Ok there must be plenty of us! Girls with frizzy, wavy/curly, thick hair - or even just one of those.

I always straighten my hair, it's the only way I want to be seen in public! Although with summer around and so much swimming in the pool or beach I really can't be bothered straightening it every day, it takes forever and is way too hot. I also don't want to avoid swimming just because of my hair xmas_wacko.gif

So what are your tips for keeping your hair looking half decent in between straigtening?

I get fuzzies around the top of my head even with a ponytail so sometimes I just straighten the T-section, otherwise I leave conditioner in and have a bit of slick - if somewhat greasy looking - pony.

Anyone else have some suggestions??

Oh for naturally smooth hair......

I've spent the last 4 years growing my curly hair down to my bra strap. Just recently I bought a product called FOXY CURLS from Hairhouse Warehouse and it is fantastic. I have thick hair and live in a very humid climate so would friz galore.

But the other day I went to the hairdresser for a tidy up, and my hair ended up a disaster! So, we had to chop it off all short again cry1.gif It is now just below my ears and I have to straighten it everyday or I look all grandma-ish. It's a pretty cool choppy short cut though- I do like it alot (think Alice from Twilight). And maintenence time is similar because when it was long I had to 'do' it or get the friz thing happening.

Anyway, yer sorry off on tangent. Foxy Curls- great stuff.

I could have written your second paragraph word for word a couple of months back.

I'm with you in that it's too hot and takes too long to straighten - especially when I'm just as likely to end up swimming the next day or running through the fountain at the park with my toddler and ending up drenched.

So I just straighten the front part and then pull it back into a high or low pony. So the back is super curly and the front still looks smooth and tidy.

But I have found the most amazing product recently that might be of interest to my fellow thick haired/curly/fuzzy girls! It's a treatment called Action 2 Phases by a French company called La Biosthetique (they have a website here in Aus - labiosthetique.com.au). You can either have it done in salon with a wash / blow dry or buy the retail pack (which I did). Not cheap at $95 - but oh my gosh, the results. I have truly tried every brand - I even worked on the account for a large well known hair brand for years - so I have tried everything in the market. Most of them are purely cosmetic - as in they smell nice and they deposit a load of silicon on the hair - but aside from either weighing it down or making it oily - my fuzz was still there, and even with straightening - there were times when it really wasn't looking great (ie - summer).

But since using this treatment - not only has it improved the condition, but it makes it easier to straighten (and it lasts longer) and if I choose to wear it curly - the curl is much more pronounced and shaped - and I don't have to load it with product - which I hate doing. I've never had any treatment work so well before. My staff at the office immediately noticed how much sleeker my GHD'd hair looked - no longer that straight, slightly fuzzy look. I used it once per week for four weeks and now use it once every 3-4 weeks.

I can't rave about this enough!

peacefrog - I came here to learn tips more than to share, as I too struggle with my thick, frizzy hair that I feel only looks good when straight and/or smooth. I just hardly ever get time to straighten it anymore, though.... I have so much hair, it takes ages to straighten and blowdry.. and I just don't have much time anymore now that I have a baby and I'm working around 15 - 18 hours a week (from home when she sleeps).

My only advice is that when I keep my hair well moisturised, then I'm slightly happier with how it looks when it's au naturale - because when it's well moisturised, I at least have a it more definition to the wave/curl. I use Delorenzo The Ends a couple of times a week whenever the mid-lengths and ends are looking a litle parched.

I also try to take the attention away from the texture by having an eye-catching style. I usually always have a lot of height to my hair (it's backcombed to the extreme - think Amy Winehouse. No... not quite, but not that far off sometimes!). And I'm so used to styling my hair this way that it takes me no time at all.

... however, since I saw marleyandme's post, Im intrigued... I gotta try this Action 2 Phases!

Marleyandme, did you buy this treatment from a salon? I don't know of any salons that stock this brand... but a Google search might turn up somewhere where I can try online.

I'm not sure about you girls, but my thick, wavy, course hair usually drinks up even the heaviest, deepest treatments and almost asks for more. Action 2 Phases might hold the key... I hope so, 'cause I've tried just about everything else...

Hi Foggy,

I just checked out their website (http://labiosthetique.com.au) - they have a 'salon locator' button at the top. So just follow the prompts (Aus, State, Town) and it will show you to the closest one.

I'm such a huge fan of this one and have put lots of my frizzy, thick haired, curly girlfriends on to it.

best, M&M

Argh, no SA salons, just my luck! cry1.gif

Will do a bit more Googling, might still be able to buy online somewhere.

Thanks M&M original.gif

Hi,

Has anyone tried straightening their hair permanently. Also I am looking for a hair style to have my hair short but dont want to look like my mother and grandmother, any suggestions.

Have you thought about trying the new keratine hair-straightening technique? Apparently 1 application lasts for months. Havent tried it myself but I am curious wink.gif

I've permanently straightened mine before. I had the Bio Ionic treatment. I wouldn't do it again. My hair ended up looking really fried and was ice pick straight - it just didn't look natural enough for my liking. I know of friends who had a great result with this - but you really need to ensure that the technician is amazing at doing it. I had it done twice and the second time had my hair breaking off at mid length. I had to end up getting it cut into a really short bob and it just looked dreadful for months.

I spoke to my hair dresser about Global Keratin and he called them about it for me. As my hair has highlights, they advised against the straightening process but said I could just have the treatment. But my hairdresser felt that I'd get the same result that I do from Action 2 Phases - so I'm just going to stick with that. At least now when I GHD it myself, it looks sleek and healthy - not fried and ice pick looking.

Ive got very thick curly hair and recently had the coppola Keratin treatment done on it
Yes it was expensive $500 (shoulder length thick hair) but it lasts up to 6mths (washes out as opposed to haveing to grown chemical straightened hair out)
What can I say - WOW
My hair is very soft and smooth
I am able to quickly blast it with the hair dryer to dry it and then run my straighteners over it, takes me about 20mins all up, and I used to sit in the salon for an hour for the hairdresser to do it and even then it would kink the next day
The CKT takes 90% of the frizz out of your hair, it doesnt straighten it, but definitely my hair is less thickly curled
I was in Singapore last week and my hair didnt frizz or curl up once no way would it have been like this before the CKT
When I go swimming I just put on a swim cap, the bits that might get a bit damp and got a bit curly I just run over with the straighteners

For me its been worth every penny spent as Id spend $40 a fortnight anyway going to the hairdressers

Plus I dont use any product in my hair now except for the Coppola shampoo and conditioner, so no product build up

Another frizzy miss here  sad.gif

I went in and enquired about the Keratin treatment, but was slightly horrified by the price.  $500 for 6 months is not something our family could ever justify especially with a new baby on the way (although...hmmm...the baby bonus...no stop it (smacks face)

I use Paul Mitchells Skinny hair, and also Toni and Guy smoothing serum.

Both these are still silicone based, but at least they aren't so heavy that a slight miscalculation of drops looks like an Exxon tanker leaked on your head.

Do let us know if you find a miracle product, especially if it doesn't require a second mortgage to try

try having a look at the forum
naturallycurly.com
it has a method of washing your hair using products that contain no silicons or similar type of chemicals...and lots of info on how to look after curly or frizzy hair
deedee15
The Keratin treatments aren't recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to the fumes and such. I also have wild curly/frizzy hair, and was hoping this would help, but with a price tag of $800 for something that will start to wash out after 3 months, it has been crossed off my list, plus am breastfeed DS.
I have been recommended the Matrix Opti-smooth, which is supposed to be permanent and cheaper, so will see how I go finding somewhere that does it

Girls, has anyone here tried Moroccan Oil?

I just off the phone from a new hairdresser that a friend has recommended me to. She is a specialist cutter - I saw the extraordinary hair cut she gave a friend of mine, and I called and made an appt straight away.

When I made the appt we chatted on the phone about my coarse, frizzy hair, long, dry - she is promising she can give me a cut that lets me get the most out of the natural wave/curl and then I'll have the choice as to whether to straighten after washing or not. This is ideal for me - I want to have options! I don't feel like I have options at the moment other than spending hours straightening because I have such a yucky wave/frizz. I've been a slave to the hairdryer for years and I am totally sick of it.

She has asked me to come with my hair in its natural state. I very, very rarely leave the house with my hair simply washed and dried. It is horrible!! This will be interesting...

She mentioned Moroccan Oil when I made the appointment, and said she's really impressed by it. It's a new product on the market, and it's more of a treatment than a styling product. She said over time, you need less and less of it.

I had actually seen it at another salon I had been to... but the price turned me off (around $42 per bottle). But this new hairdresser has told me she thinks the bottle will last me more than a year and will improve the quality of my hair out of sight.

Well - my appt is for tomorrow and I can't wait to see what she does with my hair. I might take a before and after shot!

I'll report back in case there are any other ladies here who are sick of straightening too. Maybe we can unite and embrace the frizz!

Happy Dance
