I'm interested to know about people's experiences of teeth whitening, the cheap options from the chemist and the more expensive dentist options. My teeth are really discoloured lately.

Has anyone used the cheap or expensive ones and what were the results like?

I used the proper dentist kit which cost about $500 from memory. The results were very noticeable and now I have the moulds I can just buy the bleach in future for a 'top-up'.

I have never heard anything good about the cheaper methods.

I ordered 2 boxes of Crest white strips advanced seal from Ebay (they are only sold in the USA) and the results were really great. People even commented on how white my teeth were. Drinking Diet Coke all the time had made my teeth really yellow to the point where I would never show my teeth in photos. Now I just grin all the time biggrin.gif

Highly recommend them!

Hi, I also got the molds done at my dentist.

I had one appointment to have the molds fitted (which was combined with my normal check up anyway) and then I just went and picked up the molds and bleach when it was ready.

I wore the molds on my teeth at night in bed. The first night they felt a bit weird but then I got used to it.

After one week my teeth were very white original.gif and they were quite discoloured to begin with from drinking heaps of tea.

That was nearly 3 years ago and it is only now that I am thinking I'll order some more bleach for a touch up.

It cost me $450 for the molds and bleach. Money well spent as I was very happy.

I personally would not bother with the chemist type products. I tried a few and then realised that each time I wasted $50 on one I could just put the money towards the "real deal".

Go for it! You won't regret it original.gif

good question OP

sorry this is slightly OT, but just wondering if you can use the dentist system when you are pregnant or breastfeeding??

thanks original.gif

Girk,

I don't think dentists recommend that you use any teeth bleaching (whether at home or dentist kits) whilst pregnant or breastfeeding.

Not because it has proven to be harmful but there has not been any testing to ensure that it is safe. So best to wait and be safe.

Crest Stips are great. They really make sure a difference but in my experience they only last a few months. My friend had Britesmile whitening at a dentist, and nearly two years later, her teeth are still pretty white. Don't know how much she paid though.

I had my teeth whitened at the dentist when I was 16wk pregnant...my dentist (who was also pregnant herself) said just to wait till the end of the first trimester
That was 4yrs ago and no problems!

That was 4yrs ago and no problems! the bleach they use doesnt get ingested, it only touches your teeth so it cant be absorbed, your gums are totally covered with special goop stuff

I went to the Dentist and got the teeth molds and bleaching kit as well. I really liked it and felt it made a nice difference to my teeth. It doesn't last though, I don't drink coke or red wine and only have 1 coffee and one tea a day, but I could do with a top up and it's only been 12 months. I have leftover gel in the fridge from the kit though so I can do a top up this year. I think I paid about $600

My sister did the Zoom whitening, paid nearly $2000 and admits that she would do the Dentist kit instead as hers hasn't lasted either and there is no option of just doing a top up.
I think going through a Dentist is a better idea than the cheapo strips/kits. They can take into acoount any issues you may have and pick a strength and regime to suit you. For example I have quite sensitive teeth so my kit had a lower strength gel that I was to use for an hour a night. It took longer, but my Dentist thought it would help to not hurt so much with my sensitivity.

I did it through the dentist 4 years ago, it lasted about a year, ( i don't smoke, but do drink an average amount ofcola and tea) but it was kind of painful, everytime i'd top up i'd have sensitive teeth of two days afterwards, like eating a cold ice cream and getting shooting pain, which wouldn't normally happen to me.

I still have the moulds, and even the gel in the fridge, but haven't gone near it in ages, i'm content with my slightly off coloured teeth these days, as i see bigger problems when i look in the mirror laugh.gif
