Hi ladies

Just wondering if those of you who shop (my shopping is restricted to Woolies and Bunnings!) would know of any stores that stock Doc Martens at a 'reasonable' price....

I know that they are pricey (but long lasting) and I think there is a shop just outside the Canberra Centre that sells them for a totally inflated price.

I am after a pair of navy or black docs....not the boot, just the shoe! For my new Nursing career. I figure that I need a shoe that will last and be comfy etc...

Any ideas?

And has anyone ever bought anything at that 'uniform' shop in London Circ? Are the prices ridiculous or is it worth paying for cos of quality? Need new (navy..lol) duds........Want something easy to wash, no iron, no fade, comfy, easy to bend and move in....polycotton!

Arrrrgh I have a few weeks to suss all this out, but advice would be great

In my previous life as a nurse I wore Birkenstocks. You can get the full covered shoe in navy leather and they are pricey but so comfortable when you are on your feet for as long as nurses are :-)

I've worn docs as a teenagers but birks are a heap more comfy. There is a birkenstock store in civic

Claire thanks for the Birkenstocks option.....I just know that my legs get sore if I have the wrong shoe!! And of course I need the full leather enclosed deal....no doubt looking sexy, but all the old guys in the nursing home will think I am 'the business' LMAO

The shop you are thinking of is called Redpaths, or at least it use to be, just outside civic center (garema place bit). Yep their prices are pretty high but when I needed a new pair (about a year ago) I had a good shop around and Redpaths unfortunatly was pretty much the same as else where!

I ended up getting the in laws to bring me over a pair when they came to visit (they live in england). It worked out at about half the price!

Doc's are so comfy but hey if Claire is saying the other type then I would give them a go. When you are on your feet all day you need the comfy factor not to mention the protection!

I worked in a residential (old aged) home for 2 years while I lived in England and loved it to bits. It was kinda like having 22 grandmothers and 6 grandads. They where like my second family, even to the point where I went there straight after the wedding (before the reception) so that they could see me in my dress.

Hmmmmmmm very hard to leave and I often think of them all. Lol I am sure you needed to know all that

It might be worth having a look at Seaars in Fyshwick too.

My mum buys some sort of walking shoes from Myer. They are about $80/pair but she uses them when she and dad go away.

If you are interested, i'll ask her what they are called and let you know.

I bought a pair of Docs from the FSW (Fashion Shoe Warehouse) next to Spotlight in Queanbeyan - although it was over a year ago. They have a thick sole and no laces - just a buckle over the front of the foot. It might be worth checking out the FSW stores to see if there is anything available. Another option is Rockport shoes - apparently extremely comfy but expensive. I think the major department stores sell them, as well as shoe stores. I have seen them cheap here - http://www.sierratradingpost.com/ - and they ship them internationally - just search for "rockport" (I have actually been on that site looking for snow gear for kids - pondering whether to put in an order or not!).

Thanks ladies for all the fabulous suggestions....Alex I might PM you re your work in the Nursing Home....it brought tears to my eyes when you said you went to show them your wedding dress...they would have LOVED that and it would have meant soooo much to them!

Having a look at the Birkenstocks (and I think they are the way to go) I am looking at about $200+...ouch...but worth it if I am on my feet all day.

birks are brilliant rach you can buy them cheaper on ebay US but i recommend at least going to the store to be fitted for them as there are different sizes / widths / styles.
