I want to curl my hair for NYE...I've used a curling wand before but the curls fall out pretty much as soon as the heat is off them unless i completely COAT my hair in hair spray.
Any tips of gadgets that might help me get a better curl without so much hair spray?
cheers!

i have pretty straight hair and find hot tongs dont do it!
I use rollers the night before and I have found some curling creams/gels work really well.
they go in like a gel and you scrunch the hair up and as it dries it curls the hair

Also dont have really 'clean' hair (dont wash it for a couple of days) as its harder to style..

I find NOT drying my hair first makes the curl last a day longer than if I do. Let it dry naturally then use tongs. Or you could let it mostly dry and then put it in curlers. Once the curls are done fix up the front bit if it's a bit ick and the curls will last ages. If I do it any other way I will literally lose the curls after an hour or two. I have very straight hair (very long and thick too, so heavy) and the curls will stay in without hairspray or product until my next hair wash if I do it those ways.

My hair's pretty bad, there are sections at the side of my head that won't take crimping irons (going back a while, naturally), hairdye (it takes but not as strong) or even perming solution (it came out slightly-wavy there instead of curly) but I've always had success with putting my hair in rags and sleeping on them. The same could probably be achieved with foam bendy rollers or hard rollers. Just make sure your hair is dry. If it's damp the dampness will stay and the wet hair will meaqn the curl faslls out

I have the exact same problem, a couple of things.....
*DO NOT HAVE CLEAN HAIR, products work better in hair that has a bit of grip iykwim
* make sure you use a product that is for heating and curling.
* Since tongs dont work for me the only way my hairdresser is able to curl my hair is with a HAIR STRAIGHTENER I know it sounds crazy but the trick is to put the straightener at the base of you hair and as you straighten turn the straightenerover onto you hair??? do you understand??? so that the hair that has not been straightened is laying ove the hair that has been through that heat.
AND if you have done it write will make a beautifull curl everytime. This was how my hairdresser had to do my hair for my wedding.
* and then have a setting product, find something not too heavy as that will just pull the curl down and it will fall out.
GOODLUCK, go to you local hairdresser if you have the money and buy the good products. If not woolies have a pretty good range too!
ETA: lorilees way will also work, that was the only other way of doing my hair but I couldnt sleep with them in. My hair also doesnt colour or perm..... they were very expensive lessons learnt LOL
