For the last 6-12 months I've been colouring my hair at the hairdressers as I've started to have some grey hair (yes, age does that)...but my hair is so long it costs a lot to have this done all the time.
Can anyone recommend a good hair colour you can buy from the chemist that colours grey and won't leave 'red' highlights. My hair's natural colour is a rich dark brown.
Thanks in advance.

The only home colour I like is L'oreal Casting Colour (though I use a blonde shade).
I think Nice n Easy is supposed to be good though for a permanent?

The Scwhartzkopf 10 minute ones are fantastic, and I'm also quite fond of the L'Oreal ones with highlights. As long as you avoid anything with "Golden" in the colour description, you should be ok with red highlights. Also, only go a single shade lighter than your natural colour, as anything lighter is more likely to add copper tones.
Good luck!

If you are just getting regrowth done at a salon for greys, then it shouldn't matter what length of hair you have - since they shouldn't be taking the colour all the way through (even if only using a semi permanent - certainly not every single time as the deposit on the ends of your hair will be heavier than the roots).
My hair used to be a medium brown, but due to all the colour I was having to put on the regrowth to cover the grey, my hair ended up a very, very dark brown. In the end, I was having to colour it every three weeks due to the greys being so prominent. In the end, I had my hair dresser take me to very light brown / blonde. It took six months until the colour was exactly the shade we wanted to achieve, but it's been worth it. I now only colour every 8-10 weeks and some of the more white area of my regrowth are being kept a little more natural since the blonde is blending with it.
FWIW, I'd stay away from home colouring - on dark hair, it always seems to be a lot warmer than having a salon job, therefore throwing more red (I tried every brand and always had this happen when I was dark - although my hair does tend to naturally throw gold).

This is the one I use. It is great. I have similar colour hair and use the chocolate or ice chocolate colour and am very happy with it. I also have (ahmmm) a bit of grey
