Hello there, Very new to this and dont even know if I am posting in the right area, apoligise if in wrong area. Would like to chat with anyone that has had problems with their kids and tonsills. I have a 3.5 year old son, who has had tonsillitis for the first time in Sept 07 he had a convulsion and was taken to hospital by ambulance and kept overnight for observation, his temperature was only 37.4 when he convulsed. Actually he didnt even feel hot just body felt clamy. He then got tonsillitis again on 2 Sept 09, 28 Sept 09, 26 Oct 09, 24 Nov 09, Jan 10 and has just been discharged from hospital with it again in Feb 10 after having 3 seizures, the first seizure he had while walking and fell to the ground on concrete and smashed his chin with his bottom teeth going through his lip, the second was as we were waiting for the ambulance to arrive temperature taken just before that was 37.1 and the last was in the ambulance as we were being transported to hospital. They did an ECG which came up clear, we have an EEG on March 8 said his tonsills looked a little swollen but nothing that needed antibiotics. Doctors are telling me that he isnt bad enough to have surgery here in Darwin. So what I am asking is if anyone has a similiar situation where their child has convulsed at a low temperature and willing to share their story and can anyone recommend a paedatric ENT or just an ENT in Melbourne as we are going to fly there and hopefully have the surgery. Thank you and sorry for being so long.

Sebby
I haven't been in a similar situation but just wanted to say I hope you get some answers. I've heard of kids having convulsions with very high temps but not with normal temps. Why do the docs think its related to tonsilitis? It seems odd that tonsilitis would cause convulsions like that? Sorry I'm no medical expert or anything, it just seems strange to me. Wishing you and your little boy all the best hhugs.gif

My DD had hers our at 3yrs, last year. I can recommend a great Peadiatric ENT in Adelaide if you are interested in coming to Adelaide at all?

Thanks for your replies.

The doctors agreed that he had tonsillitis which they just presumed brought on the fever as it had done in the past with with my son, i'm not sure if all tonsillitis comes with a fever though. And thats the worrying part he never has a high temp when he has them but his temp is still going up and then reaches 38+ I dont understand and thats why they want to do an EEG which is a brain scan.

Watching my son have a convulsion let alone 3 has freaked me right out and am now so paranoid i watch his every move and dont sleep well.

To ladybug, yes I would love your recommendation of the Adelaide ENT I have a friend in Adelaide that I could catch up with at the same time. How did the operation go for your daughter, did she have tonsillitis and thats why they were removed and how was her recovery? Thanks.

It is really scary to watch a child seizing! I also wonder about the fever; febrile convulsions run in my family and it is always, always with a high temp.
There are always risks associated with any kind of surgery. I had my tonsils out when I was 4, and I loved all the attention and icy poles and ice cream.
Good luck!

When my son was one he had tonsilitis really badly. He did have a fever slightly at the time and did have a convulsion. I was a little unsure of what was going on at first. The doctors and the nurse on call service assured ne that it was to do iwth his fever aswell. He hasn't had another tonsilitis attck as yet (it's been about 8 months now) and i haven't seen another convulsion. We also went to emergency for his and they said i was normal. Not sure if it is similar to what happened to you but I thought I would share my story...
