It is my turn to choose the book for my bookclub this month and I am a bit stuck for ideas. Usually I have quite a few books that I am dying to read but I have been busy lately.
We have been together for the last 6 years so have read over 70+ books and read all sorts of genres.
I am after something to generate good discussion ie: controversial/intriguing topic or character, a real page turner or even something hilarious.
If it helps some of our favourites over the years have been: Perfume by Patrick Suskind, Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, The Great Gatsby by F. Fitzgerald, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime by Mark Haddon, The Davinci Code by Dan Brown, The Other Boelyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory......
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

We have definately had a controversial book in our bookclub recently. it is very well crafted and an intriguing read but does have some potentially upsetting content,s o only you could know whether it was suited to your group.
The Author is Carol Topolski. Here is a brief from the penguin site:
Monster Love
Author: Topolski Carol
Brendan and Sherilyn. A young couple in love. Each has met their soul mate, and nothing can come between them.
In fact, the Gutteridges are so wrapped in each other that their neighbours barely know them, despite the woman next door's nosy curiosity. Their families and their work colleagues see only the perfect couple in the perfect home, the perfect car crouching in the drive.
And then a baby is born – contaminating this pristine life in which there is only room for two. But they find the ideal solution.
What may be one couple's happy ending is everyone else's indescribable nightmare...
Told through the Gutteridges' voices, and those of their families, neighbours, and those who will come across them in the aftermath, this perverse love story hurtles to the heart of evil – the evil that could be anyone's next door neighbour.
As I said a well crafted story, one that I couldn't put down, but one that i also found slightly disturbing.
Another fav in our group is "the Book Thief" quite long but one that has oft been discussed and is much loved among our members.
Good luck with your selection.
Oh just remembered another GREAT read - The Thirteenth tale. What a fantastic book. This was a definate hit with our group. Lots to discuss. Also saw PP mentioned the disapearence of Esme Lennox. I personally enjoyed this book, and we had lots of lively discussion about the ending! Happy reading.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies.
We have read most on that list too Kazbaby
Tomkatsmum - The disappeance of Esme Lennox was the first book of this year that I missed while OS

Monster Love sounds interesting but since having kids of my own I don't do well with any books about sick/dying children
The Thirteenth Tale sounds great. I am now trying to source copies in our small Hick town.
