Hi everyone,

I know this is more a topic for "managing money" but wanted some specifically Canberra-based advice.

Where do you like to shop to get good discounts? I suppose I'm thinking particularly of meat and fruit and vegetables, but other grocery items too.

Does anyone know of any fruit and veg markets that are cheap and/or home deliver? I'd love to think I'd get to Fyshwick markets each week but it just doesn't happen.

Any cheap places for meat, or to bulk buy goods?

Thanks for your help!

Depends on which side of town you are on.....

Belco or Fyshwick markets are great for fruit and veg.....meat/seafood....

But you have to weigh up how much petrol you are spending!!

We have High Country Meats here in Lanyon now...they are good, but I often just buy bulk from Woolies or the Lanyon Vally Meat butcher.....

Aldi is good for basics as well.....

I find that 'Simply Fresh' at Woden is a good place for cheap fruit/veg. Probably not as cheap as Belco/Fyshwick markets, but more likely to happen.
I do buy my flour and beans/pulses from the health food shop at Belconnen markets. That only requires a trip once a month.

We've recently blitzed our way of shopping for groceries as our CC was spiralling out of control.

I only buy the basics at Coles. Can't justify a trip to Queanbeyan/Tuggeranong for Aldi with petrol prices. But soon we'll have our own at Kippax and Gunghalin YAY!!!

I get my meat at either High Country Meats or on special at Coles/Wollies. I tend to buy up big when things are cheap and store them in the deep freezer.

For fruit and veg I go to the Belco markets. It is roughly half price of what C/W charge! You can get loaves of bread for $1, eggs $1. Most things if you shop around are about 99c a kilo. But only each shop will have one thing at that price. So take cash and just buy the cheap things at each shop. So I have cut our bill from $125 a week to $90 original.gif

I agree with Sarah about Coles Fresh Friday too. You can grab some great buys then.

Anyone else have some good ideas?

We split our shopping between Aldi, Coles, and either the Farmers Markets or Fyshwick markets.

We buy most products from coles but buy basics from aldi. We also buy most of our meat from aldi (although if we were staying here; we would go to the wholesale place in Fyshwick (near the roundabout).

We go to the farmers markets for some of our vegies and if they don't have them, then we go and get the rest from Fyshwick markets. I have no idea how much a fortnightly shop costs us cause we always forget things.

For shampoo, conditioner and washing powder, we buy it all in bulk from Big W.

I am going to miss Aldi when we go to Darwin.

Thanks

I go to Coles for the basics, but fruit, vegies, bread, milk and eggs i go to the Belconnen Fruit markets, meat usually stock up at high country meats.
Can't wait till we get Aldi out here at Gunghalin.

Belconnen markets for fruit and veg, and mikes meats at d*ckson has 30% off all frozen stock. They are cheaper anyway, but that extra 30% make a big difference.

When Aldi eventualy goes in, all surounding stores drop their prices as a result. Apart from that read your junk mail. Occasionally the reject shop, clints, an go lo have specials on end of line things.

Cheers

Wow - I never knew that - is that all the time? And where's the frozen stock - is it in the back room? That would make it worth dh picking up the meat shopping when he does the banking at d*ckson.

Thanks,

Kristen

Thanks everyone for those ideas.

I know I really should get to fyshwick markets but don't seem to have the time. we live in Kambah. We shop a little bit at Mother Nature's at Tuggeranong. The bread is really cheap and the f&v are cheaper too but we've been disappointed with the quality sometimes.

I thought the 30% off at Mike's meats for frozen stuff sounded good too, although i guess the trick would be getting it home still frozen! Are there any Mike's meats southside?

I think there's a high country meats at Phillip?

Where's farmer's market?

I'll have to check out Coles on Fridays. i do most of my basics there but never on a friday.

Thanks again!

Kate.

Farmers Maket is on at Exhibition Park. It is great if you are into organic fruit and veg. But to be honest I found it really expensive. Esp. compared to the markets. We went once and that's it.

I don't remember if anyone mentioned the Trash & Treasure Markets at Jamison shops. They are on a Sunday morning and cost 20c to get in. They have excellent fresh fruit and veg stall holders. Not the cheapest but not too bad.

High Country meats is at Phillip near the KFC and JB centre. They regularly have excellent prices and then you can get it reduced as well. Very cheap original.gif

On the subject of reducing grocery bills...

For those organic shoppers, what organic fruit and veges (in your opinion) are a must? I mean if you wanted to reduce costs by only buying 3-4 types of organic fruit/veg what would they be?

From what I've heard/read...root vegetables (particularly carrots) absorb pesticides more than say cabbage/bananas etc...anyone got any advice?

Thank you original.gif

Waynes World of meat has great packs they range from $55-155 and you get heaps of meat plus roasts. Or you can go to lenards Chicken who also have packs They range from about $60-90. I get my basics from coles and get my fruit and veg from simply fresh in woden. We use to spend $300 a Fortnight we now spend the same amount for the 5 of us.

Mike's Meats at d*ckson has closed down.
Due to cost of tradesmen and staff they said.

I've been told that a lot of pesticide is used to grow broccoli, so if you can't afford organic (organic broccoli is quite expensive) then make sure you wash it really well.

You could also consider growing just 2-3 different vegies each season that you'd use lots of and are easy. For example, tomato and lettuce and strawberries in summer - you can save a bit of money on buying something you use lots of, it will taste better, and you can call it an educational experience for the kids. Plus it's really annoying when I'm craving salad the day before shopping day and the last of the lettuce is wilted.
