I was just wondering if there were any Yoga classes in Canberra or any other form of exersice that i could do.

We are TTC # 2 ATM and with #1 i had really bad back pain an sciatica. I still have really bad back pain even though im not pregnant. I want to do some form of exercise before and during the pregnancy to strengthen my back muscles.

Any suggestions would be great! wink.gif

Hi Blades_mummy,

There are definately Yoga classes in Canberra, not sure of the details but if you look it up on the yellow pages website there should be some listed. Some places even do special pregnancy classes, so if you joined to a place that did then you could just switch when you become pregnant. I think TCH even has info on a pregnany yoga. I was going to go when I was pregnant but never got around to it.

Have you also looked at going to a Chiropractor or Osteopath or even a crainial osteopath to get help for your back? If you are still in pain surely that is a sign that there is still somehing going on that needs to get fixed. IMO anyway.

Hope this helps

Emma

Pilates! If you have back pain and are looking for something to strengthen your back muscles, then you really need to look at strengthening what is called your 'core' - the muscles around your stomach and the inner abdominal muscles. Pilates focusses on these very muscles, and will help you with correct posture for standing, lifting etc. Mat/floor-based Pilates is especially good for bad/weak backs (I know because I have a weak lower back!). You can find classes in gyms (I attend ones at the Active Leisure Centre in Erindale where I am a member), or I think I've seen some advertised in the adult-education classes run at colleges, and some privately run ones too I guess. Do a yellow pages or internet based search and that should provide some help if you're still stuck. Good Luck!

There's a place called Vital Yoga in Gledden Street, Chifley that's great, although they don't do pregnancy yoga. Pam runs the yoga studio downstairs at her home, which means class sizes are quite small. I think it's $12 per class, check the White Pages for her phone number.

You can also do pregnancy yoga in Pearce and Hackett, but I've lost the phone numbers. I know people going to both classes, and I'm told they're really good.

The Pearce community centre runs Antenatal yoga classes. I was given the information by the Antenatal clinic at TCH. I no longer have the flyer but I am sure if you call the AC they will be able to give you the number.

Where are you?
Om Shanti in Griffith does a few different yoga classes, including pre-natal. There's also a lovely Tuesday night yoga class in Weston Creek.

Yoga is as good for core strength as pilates and better for a few other things (learning to quiet the inner voice... not to mention taking out "me" time from the baby...)

The pre-natal classes at Pearce are run by the South Canberra Yoga School - Julia Willoughby is the teacher. PM me if you want her phone number. The next term will start at the beginning of Feb so if you get a BFP soon it would be great timing for you!

HI,

I am in Chisholm.
Pilates sounds like the way to go. Chiropractor wouldnt do me anygood as its not my bones just my muscles. I also suffer from poor posture and have done for many years.

How far away is Pearce? WOden area?

Is it on a sunday or something or different nights because i work and my shifts vary from week to week.
Sometimes i do day shifts that run into the night and sometimes just day shifts.

So hard to have a life LOL.
