Have you had a twin pregnancy where one twin tended to sit behind the other so during scans you couldn't see the other baby?

I only ask because my midwife is wondering if I have twins. I am highly doubtful myself. I have had 2 scans now, surely a baby can't hide that long, can it?

She thinks I look pg with twins and I am measuring at 35 weeks when I am really only 26 wks.

So, until I get my U/S to see what's going on with my tummy size, I thought I'd ask around and see if it's at all possible that there could really be 2 there?

Suppose it could happen - but I'd say with today's technology its unlikely.

My twins were picked up by a scan at 6 weeks and also very easily at every other scan thereafter.

Although there could be other reasons why you are measuring so large and these should probably be investigated further.

Cheers

How far along were you when you had your scans?

Being larger (by that much) is sometimes a sign but can be related to other things as well (eg how much fluid you're carrying).

I really can't see that happening to be honest! When I had my scans, even at 18 weeks all you saw were arms & legs, feet & hands. I can't see how a sonographer could possibly miss that.

I don't see HOW people can say "one hiding behind the other" when you can clearly see on the screen they move EVERYWHERE. Mine were very active & it was hard for the sonographer to keep track of which baby they were trying to measure.

I have uterine fibroids and my fundal height has have measured 6 week+ over my dates.

If you had a 12 week or 20 week scan I dont see how a scan tech could miss baby number 2

Good to hear. I am/was in NO way prepared to handle twins

My scans have been at 12wks and 19wks. I don't really remember much of the 12wks one but when I had the scan at 19wks my baby was not wriggling around etc so I guess they thought if there was 2 in there, one could have been "hiding" (since there wasn't limbs going every which way)

I dunno, everything looked A-OK 7 weeks ago at that scan, baby was spot on for dates too

Thanks for your thoughts

I think it's highly doubtful although stranger things have happened laughing2.gif.

At 7w5d I picked it was twins right away. At 12w they were very obvious and at 19w they spent the whole scan kicking and punching each other - definitely could not have missed the second baby.

By 26 weeks where you are now I could easily distinguish two sets of arms and legs, and two heads just by movement (although I couldn't always place which legs / arms went with which head lol).

But wouldn't that mean that not one but 2 babies were very still & not moving? I'm not having a go at you, but honestly 2 babies would be hard to miss. IF it was missed at 19 weeks I would hope the sonographer got the sack biggrin.gif

I must say that all my twin scans showed very obvious twins. 7 weeks there were clearly two sacs, 12 weeks I have video of both babies dancing everywhere, and 19 weeks there was no missing two babies.

My last pg started out as twins and two sacs were visable, however one didn't continue to develop sad.gif

It is possible to just measure big.

Although they should check fluid levels with the scan.

My last pg I was 31 weeks pg (singleton) and measuring 42 weeks blink.gif blink.gif

And I had normal fluid levels....

Oh, goodness, you and me both!

Anyway, you ladies have reassured me enough to stop stressing and just wait it out until I eventually get another scan or an answer as to why I'm measuring so big.

Thanks wub.gif

I know of someone who thought she was carrying triplets until the c/s when the delivering doc realised there was a 4th baby!! 20+ ultrasounds, and they missed the 4th baby every time. Highly unsusual, but I guess it shows it can happen.... (This happened at the Mater in Brisbane).

I didn't know I was having twins until my 3rd scan - however the first one was at 7 weeks and the second scan was just a mini one in the Obs office... still quite a shock at the 13 week scan. I can't see how they could have missed them by that stage with the proper equipment though! original.gif

I think it possibly more likely with HOM to miss one as you don't really get a look at the whole uterus when you have a scan, so once you count to 3 you probably can't be sure where you started.

But it I have heard of it, from people years ago, but I think the ultrasound technology is so much better now it seems really unlikely.

Haha.. no I think your ok - I was huge with both my kids (singletons) in fact so big with DD that a Mum of twins from DC thought I was carrying two!!

But just huge...
