What are your opinions on the name Fergus? I love the name, just wondering what the main consensus is out in the real world

It would be 'Gus' for nn.

I really dislike this name! Makes me think of a dog (I don't know why, but that is what immediately comes to mind)!
What about Angus instead?

Funny you should say that Lochsman, I told DH that if we didn't have anymore children I would love to get my black labrador and call him 'Fergus'
Our 2nd son is Kellan Angus MacGregor so unfortunately I cannot have that name, I have thought about using it again though but thought that might seem a bit weird

I was named my sisters middle name, Dad liked it so much that he named me before Mum woke up from the labour! She used to joke about how they loved her so much they named me after her but really it wasn't an issue.
I like Fergus and Angus with nn Gus.

All my boys have 2 middle names, Bryden Alexander MacGregor, Kellan Angus MacGregor and of course Thayne Alaister MacGregor our last name is a horrid 5 letter Scottish name BLAHHH

which makes it really hard to put names with
I love names like Tadhg or Tighe and Saige for a little girl, when I put these names with our last name it sounds like I am saying a tongue twister
Fergus _______ MacGregor

Absolutely love it, especially teamed with other good Scottish names.
We tossed around Fergus for DS2, but went with Angus instead.
Funnily enough I swore I'd never call Angus, 'Gus' as a nickname, but that is the nickname he has ended up with, and I really like it!

OH MY K a woman after my own heart for baby names

Maeve will be our daughters name should we be so lucky
K how do the majority of people react to your names? I love them, is Fionnlagh pronounced Fin - lay?
Fionn is another name that we love as well, I love Celtic names, Kellan and Thayne's names are fighting names, so with Fergus meaning 'Man Strength' maybe this won't be a good name for our family, there will be no peace and quiet with them all fighting like little warriors

Luuuuurve it.
Our Phoebe was going to be a Fergus if she was a boy.
I quite liked "Fergs" for a nn.

Another one I've seen pop up around here is Magnus too.

I think maybe just go for Gus instead. I knew a Fergus who was teased and taunted his whole life. Kids are cruel, my name is Kellie and I was teased endlessly throughout Primary School which had a massive impact on my work and my ability to befriend others. Please, consider the opinions of others, in particular school children, who can be very, very nasty

The name I was given has made me the person I am today and has had a great influence in the path I have taken....

I like Fergus and I adore Gus-I was toying with the idea of August nn Gus but it doesn't sound good with our surname.

I have just read through this thread and I adore your kids names OP.

Why would you get teased for being named Kellie?
newkie
28/04/2008, 10:41 PM
That baffles me also. The only teasing name I can think of is maybe Smelly Kellie? If that is the sort of thing that scarred you for life, then...
For the record I absolutely adore the name Fergus and plan to potentially use it for a boy if we have another
jaismum
28/04/2008, 11:08 PM
Yeah it was Smelly Kellie, but when your 10 years old, words hurt. Let alone the fact I went to a school with barely 20 students in my "grade" and was physically bullied by some because I was alienated. I was just using myself as an example, and if you want to comment that "if that scarred you for life" then you really need to get a heart yourself. I'm not saying that I feel sorry for myself everyday, I'm saying any kind of bullying does impact who you are or how you see yourself for the remainder of your life. Will stick to the more pleasant threads in the future...
