We have an appointment in Canberra for 1 day, but after that we are going to stay there for 3 days. What can we do in canberra, that will be enjoyable for the whole bunch, but not too tiring for the little man? I will bring my husband, and my son of 29 mos.
I am not looking for shopping this time, just would like to have a feel about the place. Kind of activities that we are after, e.g: picnicking in the park with swings, slippery deep, etc, visiting places (not museum or parliament house)like zoo or places with animals.
What activities do you usually do in the weekend with your family?
Please help me Canberrians...
Thanks a lot.

The zoo is a good place to go, but you have to drive there, there isn't a bus.
Not far from the zoo is Weston Park in Yarralumla. It's a nice place to wander in and there's a cafe/kiosk, plus a little railway and a maze.
There's a dinosaur exhibition and a miniature village at Gold Creek, I think your DS might be old enough to enjoy those and they're interesting for grown-ups too.
But as for what I do at weekends? Housework and shopping like everyone else I suspect!

As a SAHM the weekends are not for housework if I can help it so we get out and about with our 18mo DS. Here are some places we've been to or are planning to now that the weather is warming up.
You could try the Cotter Playground and picnic area for starters. There are lovely walks around this area too. There is another picnic area just up the road (before the bridge, back up the hill - the turn off is to the right on a sharpish bend if you're coming downhill). This has great swimming but you would need to keep an eye on your child as the current can be strong and the floor is a little rocky.
C*ckington Green out near Hall is a great place for adults and children alike. They have a motorised mini train that all can go on that takes you around.
The National Zoo and Aquarium (http://www.zooquarium.com.au/) is another fun place to go. There's plenty to see and the walking is pretty easy (I think it's okay for strollers if this is what you'll have with you).
If you and DH want somewhere to go to for a meal, there's the Hellenic Club in Woden. There is a playroom for the children and they are watched by a staff member or two at all times. I'm not sure of the times this room is operating but worth contacting the club if you're interested.
There's stacks more I could suggest but I won't snowball you with all this information. If there is anything more specific then let us know and no doubt someone will have the info.
BTW - whereabouts (suburb-wise) will you be staying? If we know that then we could give you ideas of how close or far each suggestion would be for you.
HTH.
Helen.

Hi,
have you thought about questacon, they now have an area specific for littlies that is supposed to be awesome. I haven't gone to that part yet as I think my DS is a little young yet (7 1/2 weeks), but I know lots of people who have.

Thanks for all the info.
We are staying in Wamangaratta, or something like that...lol...
I just need something relaxing, entertaining, fun, and not too expensive.
I will pass this on to DH. I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks again for your help.

Sounds like either Weetangera or Waramanga.
Waramanga would put you closer to the zoo and Weston Park.
Helen, sorry if I offended you, just that most people I know do end up doing shopping and housework at the weekends...

Julie, you didn't offend me at all - I just do my housework during the week because DH is at work and not underfoot, lol. I can cope with doing the housework when only DS is around as I can move him out of the way much easier than moving my DH.

Indomum, it sounds like you're probably staying in Waramanga, which (as Julie says) is close to the zoo and aquarium, along with all the spots I mentioned down the Cotter region.
