HI, Im just posting this as im a little confused just want piece of mind really.
Last night DP DD and I went to the monster trucks, it was quite crowded but stiil plenty of room for everyone, and there was no seating there so we all brought rugs or chairs to sit on. we were sitting on a rug and after one of the breaks, this lady and her friend came and sat right next to us, and partly on our rug, this was fine, but then she started smoking, (she was so close her legs were touching mine.)
she held the cigarette right in front of her allowing it to blow right in my face and sleeping DD,as a non smoker i was deeply offended and it was horrible to breath, so i asked her if she could not smoke right there, she got really cranky at me and looked at me like as if to say 'are you kidding!' and just moved it to the other hand(this did help) but was I in the wrong for asking, her reaction just made me feel like i was.

I don;t think you were, esp if she was in your "personal space" and with your DD there, good on you for speaking up!

Hi Lexi's Mum,
I'd have done the exact same thing as you - except I might have even told her off after she moved it to the other hand!
I used to smoke so It's not that I have anything personally against smokers. It's just that we are the only ones who can speak up for our kids and If we do not like the smell, I can not imagine they would - not to mention the health risks!
My sis smokes - and if she has had a ciggarette, I will not let her hold Ayden.
I am sorry if this offends some but I do believe that *some* smokers are very inconsiderate to others when they are smoking in public.
I say good on you for sticking up for your daughters need for clean air!

Some people are sooo rude and inconsiderate!! I'm on your side, that woman had no right to smoke that close to your bub, let alone yourself. Good on you for sticking up for yourself!

I think you did the right things too. Stuff what she thought. I would have done the same thing, my DP would have kept at her until she left!

Nope, you were in the right. She had no right to light up around you and your DD. Good on you for sticking up for yourself. I just find it funny how that lady will be saying to all her friends "oh this rude lady at the monster trucks asked me not to smoke near her DD oh how rude", not "Geez I am an idiot smoking around kids" lol.

Yep, you did the right thing.
But I'm really happy that so many people would have done the same thing. DP gets really grumpy at smokers near us. i.e those smoking at the doors of the hyperdome in the undercover parking enterance.

I cannot believe she thought she was in the right!! smoking in a crowd of people is disgusting, especially if there are children around. My DH smokes on occassion and would never do it around children or in a confined space like that. how revolting, good on you!

Thankyou everyone, im so glad to hear, ive been thinking about it all night, sounds silly i no.
I too dont have anything against smokers, I just feel that that was a bit rude as how close she was. She did have older children of her own and so I think she thought i was being an over protective parent, but i thought that wasnt the point, esp as she came and sat with us.If we went and sat near her then i feel it would be diff.
hope any people out there dont think im having a go at all smokers either, because that doesnt bother me, its a smokers choice to smoke, but i just thought this circumstance was going a bit far.
thanks again for making me feel better about sticking up for my family.

Of course you were in the right!
I was amazed by how many people there were smoking at the Monster Truck thing last night. We don't go many places where smoking's permitted, so I suppose I forget how many people still do smoke.
I found it really foul, particularly having to stand next to people that were smoking in the toilet queues.
Absolutely their right to do so, but I just found the smell really off-putting, and if any of the children had been with me in the loo queue I would've made sure they were upwind or a good distance away.
