Another thread on EB has made me consider making our own dog food rather than spending what we do on commercial food. We have a labrador who if we let her would eat non stop LOL!

Does anyone make their own dog food? What recipe do you use? Does it work out cheaper? How much do you give?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thankyou

A popular one is pet mince, mixed frozen veges, rice or pasta all stewed together (some people add a scoop of gravy powder to the mix)

I would look at this thread http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=172826 as I think you have to be careful to make sure you are getting the balance of nutrients right.

In saying that a home made doggy stew (like the one above) with a regular raw meaty bone and a small amount of premium dry food would be good.

My dogs get a chicken wing daily with a cup of Artemis or Advance dry food, twice a week get a scoop or 2 of yoghurt and once a week I put half a tin of sardines over their dry food. I tried making "doggy stew" and my guys didnt like it and it was a pain in the bum to cook LOL

We have a shar pei (so he'd eat a little less than your lab I imagine, being a bit smaller!) and he has some major skin issues if we feed him commercial dog food, so this is what I make up for him :

1kg chicken/turkey mince (or diced chicken thighs if I cna't get the mince)
1 pkt of vegeroni
1 cup of rice
2 cups of rolled oats

Place into large microwave dish, fill with water, cook on high for about 20 minutes until it is all cooked and "sets" into a meatloaf type consistency.

I then break it up into meal-sized portions and freeze them individually, and serve the food with a 1-2 cups of dry food underneath.

I'd say it costs us about $10 to make, and lasts about 8-10 feeds (depending on quantities I use - it changes a bit) which works out less than $1 a feed, and I know he's getting good, quality food that will not make his skin flare up.

I have tried.. but I have some tins in the cupboard for when I get lazy. blush.gif

I use chicken necks, pet mince, peas, rice and carrots and throw them all in together and give it a bit of a mix.

You can cook it, like simmer it, but I think my puppies prefer it to be raw.

Mum used to make it up with either pet mince or Kangaroo meat which the dogs loved. Added heaps of vegies and pasta or rice to bulk it out and sometime gravy sometimes not. Each batch was different as she would use whatever we had left over. original.gif
