hair on Sunday and noticed the difference in styling time dramatically. Took me less than 5 minutes to dry and & style. My hair hardly tangled and any waviness was practically non existant - nothing a quick run over with a straightener didn't whip into shape in seconds. Given my hair is coloured, fine and long this is by far a better treatment for my hair given its not a damaging chemical and with shortened styling time I'm going to expose my hair to less stress. I will have to use far less conditioner now though - to avoid greasy hair as its healthier!
WizzFizz
Hi girls,

I'm also looking into the Keratin treatment but weighing up whether I should do that or the Japanese one which from my research seems cheaper & lasts longer ? I'm inclined to go with the Keratin due to the protein as my hair is coloured & can dry out if I don't condition it.

My normal salon is quoting $500 (!!!!) for the Keratin which seems really expensive compared to other quotes in this thread. Anyone got any recommendations of somewhere in Sydney to get it done that's cheaper ? I live North Shore.

Thanks. Great to hear some good success stories.

Rhylia
WizzFizz - $500 does seem excessive, maybe shop around for other quotes and then ask them to match it. I prefer the Keratin to the Japanese treatment because I don't want a dead straight look, plus my hair is coloured and dry so the Keratin will help with this.

Well, I'm booked in for tomorrow. I ended up booking into a salon close to home, but thanks for the PM anyway StilettoMum. Of course it's going to rain, rain, rain for the next few days so I'll have to be prepared with umbrella, hoodie tops etc. I've been quoted $320 which includes shampoo and conditioner after care products. Fingers crossed it tames my curl for a while, I'll let you know how I go.

StilettoMum - how is your's going?
StilettoMum
Hi Rhylia - I just got back from Byron Bay - my hair got rained on, I swam in the ocean - and the hair stayed relatively relaxed. Washing and drying it was a breeze. Overall I'm extremely happy with having the treatment - would def get it again. :-)
monsta76
hhmm this keratin thing sounds good. im very interested!! although its sounds like a lot of money tho. huh.gif

would anyone be game enough to post before and after shots??? hehehe biggrin.gif
lovelove2012
I got quated today for japanese straightning $200. My hair is up to my bum. He said will take 4hours. I will get my hair done in a month or so. The hairdresser is at stgeorge area sydney if anyone is interested message me and i will let u know.
tedpos
I am looking into this very seriously. I have been quoted $350 (on special this month and next month) and around $40 for both shampoo and conditioner when purchased with treatment or $40 each after treatment.

My sister had it done with the same hairdresser 2 weeks ago and loves its. We both have curly frizzy thick hair.

We both had our hair chemically straightned years ago and didn't like it. So was skeptical about Keratin until my sister had hers done.

What brands have you had done? My hairdresser uses Coppola.
baf65
I had the coppola done back in about late October. I do think its great and it totally tamed my frizzy curly hair, made it so much eaiser to straighten myself which Ive never been able to do before
For me the downside was that if I wanted to leave it curly it was too 'soft' to actually hold a style, that meant I would have to put product on it, that then means that each morning Id have to damp it and put more product in it, the more product = more washing = less time the keratin would last
So...that meant I had to wear my hair straight all the time, which isnt a problem really, but I wouldnt get it done say before going on a holiday were I would be in the pool every day as it would need washing more often
I would like to get it done again, when $$ permit
In the meantime I think its kind of grown out now, but I use Morrocan oil after washing and have found that is brilliant for a nice smooth sleeky finish when I straighten
I have yet to find a decent product for curly hair however!!

I paid $500 for my then shoulder lengthy very thick hair, including the shampoo and conditioner and Ive only just finished the bottles so they lasted a long time, but I only washed my hair once a week
tedpos
I had the Keratin Treatment by Coppola done yesterday. So far it is so nice and shiny and so so soft.... happy so far but the real test will be Sunday when I wash it and see how I go for that week.

Mine was $390 including the Shampoo and Conditioner and my hair is long and thick. My sister had hers done about a month ago and love it.

Will keep you all posted once I wash it..... if any one is interested.
Jack's Mummy
I also have been looking into this for a while now, I have paid $700 previously for bio ionic straightening system which was horrible - I had 2 kinks in otherwise straight hair and it still frizzed.

However I was quoted from several hairdressers upwards of $750 for the keratin treatment.

So I did a naughty thing and I ordered the product from the us and I did it myself.

It worked wonderfully, I thinkt the difference for me was that it wasn't straight like the bio ionic made it but it had a wave but NO FRIZZ. I could let it air dry and it looked like normal hair.

Now I just want to stress that I did months of research into this product before I chose to go down this path of doing it myself, so please don't flame me for doing it myself and I would never recommend doing it yourself but $700+ is just not in my price bracket.
I would never bio ionic straighten or chemically straighten my hair myself.

I do have before and afters if anyone is interested.

It has lasted around 4 months before the frizzies on top have come out with a vengance and I plan to repeat it over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly it took me around 4 hours with a friends help.

(I used the coppola one by the way)

Tedpos - How did you get on after washing it?

Can anyone recommend a salon in Melbourne?

I've had it done at Salon Shique in South Yarra about four times now. They are terrific and very reasonably priced compared to other quotes I got. They often send vouchers and coupons out to clients too, which helps with the cost.

I love the treatment. My hair is no trouble at all now. It's brilliant.
JLG
I'd love to see some before and after shots. really keen to get this done.
mjm0309
I would be interested in seeing before/after shots too as I have been considering having this treatment done.

For those who have had it done, is your hair actually straight or does it still have some wave/curl but just without the frizziness? I have thin curly hair which I always wear up unless I straighten it (which is not as often as I would like with a 1 year old!).

Thanks!

Jack's Mummy
For those wanting before and afters:

this is my hair BEFORE the treatment: (blowdryed straight so not a great example but I cannot find my other before pics) WARNING: I look hideous! Sorry! (this is also very tame compared to what it is like normally)
Before Keratin
This is AFTER the treatment and just AIRDRIED:
Airdried

This is after the treatment and blowdried:
After Keratin and 5 min blowdry

There is other photos in my photobucket album showing the shine as well if you want a look.

Keratin hair before and afters

mjm0309 - My hair is naturally curly and very thick.
I found it was straight as anything if i blowdried it but if i tied it up to dry I would have the kinks from the hairtie. however the no frizz was what won me over regardless.
There are different formulas to make it straight and to just get rid of the frizz, your salon should know.

I've heard of quite a few women doing it themselves so you aren't alone. The pictures you posted further down the thread look really good! I might look into it one day.

when you did it yourself, did you actually do it yourself or get someone to help you out? i cant imagine how id have the patience to do it myself, it was time consuming enough getting a hairdresser who does half a dozen a week to do it

I did it myself with just help from a friend who just put the stuff in my hair for me.

I did a clarifying shampoo for 20mins beforehand to get all the gunk out of my hair, I dried it (some salons do dry it others don't) then my friend put the stuff in my hair, left that in for 30mins, blow dried it.

Then she did the straightening it of it. 10 times each small section.

Probably could have been quicker however I was putting extensions in her hair inbetween doing mine, and having a couple of wines in there as well extended the time.

Left it for 3 days with intermittent straightening inbetween, washed it on the third day and voila!

I could have done it without my friends help no problem, howeve I wasn't sure on how long it would take and how tricky it would be.

Realistically I think I could have it done within 3 maybe 4 hours max just doing it by myself with no wine.

Looks great Jacks Mummy original.gif
A saw an advert at a local salon today, $350 for medium length hair, includes cut and aftercare (assuming shampoo/conditioner). Might pop in next time i'm passing. I had the bio ionic done a few times, last time almost 3 years ago. I have pacific island heritage, so quite frizzy and curly. I wouldn't mind the curls as much, as long as the frizz was gone.
It's either this treatment, or a GHD, as around the same price.
Will watch this thread with interest.

Would love to see more before/afters if possible.

My experience with the Keratin Sunliss DIY kit purchased off Sunliss website http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=6672...mp;l=a96882a60a

Washed my hair twice with shampoo, dried with blow dryer. Applied keratin treatment. Left it in for 15 mins, blow dried again, then ironed 8 or 9 times with 230 deg straighteners 20mm sections. Took around 1 1/2 hours from start to finish. My hair is/was baby fine/frizzy and weighs next to nothing so it was easy to do it myself. 70 hrs later I washed my hair and conditioned it with the sunliss products in the kit. I was pleasantly shocked, not one knot or tangle in my hair. Left it to air dry and I can even get a nit comb through it now (never thought that would be possible)

Note: During the application I wore a mask (taped on so I didnt have the straps over my head), swim goggles and ironed my hair by a door open to the outside with a fan blowing the vapors outside (I'm sorry I didn't get photos of that). The swim goggles had to come off occasionally so I could get to sections of my hair and the vapors did cause tears. Small price to pay for me.

I have enough left for 3 or 4 applications but almost out of shampoo and conditioner. You can buy SLS and sulphate free shampoos and conditioners from coles (Organix range). I have tried them and they do pretty much the same thing. I do like the sunliss mascara conditioner though.

I will never go curly again. It has been a life long battle against Bad Hair Days and I never, ever won. I never brushed or combed my curly hair except with a very wide tooth comb in the shower to massage 1/2 cup of thick, creamy conditioner through daily.

6 weeks later and my hair is still straight. The ends are starting to get a little 'shaggy' but I kinda like the look.
tedpos
I have also been looking into doing it myself (although I am hairdressing trained but that was many years ago now) and have asked a friend of mine from Mothers group who is a home hairdresser if she will help me and I will pay her a little and supply the products etc. She said she would love to. So next time we will be doing it together.

I had my follow up blow wave last week and OMG it looked so divine. I have never been able to have just a blow wave, always had it straightned. But we gave it a go and she even added flicks into the ends and OMG I am in love rolleyes.gif it was the hair I have always wanted. Nice shiny, soft non frizzy hair. The hair only movie stars seem to have. biggrin.gif

I have found I still have quite a few curls/waves but I love that as I can scrunch a small amount of mousee into it and leave it to dry and have waves biggrin.gif I am currently sitting here with my hair in a headband letting it dry naturally after washing it and putting in a vanilla bean deep conditioning treatment, then I am going to time myself straightnenening it, which I haven't done since having the keratin done. But I believe it should take me much less time to straighten now.

I say "Go for it, have it done" well worth the $$$$ in my opinion. My friend and I decided I would have it done in the salon first as they would do it 100% and then we can top it up when need be. Also my friend had just had a baby and is having a break.

I don't have before pics (which we had taken some) but I have very thick, long and very curly hair, lots of hair and takes forever to dry and straighten (that was before Keratin). biggrin.gif
KaroT
I'm not a big fan of chemical straightening because it can cause big damage in the hair, I prefer the flat iron or the blow dryer to straighten my hair. Now there are some flat irons that cause less damage to the hair than others and keep the hair healthy. I use one of these, it's the Karmin G3 Salon Pro and it keeps my hair healthy, smooth and straight, just the way I like. biggrin.gif original.gif
twilightangel
My mum had the kerratin done recently and it has ruined her hair unfortnately. She did everything the hairdresser told her too, brought the right shampoo and conditioner and once she washed it it was as frizzy as before but now it is so dry it is constantly snapping.

I had mine done a few months ago, happy with it but would not pay full price. Keep a eye on the spreets, scoopon, deal of the day type sites who often have the treatments heavily discounted.
