WDYT of Ayla for a girl?
I have loved it ever since I read the Clan of the Cave bear books but I'm not quite sure.

I LOVE it!! But then I am a huge fan of the books. I think it is a strong, feminine name for a girl.

Isla is a great suggestion. Much, much better.

I LOVE it

It's quite close to the name I have picked out for a girl if I ever have one. I just think it's beautiful. I like Isla too but TBH I like Ayla better. I guess it's just your individual likes. If you like it that's all that matters.

A friend on a US message board just used this for her little girl. She wanted to use Isla, but decided that Americans would butcher the pronounciation, so she went with Ayla to make it easier for everybody

She's originally from Scotland

My friend named her baby Ayla and gets lots of comments on how beautiful it is.
I really like it, sometimes i do think it sounds as if she missed a letter though. Sorry, not meaning to be rude.

I love this name too. But I already had Ella so I thought Ella and Ayla night be a bit too much.
I hadn't heard it when I had Ella otherwise she might have been Ayla.

Absolutely beautiful, Clare. A cousin in our extended family named her first daughter Ayla - thought of Clan Of The Cave Bear straight away! Great name.
Would've had it ourselves, but we chose something similar anyway: Alina. Funny, because, Will's name, if a girl, was going to be Isla!
ETA: I worked with a Kiwi girl named, "Aylin" - pretty as well I think.

One of the ladies in my due in group in Dec 06 named her daughter Ayla
I think I would actually like it more if I hadn't read the books. It seems to contrived otherwise

I like it - I thought of the books immediately too, but she's such a strong character that it works.

LOVE the name...
only thing is she may grow up with a bit of pressure to be fantastic with a sling, skin animals, tan hides, weave baskets and make serviceable tools from flint...
Be a reknowned naturopah, own a pet lion, invent a bra, a new sewing device, and some kind of missile launcher...
Kust kidding!!!
LOVE the name and the books!

How would you pronounce Ayla? Because in my head Ayla and Isla are the same

Ayla is a great name, strong but still sweet IYKWIM.
Netra

I always pronounced it
EYE-lah
but Jean Auel says it is actually AY-lah same sound as 'hay' for horses.
Apparently it came from a race she once saw where the rowers were using that to time the rhythm of their strokes. From memory it may also be an old hebrew name meaning oak, or red oak or something.
Rylani

It's pronounced Ay la
Isla is I La
